Our Second Showing Of The Old House

Today my husband and I went back to see the old house again. One of my daughters and her boyfriend also came along. My hubby got up under the house and also in the attic to check the structure and condition of the wood. He didn't find any signs of rotting or termites. Of course, the house will go through an official inspection if we decide to go ahead with the purchase but he wanted to get a good idea of the structure before we go any further.
The house will need some more support put up underneath. There are pilings and some that were done with stones and wood. Because of the age of the house (1860) all this needs to be reinforced. We all also have to consider the cost on insulating the attic.
We decided to think about it over the weekend and decide if we want to make an offer. The drive into town where we work will be about an hour drive and 60 miles one way. That's going to be an increase in the budget on gasoline so another thing to consider.
Here's a picture of the house again for those that missed it the first time.
Just wanted to give you all an update!

The house sounds great, but the cost of gas and the cost of all the other repairs needs to be taken into consideration.
We had insulation blowen into our house this summer and it was 1000$. We where able to do it in three payments but it was a cost.
Gas in our town is 3.45-3.60 per gallon so it is quite high here. I would not move away from my hubbies job if we had a choice.
Good luck on the decisions.

I love old houses, and would love to have one to fix up. But there is a lot of expense to consider. Everything on a house that old has been added, and I would be very careful about the state of the plumbing and electricity, etc. If you and your family are very handy at that sort of thing, then you could probably handle it. Thinking about the commute, there is also the time involved, which means less time for doing things to the house and with your family. As I said, I love old houses, but you do have to be careful with them.

The house underwent a total remodeling in early 2007. It's just the workmanship of some of the things done that is not to our liking and would be redone when time and money permits. We currently have this one on hold and are checking out some other options because of the distance for both of us driving to work.

Looking at my limited experiences with houses, and that of my kids, I am understanding more and more why the best advice is to "fall in like" with a house, because if you fall in love with it, you become blind to the pitfalls. You want this house because of its setting, and that is terrific, but the gas thing was a biggy that jumped right out at me, and also what your time spent driving actually is worth. Here's to clear thinking.
