What's the Longest You've Stayed Awake For?

Insomnia sucks, especially when it's really bad, but Im interested in knowing how long people have stayed awake for. Ive gone without sleep for 3 nights a while back. Also, does anything funny happen to people when they dont get sleep for a long time? One time I was looking at a book, and one of the letters floated up the page for a second, but when I blinked it was normal again. I think lack of sleep will make you go a lil crazy : |

I have insomnia pretty bad. It's been getting better over the last couple of months, I think because my boyfriend makes it a point to help me fall asleep by 11 at the latest most nights. It's finally coming natural. Usually, I just get extremely giggly. The most I've ever gone was 56 hours. I try not to stay up now but it's usually just because I have too much on my mind or just canNOT get comfortable. One time, I started sleep walking after not sleeping for two days, I ended up outside sleeping in the snow. Rather interesting. :P

I used to have chronic insomnia, but it had something to do with my job at the time. I could go days without sleep! lol. Farm hands work 24/7 plus I was studying too! Man, the calving and lambing seasons were the real killer! lol.

Lack of sleep can make you go a little crazy. The longest I have been awake was four and a half days. It was a lot of caffeine and a very busy time. Luckily I didn't drive anywhere then, I have a habit of falling asleep in the car and driving doesn't stop that from happening when I am really tired.

To answer your question I have been awake for going on 4 days now and it is not getting any better. I really think that my stress level has something to do with it. I have had a hard time getting an internet home business started and I really think that is a part of it. The crazy thing that I did was this morning. I got my son up to go to school, got him dressed, gave him breakfest and then put him in the bath like it was night time. He looked at me and and said Mom what are we doing going to bed or school? I think that I might need some help with sleeping do you have any sugestions?

i dont have insomia, and it does really sound sucks. but i was able to stay up awake when ever my son has fever. i cant really sleep when ever he is sick. i can only sleep if i am so sure that he has no fever at all.

yeah. it seems like worry is the one of the biggest factors in lack of sleep.

I longest I stayed awake was until the morning. I didn't get a wink's sleep for 23 hours. My insomnia worsens when I'm bothered by something or when I feel stressed but it goes away when I'm happy and contented.

hmmm. Probably, 3 days too! When I had to cram my term paper. ahaha. It was one helluva 3 days because it was a mixture of extreme hyperactivity and zilch energy. I would often space out or have repeated ideas swimming in my head... like I'm thinking about something, jump to another idea, and think about it again as if I didn't think of it before then I would have "deja-vu" moment and then realize again that I thought about it already. :) ahahahaha. Whoa! got mixed up there with my explanation. I tried it also, not sleeping for the fun of it, and well, it's not as fun-- because there is no pressure to keep you up in your game. :) ahahaha. But am pretty scared that I might actually be starting to develop insommia.:(

Haha yeah, i know what you mean about the deja-vu. It will mess with your head! One minute you're talking about something, then you forget what youre talking about so you start talking about something else... Same with thinking, like you said. Thank you for your response, but do be careful to try not to get insomnia. The health benefits of sleeping when your melatonin kicks in and getting a good, consistants night sleep on a nightly basis are great. I guess you live longer if you sleep good! My mom told me the other day that she had 2 great aunts who went to bed at night right when it got dark out.(even in the winter, when here it gets dark out at 4 oclock) Every night. They lived to be 94 and 96 years old! Weird stuff, but thanks again: )

Of course it will. You don't get enough dreaming or as it is called REM sleep. It makes the brain very tired and you will propably start getting hallucionations which I think it is worse than having insomnia. I sometimes have bad dreams but that is better than not sleeping at all.
@EMZo03 (213)
23 Nov 07
true that. One time I read that you can die from not sleeping.. like.. 11 days or something crazy like that

i went without sleep for 2 and a half days, when my thoughts were just so full of thoughts that it was absolutely crazy! i also haven't slept at another time for two days when i had to study for our final exams (i'm in college),and sleep simply wasn't an option. other than that, i'm still an insomniac, so i guess i'm pretty used to the lack of sleep by now. but it does suck, especially when you really wanna sleep, but your body and mind refuses to shut down--i hate it when that happens!

Longest time I was able to stay awake was 36 hours but it wasn't because of Insomnia. It's just that I had to do so many stuffs and sleeping wasn't an option. End-result? I guess it was just slightly different with the floating letters on that book you were looking at. In my case, everything felt light weight but not that I felt like floating lol hahaha After that I had slept for almost 24 hours straight. So much for payback ;-D
