Blackberry and Apple Crumble... Yummy, I Can't Wait!

Somebody sent me a bagful of apples from their tree the other day, which I haven't used yet, apart from a few wedges around my pork chops. lol. Then, on Thursday, I had to walk up the street to the Village Hall to cast my vote as to whether I agreed a new one. On the way back, I decided that it was a nice evening, so I'd take a stroll around the rec. It wasn't difficult to notice the abundance of acorns, hazelnuts and yes... blackberries on the bushes and trees. So... I'm going out tomorrow, blackberry picking. I think I might go down the lane rather than the rec, so I don't fall in the ditch, whilst picking. lol. Then, I'm going to bring them home, wash them, peel some apples and stew them together, before making a crumble topping. The only problem is... no evaporated milk, but they should have some at the garage. As my diet has been going quite well, I will only have to have a thin layer of crumble on the top, and put sweetener in the fruit instead of sugar, but I'm quite looking forward to that. I love blackberry and apple crumble, and also, rhubarb crumble, but must have it in moderation.:) It would be criminal to dash the diet completely. Do you go picking blackberries at this time of year, and if so, what do you do with them? Do you just stew them, or make pies, crumbles, jam, jelly or what?

Awwwwwwwww, poor Gissi. Perhaps if I add some Patchouli oil, and the container leaks blackberries, apple and patchouli, he will have a purple moment. ha ha ha. I can imagine him rolling in that. I have a better idea... pick some blackberries the next time you go to the field, then when I come up next, we'll buy some apples and make a crumble. I think sending it in the post might just be a wee bit too risky, my friend. lolol. Brightest Blessings, love and hugs. xxx

Why you sulking? As it happens, it's chucking it down with rain today, so the blackberries will have to wait a bit. They should be even juicier after this! Love and hugs. xx

Yummy... the slurpy sounds delicious. A little bit of honey would be really good for you my friend. I don't like things to sweet as a rule, but I take honey occasionally for its goodness, especially when I have a cold or sore throat... honey and lemon is great. Brightest Blessings, love and hugs. xxx

We have a lot of blackberries around us, so we pick as many as we can get and freeze some of them. I bake them in crumbles and in blackberry/ blueberry bars. A neighbour has plums on their tree, and they have a lot, so we get some! I've been making blackberry - plum crumbles.

Oh my that sounds so good. I don't make anything but I do pick the berries for my mother in law. She makes fantastic blackberry cobbler. She also makes wonderful jellies. Making my mouth water just thinking about it.

Cobblers are very popular, methinks. I think I'll stick to my crumble and evaporated milk for the moment though, because it'll be my first this year! :) I like the jellies and jams a lot too. Brightest Blessings.

Just the mention of blackberries makes my mouth water, Darkwing. I have not had fresh ones for decades. It really brings back memories from my childhood. We always had them in the summertime. My aunt would make preserves and jam-but the blackberry cobblers were the best! I bought one last year at a popular restaurant here, but it was nothing like the ones I grew up eating, so I ended up giving it to my mother. Hope you enjoy yours.

I agree, the fresh ones taste so different. When they freeze them, they become watery and tasteless. We really can save a lot of money by making jams, preserves and home baked desserts and they are so much nicer, toboot. Brightest Blessings.

yummy,i love apples especially a nice apple from a tree.when i was youger where i lived we had a apple tree,and a peach tree.it was great.they taste so much better that way.we use to make a real easy and delicious dish.first you need to wash the apples,peel them,cut them into small pieces,put them in a clean baking dish,or you can use a clean tuna can,its small enough.sprinkle one tabelspoon of water over the apple,then mix 2 tabelspoons of wheat or white flour in a bowl with about a 1/4 teaspoon of cinimmon,1 tabel spoon of butter,2 tabel spoons of sugar,sprinkle the mixture on the apples,bake at 350 for 25 minutes,eat when warm.so many things you can do.i miss those trees.lol

That sounds a bit like apple crumble with cinammon, and cinammon goes great with apples, so to me, it sounds delicious. Any ideas you want to share, for plums. I've had some of those dropped in now? Thank you for sharing and Brightest Blessings. I might just try that.

