Why do I feel compelled to bleach my counter tops?

Today I was busily cleaning my kitchen, when I noticed that my counter tops looked extremely dingy. Sure I clean them everyday. But, they're made from some type of material that absorbs stains. And, simply wiping the counters don't make them look clean. If you walked into my kitchen on any given Sunday, you'd swear that I never clean my counter tops, even though, that's not the truth. And, nothing bothers me like a messy looking kitchen. So, I started bleaching my counter tops and ended up smelling up the entire house with the Clorox. My spouse was none too pleased. But, he's definitely happier with my pristine white (freshly bleached) counter tops. Everything looks much cleaner now. I guess bleaching the counter tops is also better for destroying germs. I've had food poisoning before, resulting from improperly handled chicken and I'm not looking to repeat that again. Bleach kills germs. So, maybe a little cleaning compulsion is a good thing. What do you think? Do you think it's better to bleach your counter tops to keep them sanitary? How do you keep your counter tops looking new?

Morning again beauty queen. My wife and I use a Chinese brand called "Mr. Muscle" to do the counter top cleaning job. Mr. Muscle is very helpful in making the top as new as it used to within just a few minutes. We happened to find this when we were shopping in the supermarket one evening. It gets the dirt and oily top so easily and fast. We love to use Mr. Muscle.

It seems like almost all the kitchen all purpose cleaners have bleach in them nowadays, and I always manage to run up against my counters while they have one of those cleaners on them.I have ruined lots of clothes with this. I have heard that it is just as effective to clean and kill germs with peroxide, and it is less smelly. It is like the oxyclean cleaners. You might try that, because it is not really healthy to breathe those fumes from the bleach. I know you like the feeling of accomplishment seeing them white, and stain free. It is a good feeling. It is also a good thing to avoid food poisoning.

I read that as bleach my computer. Took me a while to relaise what you were talking about. I think it's a great idea. I'm always wiping down our kitchen benches and I've bleached them every now and then to b=give them a nice new feel.

Absolutely it's a good idea....provided the counter tops are a bleachable surface. I liked getting the scented bleach just for this purpose. It still smells like bleach but quite as bad.

I love the clean look of a bleached counter top. - gallon of bleach
I go through that phase very often. I have to bleach everything I can especially countertops. Sometimes I fill my tiny bathroom basin with bleach and water and just let it sit because I love the way it ends up looking!

I've found that using Comet w/ bleach is very effective at removing stains. And it smells far better than bleach. I sprinkle a little bit onto the wet counter top, swirl it thoroughly and let it set for 10 - 15 minutes while I do other cleaning (sweeping, washing dishes, etc.). For quick clean-ups, I use Chlorox Clean-up w/ Bleach. It too smells better than regular bleach and cleans very well. Hope this helps.
