A Job Worth Doing Is Worth Doing Well...

This is an old addage, which I think is a very true one. I can be very fussy when attempting to do something I think is worthwhile. My wedding cakes for example, have to be special. Other cakes, I don't worry so much about but as some of you may know, I do make cakes to order, and wedding cakes are my absolute favourite.
People often give me a sketchy idea of what they want, and tell me to finish it how I think, and as yet, I've had no complaints, as I do fuss over them somewhat.
I also make greetings cards, which I love to be different to any you can buy in the shops. I love working with dried flowers and pagan pics.
So do you have a job which you think is worth doing well, or a craft or hobby?

Mummymo, my dear, sweet friend. Never beat yourself up about your kids, because I know, as do many others, that you always do the very best you can for them. Niamh and Niall are examples of the way you bring them up and they are two of the best kids ever, so you're doing something right, aren't you? I'm thinking back now to the moment with the dress which Niamh didn't want you to wear to the school. Doesn't that just give you some idea of the way you're succeeding with their upbringing?
We all make little mistakes along the way, and if you sit down with them and explain when you think you haven't quite given your best, they will understand, and you can put it right if you feel you went a little off course. On the whole, my friend, you are a Mum to be proud of, and should be proud of the way your kids are turning out. Go figure!
Brightest Blessings, love and hugs. xx

I like decorating too, and I quite like designing rooms. I did my bathroom, which has the effect of a beach and the seaside. There is a big mirror over the basin, which is lit by three halogen lights, and the works for the halogen lights are housed in a box, shaped like a beach hut and painted blue and pine coloured stripes. lol. The bath is housed in blue cladding, and I put four brass hooks on the side, and bought a pair of paddle oars, which are seated, one above the other on the side of the bath. All the woodwork is sea blue washed, to a height of 36 inches around the walls, which is cladded, the top half of the walls is a sand yellow textured paint and the ceiling blue, with textured white clouds. How's that for matching everything! ha ha ha. Then, all around the shelf, I have lighthouse candles, a pelican, seagulls, rowing boats, beach houses, starfish and big and small fish. There are some shells as well, intermittently. The voile curtain is sea blue, and the outer curtain is sand yellow. I love the bathroom. :)
Yes, I find that cards are quite therapeutic and don't require too much physical energy. I like to do them too. Thank you for the compliment, my dear friend... Brightest Blessings. xxxx

Most of my jobs involve taking care of people, and yes, I believe they should always be done well. It sounds like you take great joy in the cakes you make, especially the wedding cakes. My daughter's cake was made by a friend who did it to Samantha's specs. and with an ornament another friend made for it. It gave us all great joy. It was a very plain and simple cake, but just right and perfect for my daughter. Weddings are wonderful times to be tied to our history, family, and tradition.

Sometimes, the bride prefers a simple cake. That one in the picture wasn't heavily decorated, as the most part of the tops of the first and second tiers were quite plain. However, the groom did want their initials piped on the side, in gold. lol.
Anyway, enough about my cakes. Sorry if I got a bit boring there. Thank you for your input and Brightest Blessings.

That is a cake to be proud of well done. Makind a cake to be square I would imagine is harder than a round one. To me the square cake seams to have more character to it and stands out more and obviously being square has to have more volume and ingredients I suppose and more to eat hmmm yum yum.
Back to the original title, yes it does matter to do a job well that needs doing and the finished item done well has more pride attached to ones feelings.
Having spent 15 years in the Army EVERYTHING had to be done well!

Lol... cakes are cakes, whatever the shape, Deeeky. I've made round ones, square ones, oblong ones with the corners cut off, bell-shaped ones, heart-shaped, hexagonal, club-shaped, flower shaped, numbers and even a cinderella castle! Yes, the volume of cake mix does differ and square cakes do use more mixture, but the degree of difficulty doesn't alter much, except with numbers, like 6, 8 and 9, where you have to marzipan and ice the inside of the hole. lolol.
You're still up for a birthday cake this year, providing I can find a way to get it to you in one piece, so be careful what you say!!! ha ha ha
Oh yes, bulling up those boots and webbing and everything. I remember it well! Spit and polish and all that. lol. Then, all the trouser creases had to be just so... the army is quite strict, but I think it's good practice.
Brightest Blessings, my dear friend, for a great day!

