as the end of a war. (Veteran's Day, Remembrance Day, Armistice Day) do your schools educate the students about the significance, and what do they do? I have been working at a small rural school three years. I was surprised the first year, but thrilled and proud ever since. Our students learn patriotic songs, learn about history, write letters to Veterans. They give a program, and then our kitchen crew prepares a great meal for all veterans who choose to come eat, socialize and remember. It makes me laugh, and cry, and it makes me proud. Our computer tech has put together a slide show honoring any vet who's name is turned in, showing pictures from their service days, and who, if anyone, in the school they are related to.Is this the only school around that does this.

For our schools in South Australia, it is compulsory to teach about the wars. This especially includes Anzac Day & Rememberance Day. I think it has gone overboard, in that children are taught the same things year in & year out. My daughter, who is in year 9, has been doing war studies for a number of years now. She tells me she loves the study of history, but is tired of studying wars, because they always do the same wars. In fact, she hates studying war now. Possibly this is due to poor teaching methodology, in that they haven't varied the war studies. I think, in keeping with the "war" theme, they should study non-violent means of protest, or similar. I thought of suggesting this to her school, but I think it would go down like a lead balloon.

That sounds like poor teaching to me. There is a ton of stuff to teach and to learn. I cannot believe that we did not do this when I was in school. I grew up just a mile or two from an Air Force Base for pete's sake. I have learned more in the last three years on my current job than I ever learned in school myself. I think the secret is that the teacher I work with is passionate about being a good citizen. To teach well I think is to teach with passion.

Our school usually as a very nice Remembrance Day assembly. But this year it was somehow more touching. There is no special reason why I feel this. But that's how I felt. We had the grandfather of one of the teacher's talking - he was visiting and agreed to talk in the assembly. We also had a student talking about his experience with war in his own country. Grade one kids had their peace pictures all over the gym and, the choir song "dona nobis pacem" beautifully, grade 5 students did something incredibly beautiful with "Flanders fields" - they not only said it, but they acted it as well in a simplified but very powerful way -. Grade 7 and 8 talked about how understanding others and other cultures, being tolerant and respectful is important and left their own suggestions for a peaceful world in postcards that they printed and gave to everyone.

One elementary school here has each grade put on a program each month throughout the year. The November one use to always be about Thanksgiving Day but now it's always a Vetern's Day program (it got too hard to change all the cute little traditional Thanksgiving songs from Indians to Native Americans so no one would be offended...I mean try it, "One little, two little, three little Native Americans") For the Veteran's Day program, the local VFW comes in and does the Honor Guard and Flag presentation and all the local veterans are invited to the program.

We once used to visit veterans on holiday, help them with some housework when i was at school. It was so intresting and meaningful. Veterans did great contributions to our peace and prosper today. Everyone should remember them and their sacrifices. You did a great job in child eduction.

Yes our curricculum also provides for the insight into the independence struggle my country had gone through. It nurtures the students from their early grade itself with the history of India's cultural heritage and its more than a century long fight for the freedom from the british. We too honour the freedom fighters on the independence day. When I read the history of freedom struggle I cannot describe the feelings I have, the images of those hundreds of people who attained martyrdom, the cellular jails in the andaman and nicobar islands ,everything causes a nostalgic pain of those times.I wish I had participated in the most crucial events of those period my country had gone through.I thank God and those who sacrificed their life for an independent nation beacause without them we will not have been enjoying this freedom.

Giving the vets a meal at the school sounds like a great way to honor them. It is good for children who might not have grandparents and veterans of other ages close by to see and know. Thanks much for sharing.

Hello! I remember my elementary days we would honor those Veterans. It was a good act, as a kid I learnt to appreciate them and what they've fought for. It is very good of your school to still do such celebration. Keep up the good work. Take care. ciao! c",)

I stand and applaud both you and your school. What a beautiful thing to read. Since my soldier son's birthday is November 11 (yesterday) it is especially important to me. Our state always has a Veterans day parade but I do not think enough tribute is given to all of the brave men and women who have stood up and put up to make this country great. I wish the politicians worked as hard to better out country LOL. The brave soldiers make it great and the politicians tear it down. So sad. Bravo to you and your school.