where we used to go berry picking is all motorway now and if any were left they would be full of all the filth from there , my diet isn't going to well at the moment pal but I will be back to it , I so wish I lived closer to you my friend I could maybe come and have a cuppa and some crumble with you , xx
@Darkwing (21583)

You would be most welcome, Weemam. I was wondering... don't they have blackberries around the Lochs? I know you go to Loch Ness quite a bit... just a thought. Don't worry about the diet... when you're ready you'll know, and you'll make more of a success of it. I have my treats from time to time, especially after I've weighed and found I've lost nothing during the previous week! Brightest Blessings my friend. xxx

Oh I envy you so. The blackberries in Europe are so much bigger and more abundant. I have been picking them here where I live in Ontario, Canada but they are so much smaller and harder to find. Some of them are not even ripe. I have picked quite a few but they are very small. I boil them up with some water. Then I put them through a cheese cloth to squeeze out the seeds, then I boil this juice again with some sugar to make syrup. I bottle the syrup and use it over ice cream or pancakes. The colour is a rich ruby and the taste is so delicious.

Mmmmmmm, I like the sound of your syrup. I might give that one a try. I'm sure my grandkids will love it with ice cream. Brightest Blessings in thanking you for your input.

How sad, I do not have any place to go pick berries of any kind.;=( If I did I would chill them and pour some cream or condensed skim milk over them, possibly sweeten with honey or maple syrup. I would mix them up, all kinds of berries. I tend to buy berrie combinations already frozen, and I do put them into a cold dish, and put vanilla yogurt on them. The summer I lost weight very easily that was the breakfast I ate most days. Berries are very healthy, and apples are, as well. Please e mail me some crumble. LOL
@Darkwing (21583)

Mmmmmmm, yes, you could use them with yoghurt or creme fraiche between pancakes or waffles too... that sounds delicious for a breakfast meal. Brightest Blessings. x

Hi Darkwing! We use to have a blueberrie field in our backyard were once lived and would go out picking them and I would sell them. I also made pies and blueberry pancakes are the best.LOL We dont live there anymore. We just recently moved. I do miss the blueberry fields. Good luck with your blackberry picking. Please dont fall into any ditches.LOL Im glad to hear you still doing good on your diet. And your recipe sounds delicous too.

We don't have blueberries here, unfortunately. You make them sound delicious. Nice in pancakes with ice cream, I'll bet. I love American Pancakes. I'm unable to go today as it's raining very hard and windy, but they'll still be there tomorrow, or whenever, as long as the birds keep their beaks out! lol. Brightest Blessings.

Yes its great to pick them when there nice and fresh in the season.If the is one food I like is fruit mmm. Apple pie and and rhubarb crumble are just a couple of my favourites. I am not up to fancy stuff so give me the basics anyday. You ARE having a nice day from Deeeky.

Yes, I like home grown fruit, or edible fruits that grow in the wild. I like my apple pie with a few sultanas and cinnamon in it. Yummmmeeeee! Fruit seems to be abundant this year, as I've had loads given me from raspberries to rhubarb, and there's certainly an abundance of blackberries. Crumble is my favourite, but I also like Apple Charlotte and Queen Pudding. I experiment sometimes too... I tend to get fed up with the same old thing all the time. I just might get enough to make some blackberry and apple jam, or blackberry jelly, but not today! The weather is a bit rough... very windy and very, very wet, so I'll have to dream for a day or two. lol Brightest Blessings. x

Wow black berries in August! I did not know that they have them that late in the year. I always go dewberry picking in May and by June they are taken or shriveled up. Hope you have fun and don't get the stickers in you!

I suppose the weather here has something to do with the lateness of blackberries. They're an Autumn fruit in Britain, and I love them. Brightest Blessings.

You know what? The first thing that caught my attention in this discussion is the few wedges around the pork chops.... This pork chops itself is way more interesting and appetising than berry picking. lol. Isn't it nice to be able to cook and do your own baking? For me, I would just buy the ready-made crumbles from confectionary shops.

The ready made aren't so nice though, Why. Home made rules for me... especially when you're given most of the ingredients. Home-grown produce is so much better in taste and nutrition. I'll give you another idea for Pork Chops... still cut one apple into wedges and place on and around your pork chops, but add half a pint of cider to them, in a baking dish and bake them for about 45-50 minutes, then make gravy from your liquid. It makes a great combination. :) Brightest Blessings.
