Remembrance Day - Now it's personal.

In honor of those in service - The yellow ribbon has become a symbol of our awaiting the return of our loved ones from service to the country. I can still recall word for word and note for note the song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon 'Round the Old Oak Tree" about a soldier returning from service not knowing how his loved ones would receive him, the song which has made the display of yellow ribbons a tradition.

Today, November 11, in North America, we are celebrating the holiday of Remembrance Day or Veterans Day. I really feel that Remembrance Day is more fitting now as there are so many soldiers and civil servants in active duty because of the wars in which we are involved. Before I continue, I want to publicly say THANK YOU to all those who have given of themselves, sometimes even unto death, to protect their friends and families and countries. I have always felt moved by this holiday, moreso since moving to Canada, as the areas of the US where I lived didn't seem to make a big deal about it. Although I have always considered myself a "democrat", a conscientious objector, and a pacifist, I certainly realize that war is going to happen and keep on happening under the control of human beings. Peace on Earth is temporary at best and true Peace is only a state in Divine existence. I realize the sacrifice and the hard work that is needed to keep humankind alive, at peace or at war. I am learning that, sadly, the best offense is sometimes a good defense and sometimes a movement is needed that is more aggressive than just defense. This year, as we observed our moment of silence for the Eleventh Hour, on the Eleventh Day, of the Eleventh Month, I stood beside my sixteen year old son and my mind and heart were moved as never before over the meaning of this day. Next summer, both my 16 year old and his 15 year old brother are voluntarily entering the Guard division in which they will receive basic Army training and begin their time of service with the Canadian Military. This has so changed the way that I look at the meaning of Remembrance Day. On Remembrance Day we honor the veterans of all wars, those who lost their lives in service, and those who are presently active in the various armed services of their country. Now I am the mother of two who will become part of this group. Even with the pre-existing appreciation of the sacrifice, dedication, hard work, and personal loss, I realize today that I feel different about this day than I ever have before. My own children, whom I love beyond words, are voluntarily becoming involved in service to others, for the defense of country, friends, and family...including myself. This moves me in such a deep way I can't even begin to describe how it feels. It is not sadness, nor is it joy. It is simply a depth of appreciation beyond any words I can find.

Thank you kbkbooks and thanks to all our soldiers, whether from past wars, peace time or the active conflict. On this day of rememberance, I'd like to remind everyone that many soldiers don't have the proper equipment they need and we can all help ... http://operation-helmet.org You can help save soldiers from devastating head wounds by contributing toward helmet liners that they should have anyway but don't.
