Ring Around The Rosies? Does anyone know what the song and the words mean? I really didn't until my friend at work told me,as we where just chatting about stuff and it just came up. I was surprised. When I was a child just thought it was a simple everyday song all of us kids sang. I won't give away the songs meaning, as I 'm just curious if anyone else knows what it means.

There are urban legend type hoaxes suggesting that the rhyme in a reenactment of the Great Plague of London or the bubonic plague, but modern folklorists are pretty united in say that is simply FALSE. The arguments were that during the plague people carries sweet smelling things in their pockets and that falling down meant dying of the plague, but scholars say, and I believe them on this, that the term "faling down" referred to bowing and curtseying, the female equivalent of bowing. Many of the really old customs such as May-baskets, Maypole winding, and some of the nursery rhymes, too, survived nearly intact, passed down from mother to daughter as recently as my own childhood, and when my own mum taught me this song the girls curtseyed using the word "down" as a cue and the boys bowed.

Aside from having studied medieval history in college, when in doubt I always double check with snopes, the experts in online hoaxes: http://www.snopes.com/language/literary/rosie.asp

I think the origins of this song actually goes back to the early Middle ages and was actually a reference to the Black Plague, and I right? Hehee

You are so right! I'm so bad for not knowing this, until today. When I think about being a little kid back in the day, and singing this song & dancing to it. It really makes me sad.., that I didn't understand the true meaning of it Then.
