"If one household in 10 bought Energy Star--rated heating and cooling equipment, the change in greenhouse-gas emissions would be equivalent to taking 1.5 million cars off the road." That's an amazing statistic! "Install an Energy Star--certified ceiling fan (50 percent more efficient than others) and comfortably keep your home four degrees warmer in the summer." Now that's one thing I could go for! Check out this article about ways to cut energy costs. http://www.cnn.com/2007/LIVING/homestyle/07/12/cut.energy.costs/index.html?iref=newssearch

Unfortunately I do not need to replace anything right now. I got energy star hot water heater last year when I replaced one. I do not know how a ceiling fan can be energy efficient, but I use mine as much as possible instead of AC. It is a certain help. I may have to get one if we fix up another bedroom, so I will look at that time.

We use our living room and bedroom ceiling fans 24/7! But they are quite old. Didn't really know about getting one that was more energy efficient before I read this article.

What we do with our fan, is put it on when it is very hot, & use it to circulate the cold air from the refrigerated air conditioner. This way we have the airconditioner running as low as possible. At night, I only use a fan, unless it is extreme.

Lets see, I have an energy star washer (front load low water) and dryer (gas), fridge & freezer. Now, I grant that they are over 2 yrs old now, but still, were top of the line when I got them. My ac (that replaced the one that came with the house) is now almost 15 yrs old, but it was top of the line energy wise when we got it. We've also got an programable thermostate. I'm doing the best I can here!

Way to go. Sounds like you were being energy efficient before it became the fashion! LOL

And I put out glass, cans & plastics 1 & 2 for the city to recycle. We take the soda cans out to the roomie's folks for her dad to sell.

I have heard that companies can get those stickers and just put them on and not really qualify as money savers. I am hoping that is not true however with the way the world is going it would not surprise me. Warmer in Summer? I think that cooler would be the thing for most of us. Will check out that link since I respond from email and after this response posts then I am on my way there. Thanks for sharing it. Not sure how it might impact this solar and wind power girl.

People can buy energy efficent hot water systems (we have solar), washing machines, dishwashers, heating & cooling. The problem is that many energy efficient electrical appliances cost more. Our government is going to give out a subsidy to people who buy a solar hot water system.

ummmm 4 degrees WARMER in the SUMMER?!?!? Now we know the heat has gotten to your brain, estherlou. lol Cooler in summer and warmer in winter, I believe you meant. As my appliances give out, I'm buying Energy Star ones to replace them. They cost more initially but save you a ton thruout their lifespan. I've tried to talk the manufactured home dealer into having a tankless water heater instead of the the reg. ones when we were customizing one for our new home but the company that makes them wouldn't do it. Now when this one wears out, my bro already knows he will be installing a tankless one for us. So nice to have a pipefitter in the family. He replaced all the pipes and boiler in our mom's house last year at a great savings since she bought everything he needed to do it on sale with her senior discount and all he wants in payment is a hearty meal. Can't beat that! He also did most of the work on his own manufactured home in WI when they bought one to put on his 80 acres up there. He just bought the shell and did most of the rest himself. Time for me to quit bantering cause now I'm going off topic. lol

they are a good idea, and i think most new appliances HAVE to be energy star. At least around here that's all i see in the stores!
