How did your garden grow?

Did you grow vegetables this year? Mine was pretty good, all things considered. I have a very small space, but grew enough green beans for a year (I froze them), quite a few acorn squash and still getting tomatoes - enough to make some sauce for the freezer and to eat plenty fresh. I had other things, too, but those produced the best. Did you get a good crop from yours?

...This year, I really missed having a garden. Because I filed for a divorce, it was the last thing I had time for. I had my perenials to worry about getting from the house before I moved. Now, I have to get them into the ground. ...Next year doesn't look good for a garden either. I rented this house for a year, as the new man in my life and I plan on buying a home together. The new home shall have lots of room for a veggie and flower gardens. He wants a couple acres and I want 5 to 10! ...A tractor will be needed to do the kind of veggie garden I want. I miss having about 30 roma tomato plants, a large row of peas, green beans, italian green beans, eggplants, zuccini, yellow squash, asparagus, asparagus beans, okra, melons, sweet corn, fava beans, cucumbers, japanese cucumbers, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli and beans for drying, like kidney, pinto, pink, black turtle and red beans. ...Last year I canned tomato sauce. I did three bushes and still had several jars left. I didn't get any out of the old house before ex changed the locks either. Fresh veggies from the garden taste so much better. Can't wait to be growing my own again. ...Great thread, thanks for asking. Peace be with you. =(^;^)= Della

Oh, you're talking about REAL gardening! LOL! That's a lot of food for just two people. Do you have kids? I used to do a 50 X 50 ft garden and froze, canned and dehydrated nearly all the vegetables we ate for a year from that. A half dozen tomato plants did us very well... a 6 X 6 plot for corn, then summer and winter squash, cucumbers, melons and pumpkins along the fenceline. I grew lots of green beans and let some mature and dry for winter eating, beets and a few peas, some lettuce, onions, radishes - that sort of thing. In the past, I grew salsify, okra, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots and potatoes, but none of those did well enough to make it worthwhile there. Here I have only a back yard so don't do nearly as much.

...My children like veggies best right from garden. They do not like canned or frozen. They will eat frozen, just not their favorite. ...A lot of what we grew and didn't eat went to food harvesters for homeless shelters in our area. First weekend in October is our CROP WALK and I make soup for all the people who walk. Whatever veggie I can get out of garden helps make the soup. ...Gardening is theraputic. Keep planting good seeds. Peace be with you. =(^;^)= Della

The gardens of childhood were tended by both grandma and momma with loving care and attention to detail. The veggies in one corner, the flowers in another, while the herbs and cooking supplements occupied the other two corners. Mom took great care and taught us about sustaining beauty and nutritional value, nothing was sprayed with synthetic protective material, hazardous to one's health. A prose piece I wrote on how the garden was tended appears here . . . http://www.gomestic.com/Gardening/The-Family-Garden.8727 sharing the light, Erica H. or enlightenedpsych2

My garden has been tremendous. My sunflower (which was actually planted by squirrels, but I liked it so I left it) came close to 10ft. tall. My tomatoes are about 7 ft. tall and I got a lot from them, still getting a lot. I've been freezing them as we go along. My roses haven't stopped blooming, even though the June blooms were the best. We are the only house I've seen in my city that has roses! Yeah, we've had a good season!

I have a small garden wherein i have grown some vegetables and fruits like ladyfindger, tomato, mango and lemons. I also grow some seasonal plants which give good results. The purpose is more related to getting food free from pesticides as i use only natural manures for my plants. This effort of mine is supported by my family too who too are of the opinion that home grow things are the best.

I did not grow vegetables. I wanted to, but did not get around to it. I plant some flowers, and they did really well considering the drought. I am looking forward to Fall so I can start planting perennials.

I SO wish I could have a garden. I live in a top floor condo. You know now you got me thinking I could do containers. We have like a balconey type thing I could put them on.
