My son has a new red and white striped shirt. I advised him to wash it the first time with a load of towels so that if by chance it bled, that it would bleed on towels and not other articles of clothing. Which do you advise him to wash it with the 2nd washing and beyond...Bright colors, dark colors or whites (without bleach of course)

I was told if you add salt to the water, it will not bleed. It is best to wash it with similar colors or separately, and use the color fast bleach, not the kind that is for whites. If he checks the label, it will tell if it is colorfast or not. If it is color fast, he can wash it with anything, but if it is not color fast, he was to wash it separately or with something where getting a stain on it does not matter. Oh and tell him to wash in cold water.

I did tell him about the cold water, but I'd not heard the tip about the salt before. Maybe you should start a new discussion about the best laundry tips. That might be a really cool post that would get lots of discussions added!

I would say dark colors and most importantly it needs to be in COLD water. Cold water will keep the colors from bleeding.

Most of the time, yes that is true. I also suggested getting it out of the washing machine as soon as it finished, and not taking the chance of leaving it up against another garment.

My guess, and that is all it is, is that it should go with bright colors, with fabric safe bleach if the white stripes get to be dingy. Don't you hate those risky combinations?

yes, I do. I do not think that this one will fade, as he purchased it at Eddie Bauer. I don't know what they do to their fabrics, but they just don't fade or bleed like other brands do. I have a bright Orange shirt that I bought from there almost 5 years ago, and it's still as pretty as the day I bought it.

Did it fade on the towels? I dont wash anything with other colors on it with my whites. I only wash total whites together. I have had pick socks too many times when I was a kid. LOL colors with white always presents problems when it comes time to wash them. Good luck

No, it didn't fade on the towels. He had the good sense to wash it with my darker colored towels. They are old enough that they won't fade on the shirt. I am not sure the color would fade at all, but didn't want to take the chance. It all depends on the material and what it was dyed with.

Probably with brights or white, so long as he's sure it won't bleed more or nothing else will bleed. I made a red dress for the former roomie & that $%^&* bleed every time it was washed!

That's awful. I used to have a beautiful pink and white striped blouse. It was one of my favorite outfits as it had a bright pink pair of pants that went with it. One day, I had to run an errand that took longer than I thought, and it got left in the washing machine longer than I intended. The pink bled on the white and it never did look right again.
