Revisiting Old Friends

I was taking a mental vacation this afternoon (you know, those spaced out moments where your brain trips around without a map) and without intending to, revisited Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. The scene with Dobby by the seaside cottage, to be exact. Which then sent my mind along the rest of the story, rereading it in my mind (and jonesing to reread it in real life...)
I love revisiting characters. Not just in my own trippy little brain, but in stories. Both in series type stories like Harry Potter, where we held on by our fingernails waiting for our hero’s next year at Hogwarts, and in sequel type stories such as John Jakes, North and South. I truly adore a good series and by far they are my favorite read. Anne Rice and her Vampire Chronicles has kept me entertained for many years, along with Stephen kings Gun Slinger. These characters become part of my life, I think about their worlds as though they were my own. I breath the air they breath, I taste the food they eat and I miss them when the book is over and its binding closed for yet another day.
How about you? What are some characters that live on for you long after you finish a book? You know the kind that just pops their faces in your brain and waves Hi at you?

Oh that movie is one of the biggest disappointments ever to be called a movie based on the book. Argg, I could not believe that one. With Flowers it really was not that Good triumphed over evil, those kids were seriously messed up their entire lives. The sadness was unbearable at times. The fact is that Cathy was able to reconcile with her past. Thats the only real lesson there. But it was a damn good read. Heaven was also one of my favorites.

You're very right Angel, I read through 26 books in the VC Andrews series and the newer books by the new author were repetative....there are more, geared towards teens, smaller books, same story line in each new series, different names and places, other than that, they're repetative, too....
I always thought "I could've finished up those books a he!! of alot better...."
For some reason, though..the Flowers in the Attic always stick in my mind, maybe because of the triumph of good beating evil? I'm not sure....
and the "Heaven" series sticks in my mind....
I always thought they would make excellent movies....
too bad the flowers in the attic movie that was made in the 80's wasn't made by the people that have done harry potter...hmmm......that would be great, doncha think?!

I plan to re-read all the Harry Potter books soon..they are the kind of books, you just want to re-read over and over again--it's like just for awhile, one can pretend that the stories go on and on...and don't ever end....and yes I'm an Anne Rice fan too, as you know :) and oh! You love the North and South series...I have a novel idea on the continual back burner of my own series of books like that, but in my case I would be doing a fictional story based on my actual family tree...as to when to write it...yeesh..
Another great author with characters that stay in one's mind is of course non other that JRR Tolkien's Lord of the Rings....now those characters are ones to remember--in fact, just the other night, after a L_O_N_G absence, I started watching the Lord of The rings movies...the extended versions at that

This was an interesting discussion, and boy did it make my mind flood with characters. Yes, I do the same sometimes, almost for no reason I start remember things and people that I have read about. I read The Pilot's wife about a year ago, and she and the detective will show up from time to time. I see the soldiers from The Red Badge of Courage, Timothy and Phillip from The Cay (and I haven't read those books since high school, over 22 years ago). It's surprising what comes to our minds sometimes.

You know I believe that The Pilot's Wife was the first discussion I ever had with you. I bought it and dang if I still have not gotten around to reading it. Stephen King came out with a couple this year and of course the Potter book. But I really got terribly busy over the last part of the summer that I didn't even have time to be online other then work. I will get to it now that fall is setting in and winter on the way. Your so right how a favorite character will just pop in your head and you get hungry to re-read.

There are many characters that have lived on for me for years. =P
One of the best examples I can think of is going to be one a lot of people don't know, unfortunately. Donald Shimoda, from Richard Bach's Illusions: Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah. It's funny because I'll not have thought about the book for a while and then all of a sudden something he said will be in my head, and I'll have to go read it. =P
The Vampire Chronicles was another one that held my attention for a long time, there are just so many great characters there! And Harry Potter is one of my more recent favorites, from the past few years.
Actually, another one that really got me was "The Dark is Rising" series by Susan Cooper. It's kind of aimed at kids, but I don't think I read it until I was a teenager. (I only read adult books as a little kid, because I thought anything else was above me. Little snot.) Anyway, there are a lot of characters there that I really liked. That new movie coming out "The Seeker" or whatever is based on this series, though I'm kind of wary of it because it looks way different so far.
Another kid/young adult author that has a lot of characters that still really get me is Tamora Pierce. She has tons of characters that are awesome. I think I like Numair from her Immortals series best. =P

I have been a fan of the horror genre for so long that when the first Harry Potter book came out I really did not think I would enjoy it. In fact it was not really until the third book was out that a friend of ours who is a fanatic, bought my son for Christmas a nice hardbound boxed set of the three. He was still rather young and I started to read the first one aloud to him. OH my gosh 4 chapters in and I was caught hook line and sinker. We have read the entire series together sometimes reading aloud to each other. He would read and then when he was out playing or asleep, it would be my turn. I think part of the over all enjoyment of the series for me has been the time my son and I have spent together reading and discussing our favorite scenes in the books. We have agonized together over the release of the next book LOL.
Outside of Anne rice who I adore the other authors you mention I am not familiar with. I enjoy just about every type of book however other then those stupid silly Harlequin romance novels.I read non fiction as well as historical period epics.

Richard Bach is pretty obscure, so I wasn't really figuring anyone would get that one. There a couple other people who have a couple of his books under their interests, but that's about it. The book I mentioned is pretty heavy on "general spiritual truth" in fictional form... so of course that's something I would get into.
The other authors I mentioned like I said were kid/young adult type authors. I got really big into those when I was an adult... just because I never read kid's stuff when I was a kid. I'm weird like that, there are a lot of things I do that are childish because I didn't do them as a kid.

Lecanis the one series I loved as a kid and still enjoy reading (I can not wait to share them with my grand daughter) is the Nancy Drew mysteries. I am not sure if you ever met her but I have a good friend here in mylot her name is Jersey girl, she once made the comment that the nancy drew movies that came out showed her as a wimp weak school girl, but the fact is when you read the books you find her a very strong female character. One that you would want your young girls reading.

Twoey I hoard books myself. I become awfully attached to a good book, in fact if I have a choice of buying a book in hardback that I want or a pair of jeans or other article of clothing 9 times out of 10 I will choose the book.

Oh how I do love Anne Rice. The Vampre Chronicles were a good read, but my favorite was The Mayfair Witch series started off by The Witching Hour, and included Lasher and Taltos. I fell in love with the Mayfair Witches and their stories. I left a link in case you are not familiar with the series.

On a not-so-dark note, I also find myself eagerly awaiting the next volume of the Alphabet Series by Sue Grafton. It is a female detective series with the same main charater throughout the series. Good thing is, you can read K not having read A-J and still get it. They are very easy to read and I find myself having flown through the entire book within 2 days. Eagerly awaiting December 4th.... yet another link if you want to check it out. I highly recommend her series.

And finally.. I can read and re-read The Chronicles of Narnia.. all 7 books. I absolutely adore them, and when my sons were dying to see the movie, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, I made them both read the book first. You create your own images that way. If you see the movie first, you are destined to have the film makers idea of the book in your head instead of your own. And here comes yet another link..lol.

My pleasure :) I have thought abot picking up one of her newer ones, but a friend told me they were not quite up to Anne's normal writing. Maybe I will too just to see for myself.
