Head Lice - What do you do?

My children are 10 in November, 8 at Christmas & 4 and a half. They have been in child care (of one form or another) for about 9 years. For most of that time, they did not get head lice. Then they began attending one particular centre, and the youngest got them. We cut her hair, used special shampoos, electric combs, and all sorts of other things. What are some of the things you have tried (or know of) to get rid of them.

We don't have the problem anymore, but I was just wondering what others do to get rid of them. The funny thing is that they went to the youngest, but did not go to the other two as well most of the time.

Have you just treated her? Or everyone in your family? Because to get rid of them you must, treat everone who cam in contact with her, tell all her friends parents etc. Also wash all bedding, clothes, and hair pieces as well. like scrutches elastics, hats, hair bands or just throw them out and get new ones... It is a very long process and they are very hard to get rid of

Strange as this may sound, we use mayonaise. My daughter had a severe reaction to the shampoos so the nurse at the doctor's office told me to try the mayo. It not only suffocates the live lice, but the oils in the mayo help to remove the eggs. As for the clothes/stuffed animals either wash them all or run them in the dryer on high heat for 20 minutes and that will kill the lice/eggs.

my youngest daughter got them real bad. This is what we had to do: clean all bedding, remove all stuffed animals ect for 2 weeks(bag it up), get special shampoo from doctor, check hair often. The combs suck. I ended up pulling out the nits with my fingers. She was completely covered. Hours on end. She ended up getting them back when she went back for visits with her real mom. I refused to send her until she cleaned her house, and I checked her before I would let her in my house. I couldnt get rid of them with reg. shampoo for lice. It wouldnt kill them.I could smoosh them and they would keep moving.

My daughter had them so bad once that we could not get rid of them no matter what, so I bought some hair dye, close to her natural color, and I dyed her hair. It killed all the lice! If you dye it, you still want to get the nits out, even though I think the dye kills the nits, the school won't let them back until they are gone. The dying can make it easier to spot the nits, however! Some white vinegar can make the nits slide off the hair easier too. Good Luck!

pick up a bottle each of rosemary, tea tree and lavender oil. Take 20 drops of each of these oils and put them in measuring cup. Now, add vinegar and double the amount of olive oil so you have half a cup of the mixture. Apply this to your child's scalp and leave on overnight. Wash off the next morning

you have to come the knits out strand by strand for about 14 days. eventually you will get all the live ones and they can produce more nits. eventually you will be clean. .....but keep checking weekly or monthly

Just before bedtime, cover your childrens' hair and scalp with mayonnaise and then put a shower cap on their head. Let them sleep with the mayo and shower cap all night and shampoo their hair in the morning. It sounds weird, but it works - the mayo smothers the lice and kills it. Then you'll want to wash all their sheets, towels, clothing, etc. in hot, hot, hot water.

Get a lice comb and dip it in vinegar and shake it off everytime you brush through her hair. My mom used to do that when I'd get lice when I was younger. Apparently it makes it easier to pull the lice off the strands of hair. But if you've never done it before, it can be quite a task. It could take anywhere from 1-2 hours. Probably 2 hours if you want to make sure you get all of it out. And I want to point out that a lot of people think kids who get lice have dirty hair, but it's actually quite the opposite. Lice only latch onto clean heads/hair.

Everynow and then goop up mayonaise in the hair. The nits can't stick to the hair then. Let it sit for awhile and then wash hair real good.

OMG! I remember my children getting those in school. It was horrible. They weren't they hard to get rid of -- just had to buy some special shampoo (Rid maybe? I don't remember what it was called -- seems like there was a prescription for it back then). all of the sheets had to be disinfected and washed in really hot water and the furniture and everything had to be sprayed with stuff that would kill them.

Yes I have delt with lice several time, It is not from being dirty, I wash my hair everyday and still got it. My kids bring it home from school. And animal lice and human lice are not the same. Thare are lots of kinds of lice. You should look it up on the web for true info. You just have to be consistant and make sure you follow up with the lice treatment you are useing.Hope this helps.
