Have you ever been disappointed by a knitting pattern?

I usually make my patterns up as I go along, but occasionally I will follow a pattern. I was wondering though, for those of you that regularly follow commecial patterns, have you ever been disappointed by a patten that you had really wanted to knit, but the end result just didn't live up to your expectations?

I am someone like you who dosn't usually follow a pattern but I do on occasion. I was trying to make a baby blanket that I saw online, I thought I followed the pattern perfectly. When I was finished it was about an 8 inch by 8 inch square.... Yup, I kinda guessed before I was finished that something just wasn't right.. lol but continued and got nowhere.

I always find that the necks of jumpers never ever work for me unless they are v shaped. So now I always pick out a patterns without a round neck as they normally end up so tight they could strangle you if you actually managed to get it over your head.

Many times. If I watch it closely, I can sometimes make adjustments before a garment is finished so that it fits better than the pattern would make it. I sometimes make up my patterns as I go, but more often, I follow a pattern, then decide to do this or that a little differently.

I am happy to see this post, here's why. I can knit as in plain knitting, pearl stitch and I have made many pairs of mens socks. I can crochet single and double crochet.I have made many afghans even ones for my car. The problem is I can absolutely NOT follow a pattern. Just so you know I am a good reader, it's not like I can't read but for some reason my brain won't work with pattern directions for knitting or crochet.

Absolutely! I do swatches, but that still doesn't give you everything you need to know. I have a glorious book by Elizabeth Zimmerman called 'Knitting Without Tears'... it is basic patterns, knit on circular needles, and in all sizes. I then add my favorite pattern stitch... I have nothing but success with this method... of course, it is just for clothing, but that is where beauty and accuracy really count!

well i learned to knit three years ago when i was a senior in high school and when i was taught to knit i was never taught to read a pattern so i have always just had to wing everything that i wanted to make and i also have always had to make up the stitches as i go from off the top of my head so no i have not ever been disappointed by a pattern but that is because i have never had the chance to be disappointed by a knitting pattern since i do not know how to read a knitting pattern
