I have a question for those you that practice Hinduism, I will try to make it as uncomplicated as I can..lol My 4 year old daughter is half white, half indian. Sometimes, my husband takes her to the Temple and the other day when they were there, she pointed at a picture of Ganesh and sort of loudly said, "Look Dad! an elephant!" My husband wasnt angry, but was trying to shush her because he was afraid that someone might be offended by her saying this. My question is this: If you were in a temple and heard a little kid say something like that, would you be offended?? I mean, I know that in Hinduism, Ganesh is a God, but to a 4 year old child, she is simply explaining what she sees.

Are you sure he was scared that somebody might be offended? Maybe he shushed her because he didn't want her to shout. But, I think it's just a gesture. Even when I was a kid, when I went to the temple, I said certain funny things about deities I didn't know, and the priest just laughed at me. And my parents also laughed at my innocence. But, I don't think it's a serious issue at all. :) That's innocent and cute.

Yes, Im sure that was the reason. Its not the first time he has said it, and hes told me that he doesnt want anyone to be offended.

Then I'm sure it's a needless reaction.

Hi , Nobody would felt offended by a small kid uttering such a sentence . However ; such a thing said by a much older person would definitely lead to protest by other people in a Temple . Regards

haha no we dont find it offensive.God ganesh wasnt like that always. He was killed by his own father because of misunderstanding and then when he came to reality,he used his power and made him alive once again. He has killed and throw away Ganesh's head so he needed another. He ordered his servant to bring head and when they didnt get his original head they killed elephant in jungle and brought elephant head.Lord shiva made him alive once again with this new elephant head.So he has elephant head. Elephant animal itself is consider very much intelligent and powerful.People in India respect it and it has its place below sacred cow.So no its not offensive.