Thats a beautiful cake, Darkwing. You are very talented. Bad luck your not over here. I could of got you to make some cakes for when i open the cafe. hehe. I used to love doing lots of craft. But i dont get the time now. I loved doing pottery. I used to make things like little houses, wishing wells, dunnies, little plaques, etc. I always tried to get them just right. Its like i tell my kids, always try your best, and even if you dont get to win or as good a mark as you would of liked, as long as you try your best, is all that i ask.
Best wishes to you, Darkwing

Awwww, thank you Kay. It's not my best one, but it's the only one I have left on my comp since it went down, about a year ago. I have a pile of photos somewhere, to put it, and haven't found time yet. But, I guess I ought to, someday.
Oh wow, making pottery items is a real skillful craft, especially if smaller items. If you get to open your little restaurant or cafe, whichever, you could incorporate that, by making a stock of say, beehive shaped containers to put honey in, and sell it from your premises. I'm trying to make it like our West Country places. ha ha ha ha.
Brightest Blessings my friend... yes, we're agreed, if we do our best, we've succeeded!

I have thought of having some crafty things for sale, even if others might like to put there things in to display. I love looking at handmade things. Havent done any pottery for quite a while, but loved it when i did. I got so many different ideas that go through my head for the shop, hopefully they will all work out. But getting there.
cheers

Hi Darkwing! I agree with that, A job worth doing is worth doing well. I make handpainted greeting cards and we specialized in caricatures. I also make handmade and hanpainted souvenier items for all occassions...that keeps me busy and painting is very relaxing for me. When I make my items, I immersed myself completely. My customers are very satisfied. Guess I could say, "A Job well done". Have a nice day and take care!

Yes, painting, or almost anything that one likes to do I suppose, can be very relaxing. I envy you, being able to paint... I can sketch, but I'm not great at knowing where to shade and suchlike, when painting.
I think we're agreed then, whichever way we say it that a job worth doing is worth doing well. I think it gives you a great sense of achievement when customers are satisfied. Brightest Blessings.

I agree with you, I annoy some of my friends because when I start something I do the very best I can, some people just go as far as as OK, I go for the very best I can possibly do, and my friends really get annoyed with me, I don't think a lot of people have the inner pride that some others do, I wonder if they get any feeling of satifaction in what they do or does that not enter into things..I like the feeling that I have done the very best I can.

Yes, I think when we're pregnant our bodies condition to cope with children for long periods of time. When we get a bit older, they become quite tiring to keep up with. Still, we love 'em just the same, and do our best for them. I don't think you'd want to be without her now, my friend.
Brightest Blessings. xx

People call me a perfectionist and I won't deny it, but I'd rather be called a perfectionist than sloppy! I totally agree that if a job is worth doing at all, it should be done properly. I spend a lot of time on designing leaflets, covers etc. If I use the same one again later, I'll re-do a lot of it because there is always room for improvement.
I printed on every one of my children's school books:
Good, better, best.
Never let it rest
Until your good is better
And your better is best.
While I am perfectionist in most things, I must admit that quite often - when I am very busy - my house only gets a once-over and a promise to get back.

That's a good lesson for the kids, Cloud, and yes, I know you're a bit of a perfectionist... nay, a great deal, perfectionist! ha ha ha. There's nothing wrong with that. We all strive each day to better ourselves and grow spiritually so striving for excellence is a part of that.. no?
Brightest Blessings, my dear friend.

In other words you're a fussy perfectionist...LOL...don't worry, so am I ---I know my capabilities and I do like things to be well done and as perfect as possible to reflect my skills whether it's be my crafts, writing, anything--so I might fuss over something longer than I need to, just to make sure things come out all right--after all, it is a reflection of me...right?
OMG--that wedding cake is a work of art....I love to make cakes too, but I don't think I could have that kind of patience...I also make cards occassionally as well--instead of dried flowers and such, I usually do some kind of painting...or have even managed to make dreamcatchers and placed them on cards.

Not quite, Pye, I'm not a Virgo, I'm a month later! lolol The Balancer! :) Your "fussiness", for want of a better word, reflects in your craftwork, my friend.
I haven't made dreamcatcher cards as yet, but that would be a nice idea. If you made a proper dreamcatcher and attached it to the card in such a way that it could be detached and would double up as a gift... that would be a novel idea, for a friend, or young person.
In England, whereas Americans would "frost" their cakes, we coat a celebration cake with almond paste, and then with icing, then decorate it with flowers, animals, baby bibs and bottles... whatever, to finish it. Thus, it's easier to do, because you have a little more time than if you're frosting. It's good to leave the almond paste to harden a little for a day or two, before applying the icing.
I love making cakes anyway... that all started when my sister had six kids to give birthdays for and I was the family cake maker. lolol. I've been doing it ever since for every event imaginable. :)
Brightest Blessings.
