Couple to be Sent Back to "Nothing"

A couple from my area who originally came from the Phillippines are facing deportation about being here over 24 years because they allegedly lied on a form about their marital status (which they deny, saying it was a mistake) back in 1978. The husband is a respected and successful physcian with over 2000 patients and the wife owns and operates an ethic food shop and bakery in their home town. The couple has four children, two still in high school. This family has done nothing wrong in all the years they've been here; they've worked hard, paid their taxes, spoken our language and followed our laws. They have nothing or no one back in the Phillippines as their entire extended family is now here in the U.S. My heart breaks for these people and I only wish there were something I could do for them. What do you think, does this seem one bit fair to you? Annie

Hi Annie, That is a long time to live here. Wouldnt they be able to produce the marriage license that will show when they got married and when they applied for legal status here in the states? Seems that would clear things right up. Its really a shame that they are being treated this way, everyday criminal illegals come here from other countries and get away with all kinds of things. These people sound like productive citizens and are doing good things, raising a good family. I sure hope they get it sorted out soon so they can continue on living here like they have been. Bay Lay Gray xx

I just found some additional information on this. They applied for a Visa in 1978 and married in 1980. Apparently they failed to revise their marital status due to an oversight and not knowing it was required. This is an example of the ridiculous red-tape and bureaucracy in our government that really serves nobody! Annie

Oh no! Well hopefully they can clear it up and keep on living here, its not like they have been unruly and law breakers all this time, like you said. I wish they would pick on people that are actually here illegally instead of these people. Bay xx

No, anniepa, I don't think that is fair at all. That's one of the problems that often arises when they start poking into laws and misinterpreting them, they often don't work as they were meant to. These people who seem to be so firmly established in our society should use all of the tactics that are at their disposal to fight this issue. I know there should be some lawyers out there who could find a loophole that will allow them to remain in this country.

I think this is horrible. I heard about it when they were saying they only had one more week before needing to report. I keep hoping they get a last minute reprieve or something but haven't heard anything the past few days. It just bugs me that these people are being deported when 5 miles from here we have a large group of _______'s (I don't want to offend anyone) who don't speak English, took most of the jobs at one of our bigger employers, get government assistance and based on the timing of them turning up, I highly doubt they came here legally. This couple and their family have been in my prayers.

For every person like the one that you speak of, who is sent back on a technicality, and has children, there are hundreds of thousands more who are not friends with Homeland security, do not speak english, cannot afford a lawyer, that are turned in and deported every day. I think the entire situation is unfair. Did you know that if an illegal immigrant is caught at the workplace, they send them back - regardless of family situation? There are statistics out there about how many children are fatherless because their working parents are deported. Children are also afraid or forbidden to go to school because they think that the INS will pick them up there and send them back home. My point is that for every respectable, headline-making person like you speak of, there are hundreds of thousands of more unspoken for, and I think that's even more unfair than being sent home on a technicality.

well, it will be fair if they illegally immigrate to usa and settle there, work and do business.

I wonder how many examples like this contribute to that figure that gets quoted about people being in this country illegally. A lot of immigrants are wrongly considered illegal because people at the Dept of Immigration don't do their job. This is certainly an example of Immigration officials not doing their job properly. You say they're "facing" deportation? Does that mean that they'll get a chance to fight this in court?

It is not fair at all but that won't stop because this White House is afraid of Any illegal alien, so they will be deported unless a damn good lawyer takes the case.

It does not seem fair at all and I think that they should leave this couple alone. Especially, since they are contributing positively to our society. They need to spend energy and resources on the people who are sneaking out here and causing havac every where they go.

Wow this does seem very unfair. In Canada we have immigrants who street race and kill people and are charged. They do not get deported. I don't think that they will be sent back to nothing though. If he is as successful as you say then he will have lots of money to start a new home in the phillipines. I don't understand about the kids though. If they were born in the US... .doesn't that make them us citizens?
