There are many reasons why we have backache. One factor is due to overexertion or overfatigue. Secondly, lack of calcium in our body. Calcium is very important as this will make our bones strong.
I encourage you to drink milk and expose yourself to sunlight; morning sunlight as much as possible.
For remedy, stretching, walking, and jogging exercises are applicable if having back pain problem. Avoid weight lifting and strenuous exercises. Never ever try to do abdominal crunch exercise, as this will make your pain worse.
Practice yourself of eating foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, which include green leafy vegetables and fruits. You can eat meat at least twice a month.
Take a rest as much as possible and sleep for at least eight hours a day. Try to avoid stressful activities.
Heat application such as taking a bath in warm pool water could also help.
Have a nice day and God speed!

Backache are common among middle aged adult. I for one at 38 has backache problem. I would do massage treatment sometime on a weekly basis just to ease the pain, and it did came to a point that is very costly.
Then I tried Birkman Yoga, i think at 40 your mom can still do it. I enrolled at the yoga studio for a month and then i did some of the exercise at home especially the strechings that i can do, and it did ease the pain of my back.
There are books about the Birkman Yoga sold in the internet if you cant find their studio around your area. The book has a very good detailed step by step instruction, though the actual session really teaches you how to do it properly.

I never got any official exercises, but yoga helps my back pain. I have a curved spine due to scoliosis so my back pain is horrible.

If your mother has no back injury, she can the Sun Salutation exercise of yoga. It available in the net. Its a series of 12 postures combined with inhale/exhale process. Your mother should also drink a lot of calcium and try to maintain good posture at all times.
