How many here think money is the root of all Evil?

I believe very much that money is not the root of all evil, but I do believe that the love of money is the root of all evil. Just think about what I am saying here. Money is not evil by itself and the evidence is clear that it can easily destroy people's lives when they never have to want for anything. Just think about those people that win the lottery and end up gambling all their money away trying to make more and more of it. This is just an example that the love of money is very much the root of all evil. How many people appreciate the value of a dollar right now? I bet everyone on this website appreciates the value of the dollar. Now think about the world that is filled with celebrities from senders to popular actors and actresses. These people are making millions of dollars every week and spending millions of dollars on things that they can obtain with a snap of a finger just because of all the money they have. Don't get me wrong, these people definitely work hard to get where they are today, but I will never be convinced that a person needs more than $1 million to make a difference as well as those lives suffering around the world today. So tell me exactly what you think money is to you.

No, I don't actually. Don't get me wrong, I don't think being overly fond of money is a positive thing, but if we're talking roots, then you have to dig deeper. You bring up the example of the person who wins the lottery and gambles the money away trying to get more. So we dig to the root .. why do they do that? Fear of poverty would be the first one that comes to mind. Lack of self control. Lack of priorities or an inability to recognize good fortune ... there are a thousand reasons. Money is just the conduit to the behavior, not to blame in itself. Personally, I rank technology as a much higher evil than the love of money. I think our leaps and bounds of progress in technology are going to be the instrument that destroys the human race, inevitably. The world has become so rushed and hurried, and so digital, that we rely on technology for the simplest of things, and I don't like what I see going on around me because of it. Bottom line, no .. I don't think money, or even the desire for it, is the root of all evil. I think the ambition to change the world through digital means is much, much worse.

I definitely respect your input and understand where you are coming from thinking that technology is the root of all evil. Now let's dig deeper into the subject as you have. Without money we would not have the digital technology so therefore money being the source of creating technology would stem from the rush of technology itself. We could also argue that technology moving so fast is saving lives as well. What am I talking about? I am talking about medical research into stem cell treatments require the necessary technology that is needed to analyze and watch the progress. You take away that technology than you are prolonging the inevitable which is the hope of many people waiting for cures for cancer, muscular dystrophy, Lou Gehrig's disease, heart disease, and many more that are dependent on the digital world. Just remember that there are always two sides to a coin. This of course is based on digging deeper the core of what is the root of all evil.

what a very good post, I personally agree that money is not the root of all evil, love of money and lack of money is the root of all evil, if you dont have money, how can you eat? if you dont have money, how can you live? its how the person handles the money, many people with lots of money, help the poor people, crimes around the world is done because of lack of money.

To make it more easier, money is not the root but our desires. It is us humans who love the money that's what making things worse since money cannot talk, we can easily put the blame on it. It is in our hearts, what emotions or understanding controls us. If we let this eveil thoughts lord over us, then expect unnecessary things to happen. We should realize this by now, from the past mistakes we have encountered and experienced.

I understand where you are coming from. Learning from our mistakes is part of life itself. I never ever had much money and I had to work hard for every cent on an hourly basis. I have dreams of starting my own business locally where I reside and help the community with my profits. Maybe even the world on a larger scale if my business grew larger internationally, The more I think about it the stronger it makes me inside. I think I finally realize myself what needs to be done if I'm going to make my dreams a reality. I am going to do everything in my power to show the world what a dollar can do to change people's lives forever.

Money in itself makes life good and meaningful-the lack of money could perhaps, be the greater source evil, because a poor man is treacherous, ignorant, superstitous and envious. However, looking at the discussion from the other side of the coin, I still think just like anything that is misused, money once misused, could be a self affliction in itself-when the want for money to make more and more money enters your head, then you become a money worshiper and that is were the evil money can be so consuming with very destructive psychological consequences. I know of very miserable super rich men who cant even eat well because they dont believe in consumption any more-herein lies the evil and perhaps the danger of money. When you get to this level in the pursuit of money, then a poor begger is perhaps happier than you are!

The bible does say the love of money is the root of all evil, not having money. If you love money more than God then yes your wrong. God wants us to proper in wealth. The bible also teaches that, most people where raised that if you live for God to humble yourself you have to be poor. That is not what the bible teaches. But we are not to put our wealth nefore God.

I thought for sure someone would bring this up because it is exactly sure what the Bible says about the love of money. With that said, whether or not he comes from the Bible, it actually makes sense in the real world today. I mean just look at the stock market and how people react when things go bad there. Everybody freaks out and it's all to do with money right? The bottom line is that money can be used for good purposes just as it can be used for evil purposes. What do you think would happen if everyone was given the same amount of money to live on for the rest of their lives? In my honest opinion, you would have those still wanting more just so that they could feel like they are better than anyone else. I believe strongly that money will be the distraction of the world because there is just too much war and violence going on and for what? Money and power.

I'm not going to cite the Bible or anything, but I learned an important lesson. I used to be addicted to poker until it became a gambling habit. I was an okay poker player, but nowhere near good enough to go pro. But for some reason I kept thinking I was. I lost $1500 over the past year and decided to call it quits. Since then, I have not looked back because thinking about the $1500 I squandered away hurts too much. Now I realize that the most important thing is knowing who you are, what you value (besides money), and believing in yourself. If you don't believe in yourself, all the money in the world can't save you.

I agree with your final statement. However, as much as I believe the love of money is the root of all evil, it really can be used for good as well, but that would mean the world would have to come together as one and help each other out. The problem is that today the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. I personally wish that the wealthy would use the money that they are not using to save the world from itself because there would be so much more peace and harmony in the world if that ever happened, but the reality of the world we live in today pretty much speaks for itself and that is you can bring a horse to water but you can't make him drink it. I am glad that you have faced your demons and have taught yourself you value most in life and if everyone would believe in themselves then I am certain the world would be a better place.

I dont think so man !!! Basically money is one of the most important needs in the human life!! if u want to buy any thing (except the internal Happiness !!)u need money !! the home-owner will not give the home in rent seeing ur face or a shop-keeper will not give things to you seeing your internal beuty !! so to some extent money is a much needed option!!!

I agree that money is not evil by itself. I believe it's the attitude towards money that can lead to either evil or good things. Some people work hard and work smart in order to make lots of money. And once they have accumulated lots of money, they share it. Examples would be Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. On the other hand, there are people who would step on others, commit illegal and immoral acts, just to make more and more money. And for what? To buy expensive stuff for showing off to their friends. Now that's a pathetic way to live.

if Avarice (the love of money) is not the root of all evil, well then it is pretty close to the root. if not avarice which includes greed, usury and so many other crimes of the soul - then I would have to say pride. the pride of the devil "I will not serve" may include avarice under it - as the love of money makes money out to be a god.
