Is this the women's nature? Or this hobby comes from history and society?

this is a theory based on a large percentage of women, but its by no means universal. Many women love shopping for items such as clothes, shoes and make up because, (helped on by images in celebrity magazines and the like) they can cling to the hope that these adornments will magically enchance their status and attractiveness- if we can locate that perfect pair of shoes or lipgloss or whatever then somehow our lives will magically transform- men will fall at our feet, our boss will respect us more, our enemies will be green with envy. The media has long perpetuated the belief that a woman's sucess is intimately tied up with the way she looks, and increasingly- how much she spends on the way she looks- hence we march down our high street in full Gucci armour waving our credit cards like weapons, certain that the next pair of designer shoes we by will transform us into a Goddess (which sometimes, temporarily, I think they do..). By contrast, most of us hate shopping for things like food and electrical goods which do little to enchance the way we appear to the outside world. In a nutshell, it's vanity, sweetie...

But I find that sometimes when they just don't want something or don't need to buy something, they will also go shopping and buy a lot of things......

My Mother used to buy stuff when she didn't need it as an anti-depressant. She was always happy when she was shopping. The walking, I think was part of it. Seeing neat colors, anticipation of bringing things home and seeing people's reactions.

I know that not all the women love shopping. But I think most women love shopping. I think for most men, shopping is just a kind of activity to get something they need. But for most women, shopping is a kind of hobby. They just enjoy a lot with shopping...

Actually women at least in india are entrusted with most of the shopping right from daily consumables to general use items. They are doing all the purchase for the children, elders. So they have to move more often to the market to fulfil their responsibilites and it seems that they love shopping.

To me, I think it's women's nature since they have to take care of the house and children. They have to shop for everything to save money, and they have to find good bargains. Along the line of duties, they developed the love for the "fun shopping" where they could occassionally meet with friends. Sometimes, I like to shop, but sometimes I don't. I especially dislike shopping for household stuffs :((

I think it is women's nature :P I don't like to walk to much but spending 5 hours shopping is nothing to me. It must have been written in our genes in a process of an evolution xD More seriously, it's probably result of our status in the past. Women were always rised to be their husbands' pride. They had to look good and for many years it was suposed to be their only concern (along with rising children). So even now we are concerned about our appearance.

I think perhaps women like to dress up themselves and do something for their families. And buying gifts for them is the good idea. They always think they are wise to buy something in the good way. And women won't feel tired of it, it is quite different than men.

Hello Izjilbb, I am one of those women who love to spend time shopping. The longest I can stay away from the shopping mall is maybe...1-2 days. I always feel life is incomplete if I don't do my window shopping and check the latest trends and if it is within my budget, I will definitely spend and splurge sometimes *laughs* But now, I think I am more 'considerate' whenever I go shopping compare to the previous time. I was a terrible shopaholic before that I couldn't stand to drive out from the shopping mall car park without anything in my both hands.

Men hunted. Women gathered. Woman gathered stuff to make clothes and stuff to make meals (food). By several thousands of years of gathering, it is probably also part of our nature.

I am a woman and I hate shopping! Especially for clothes or shoes. My oldest daughter says I shop like a man...or the hunter theory. Shirt! Buy! lol I do love browsing antique stores and book shops. Otherwise, shopping is just not my thing.
