An Ingredient In Perfumes: Ambergris--Do You Know What It REALLY is?

Okay, my discussion about honey which is nothing more than bee puke seemed to be such a hit, that I thought I'd start a discussion about another fact that many people might not know about, and that is one of the prime ingredients that has been used for centuries in the perfume industry. Although a laboratory chemical like substance has been created to substitute for ambergris and is not often used in perfumes manufactured in the United States, it is still used in many of the perfumes made say in France... A good indicator that Ambergris is still used in a perfume will be by it's cost...the more expensive the perfume, you can just bet, Ambergris is in it. No doubt, a perfume like Joy, which is tooted as the most expensive perfume in the world uses it. Ah--now you ask..what is Ambergris? Hehehe...Hold on to your hats for this gem. To quote this source from Wikipedia (okay I know it's not a great source, but there are others) ..."Ambergris occurs as a biliary secretion of the intestines of the sperm whale, and can be found floating upon the sea, or in the sand near the coast. Because giant squids' beaks have been found embedded within lumps of ambergris, scientists have theorized that the whale's intestine produces the substance as a means of facilitating the passage of hard, sharp objects that the whale might have inadvertently eaten. Ambergris can be found in the Atlantic Ocean; on the coasts of Brazil and Madagascar; and on the coast of Africa, of the East Indies, The Maldives, mainland China, Japan, India, Australia, New Zealand and the Molucca islands. However, most commercially collected ambergris came from the Bahama Islands, Providence Island, etc. It is also sometimes found in the abdomens of whales..." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambergris Here's another source about Ambergris http://www.profumo.it/perfume/aromatherapy/essential_oils/ambergris_1.htm Here's a listing of some perfumes with ambergris in it: http://www.nextag.com/ambergris-perfume/search-html And believe it or not folks, yes, you can get pure ambergris oil to wear as well, wouldn't you just love that?? So folks..those who wear perfumes and colognes..both women and men, how do you feel now that you know that this yukky glob from a whale might be in that favorite scent you wear??

I remember the reaction I got from a group of children when I helped out at a local school. They were doing a class project on animals and we were covering unusual animal products so I told them about ambergris - LOL the class teacher was moer than a little surprised too.

Did you mention about bee puke too..LOL. Think they still use "civet" too for perfumes which is from a medium sized member of the cat family

Well.... this is quite intersting. Now I don't know how to feel. Between Bee puke and this. I do like to wear perfume, but will think more about it in the future. Goodness sake can we just go back to the simple days? Does everything have to be so comlicated?

Actually pure ambergris is supposed to smell good, which is why it has been used, but still wouldn't catch me wearing a perfume that might have it

I remember learning that now that you mentioned it, but I'd completely forgotten about it. I'm not sure where I learned it, whether it was in school or if I just read it somewhere at some point in my life years ago. Since I can't afford expensive perfume I think I can safely say I have no hukky whale glob in my possession at this time. Great topic! Annie

Hello Pye, That's a pretty interesting fact! Sorry though, doesn't change a thing! I'm not sure if it's in Beautiful by Este Lauder or not, but that's really about the only expensive perfume I buy. I use a lot of Bath and Body Works, it's not that expensive, do you think it's in there too? I'll have to look, but I still don't think it will change my mind. It's not hurting the whale right? It's just something that it secretes from its body naturally. Now if it harmed it maybe, I might be a little more conscious of my purchases. :) Bay Lay Gray xx

No from what I understand Bath and Body Works is animal free, so doesn't use any animal products or tests on animals. Not sure about Este Lauder though..No, no harm is done to the whale to get it, but then some some would be against using anything that has any animal product in it

I was thinkig I saw them on your Don't list on the website. Thanks for confirming. :) I love B&B Works! hehe Well I guess since I can't see it, that's why I dont worry about it. As long as the whale is not hurt in anyway to get it, then I'm good. If they were capturing these whales to get the ingredient, I would be more considerate about my choices. Bay xx

I like perfumes, just not very strong overpowering ones, and usually get light scented colognes..no I don't think Brute or Old Spice would have ambergris in it, as it is usually in the very expensive perfumes.

I'm really laughing out loud at this (although it is no laughing matter). I don't know why I assume some things, but I just assumed that everyone already knew this. I guess it was part of the hippie culture to know that fact and maybe that was before your time. I went into a candle shoppe a few years back. One side of the store sold the candles and separated by a counter, on the other side you could watch the candles being made. The gentleman that was pouring the candles was about my age and saw me bent down and picking up some of the patchouli candles out of a basket. He loudly announced to anyone willing to listen in the store, "Hey, You, Lady, The one with the Patchouli Candles!" I turned and looked at him, and he said, "I bet I know what you were doing in the 60s and 70s!" I just thought I would share that with you~Donna

I am allergic to the chemicals that we have in the modern perfume, so I would rather use the biliary secretions of the intestines of the sperm whale. I was able to use the perfumes of years ago, but now I cannot use them because someone decided to substitute a chemical substance for that which is found in nature. So what you are telling me is to use a chemical based perfume and have my eyes water and my nose sting. No thank you. I will stick with the yukky glob. Too bad I do not have enough money to buy those French perfumes.

I guess that is why more people are allergic to perfumes since they now use the chemical substitute...I really don't have to worry...I haven't been able to afford some of my favorite expensive perfumes in quite awhile either :(

Next thing you're gonna tell us is that musk is "a penetrating odor obtained from a gland of the male musk deer, which is situated between its stomach and genitals." ;o)

I do love the sound of the word, pyewacket. And, yes, I did know where ambergris comes from. It is strange how some of the most distasteful-sounding things are usually the most expensive. Thanks to skin, and other allergies, I cannot wear perfumes and colognes except in moderation. I would probably never be able to afford those that contain ambergris anyway, LOL.

Ambergris is actually supposed to smell quite good which is why they use it...I have no problem wearing perfumes, just haven't been able to buy any in awhile, but like the scented oils you can get in the dollar stores.. Gee, though just thinking and wondering if they are made in China...LOL

ok, gross! What i'm wondering, is how someone comes up with the idea to use this kind of stuff, in the first place. Are they just sitting around one day, playing with whale parts, and say "hey, let's put this in some perfume". Wierd to me, but I guess not to them. All I can really say, is eww gross.

They also use the musk glands of skunks for the base of some perfume. I think that should push a few buttons!

it smells lovely. I'd rather wear it than musk or civet, as it's not harvested from a whale, in captivity and treated cruelly. and it smells nicer. I mean seriously, spray from anal glands people. you wouldn't wear it if it came from your dog.

There is a lot we don't know about...lol. And probably don't need to know about, my question now would be since we now know this...what is the purpose of this ingredient in expensive perfumes? Another question would e is it really worth the extra expense to know that we have genuine whale secretions in our perfume? And another question yet, is it worth hunting whales to extinction in other to pay exorbitant sums of money for our perfume to have genuine whale secretions as an ingredient? Oh the joys of an inquiring mind...lol.

Yes, the inquiring mind wants to know..LOL. Have no idea the purpose why ambergris was used at all in the perfume business. No I don't think whales are hunted just for ambergris...it's a secretion the whale ejects out, then floats on the water, but still,..yuk
