OK, I started another discussion the other day, and as they often tend to do, it got a bit off-topic. People were asking for the recipe I use to make hard candy. My grandmother used to make this all the time and after she died my cousin and I revived the tradition. I haven't made it in a couple years, but I think I might mix up some batches this Holiday Season.

Usually they'll have the recipe with the candy flavoring - Lorann Oils, you can get it in cake and candy stores. Here's the whole recipe, I only make half at a time because a full batch gets hard too quick for me.
Bring to boil in heavy pan:
3 3/4 C Sugar
1 1/2 C Kayro Syrup (light)
1 C Water
Heat to soft crack - 290°
Remove from heat, add:
1 tsp Candy Flavoring (Lorann Oil)
Food coloring of choice (just a drop or two...)
Stir it up really good, then pour onto a cookie sheet covered with granulated sugar. Cover the top with more sugar. As it starts to firm up a bit (while it's still hot but manageable) cut into small peices (half in squares) with scissors. When I'm done cutting them all up, I place a collander over the cookie sheet and scoop the candy into it and let the loose sugar fall back onto the sheet. I'll reuse the sugar for a few batches, then cook it in a batch and start with fresh sugar.
You have to cut it up fairly quickly, and it will be very hot on your fingers, but after a few batches you hardly notice. Store it in an airtight container. I have probably only made 3 batches at a time because my hands start to hurt from the heat and the cutting.

Enjoy!!!! Let me know how it goes for you all!!!

Wow, what a bonus discussion!! I get two recipes in one place. I even have everything on hand for the fudge. With the peanut butter stirred in it sounds like one my hubby will like especially well.

You can get the Lorann oils in Wal Mart, in the crafts and fabric section, if your store still has them. Near the cake decoration stuff. At my grocery store (a Kroger branch) they are usually near the pharmacy. It will be interesting to try. I think someone I knew used to make red hard candy flavored with cinnamon.
