A 70-year-old woman kept 237 dogs in her home in Texas. She loves the dogs very much but there are too many of them, which is more than she could handle. "They had plenty of food and plenty of water but were not living in healthy conditions," Copeland said. "Many were covered in feces and urine. I think she slowly accumulated them to where they were more than she could handle." What do you think of this woman? Is she doing the right thing? Is the authority doing the right thing when they took her dogs away? Read more here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071220/ap_on_fe_st/odd_too_many_dogs;_ylt=Alhe.Wpm3RxYCMFkk8fmKY3tiBIF

Oh I feel so sorry for people like this, they love their animals so much but one has to be responsible with animals for their own sake so I guess sometimes you just have be in a position where you must put the animals first and do what is best for them...

Hi,there! Is that true? It's really hard to imagine that one person can keep 237 dogs. That would be very difficult. Moreover, the place should be big enough and she needs to have plenty food for the dogs.I have never heard anything like that before. How can she handle them? It's hard to say whether the authority is totally right.Since the woman likes the dogs very much,it's a little bit cruel for her to leave the dogs. But on the other side,it's also a problem for the envionment and maybe also the neighbours.I just hope they can find the best way to deal with the issue. Thanks for the discussion and have a nice day^_^

The authorities were right to take the dogs away. They pose a health hazard not only to themselves but the old lady. They could leave her a few, but 237, that's a little too much. Hopefully, they will find a good home to those dogs.

its raining dogs - too much dogs will cause confusion and animal competition
wow, thats a lot of dogs... even if she can feed them, and give everything, dogs still have that competition and pressure in a crowd.. these dogs needs personal care, one on one with the real owner and trainer. with so much around them, they build the dog or animal attitude.. instead of the domesticated love approach. it will confuse them and will live restlessly... thats why the attention is not given to all... i think its not bad to love dogs, infact its a blessing... but in this situation, keeping too much animals, will consume space and wont help the whole population.. i wish she can donate or give it to people who needed and wanted dogs most.. plus they can be taken care of personally, not just let them wander all over the place with no use but to compete with dog members.. take care^_^

I think 237 dogs are too much. She will not memorized each name of the dog. Competition for food and water will like hell. Poor the dogs.. but still they must left her 2 or tree dogs to keep her company, though..

Poor dogs! I bet she was trying to do the right thing, but if she can't properly care for them, then She must be doing the right thing by letting the authority take the dogs. After all that is a LOT of dogs. I dont think a normal young person could care for all those dogs little own a 70 year old woman, that's a LOT OF POOP even if each of them only pooped once a day! how would you ever keep up with cleaning them?! I personally dont like dogs too much, i'm more of a cat person, but i'd never have that many cats either!!

I dont think anyone can properly care for 237 dogs. I have 5 dogs and it's alot of work. Yes I think they need to help her out and make it more managable for her. I would hate to think that she is neglecting her own health and eating right to make sure they have food etc. And are they all properly vacccinated or spay or neutered ? I doubt it not with that many. That's too overwhelming for someone her age, she should be enjoying going to bingo or something not having the responsiblity of taking care of that many dogs.

I am a dog/all animal lover but that is way to many. I think she must have been a bit dippy. I have 3 dogs and as they are like my children 3 is enough to get the full care and attention they need. The annual checks up alone costs over $100.00 each not to mention all the regular vet care, medication and food so unless she was very wealthy and had a lot of help in their care I do not believe she could (especially at her age) take proper care of them and should be taken away from her.

yes the authority was doing the right thing to take her dogs away. that is way to many dogs for one person to have...you cant give them all the love and attention they so dearly crave. and they fact that they were covered in feces and urine clearly states she could not care for all of them.

The authorities are right to have removed the dogs. 237 is definately a health hazard (to the lady as well as the animals), particularly if the woman is not taking care of them properly.

Wow... 237 dogs is an awfully a lot... i think she loves dogs to much that she doesn't know how to handle it... and i also think it is also caused by loneliness...an old woman who lives alone can find comfort in having a lot of animal around... but in her case it was too much... talking all her dogs away might make her feel devastated... i hope she can keep some of them as company in her home...

This lady agreed to an interview with the local news and it aired tonight. This woman looks so good for her age and you can tell she goes to the beauty shop. She said that she was real picky about who she let adopt a puppy because she didn't want them to end up at the dog pound but like she said they ended up there anyway. She just wants the dogs to have good homes. Right now they already have over 100 people interested in adopting a dog from this bunch, already have filled out application but the animal shelter still haven't gone before the judge to see about getting ownership of them. The lady didn't say that she wanted any of the dogs so not sure if she will try to get one or two of them.

I also think she will be happy for her dogs that they get good homes. It is nice for people to adopt the dogs. I am happy there are lots of animal lovers in the world.

From what I have read the full story is not out there for people to read. This happened in the city I live in and we get updates on the dogs daily. This woman said she was a dog breeder and it just got out of hand. To begin with, she was not licensed to be a breeder. The man that come to do some work reported her because of the smell coming from the house. The animal control workers said this morning that the conditions in the house were horrible and that many of them are having problems with their breathing because of the stinch. Most of the dogs were matted and some have to be shaved. The dogs were very well fed and watered and fat little dogs. She also has a garage full of crates so I guess they had free roam of the house. Animal control will go before the judge to get ownership of the dogs so they can get them all ready for adoption. All the dogs are good breed, not any mutts. One dog had to be put down and the lady said that dog just came to her house a couple of days before this occured. If any more news I will be glad to update. My daughter wants to adopt one of the Yorkies. :)

I did forget to state that in our city you are not allowed more than 6 animals per household, which is too many for me, my one puppy and one cat are enough to keep me happy. If she had been a licensed breeder she would have been allowed more but not this many and not forever.

I am not sure if it is wrong or right. If the dogs have escaped the roads, and at least have food and shelter then it probably is right of her to have kept them.On the other hand, too many dogs mean sooner or later they will not be treated well.If the authorities can provide better conditions for them, they should keep them, and provide a safer environment.

makatas, these dogs were not stray dogs. She only claims one dog was a stray that come to her house the other day and that is the one who they had to put down.

I think people and organizations should have helped her. I think her love for dogs was great, but no animal organization was able to support her. I think this is where the different organization and people should have get together and should have helped her. I think two to three people or helpers should have been hired and more place should have given for her to keep the dogs. Next money should be collected from all over the world to support these hired people and also the dogs. I believe what makes a person great is the places like this where a person or people who is able to take initiate to help them. I really believe that there should have been some organization or people to support her and most probably she might have been able to support all the dogs with some assitants. She has a big heart for it. Only thing that seperated her from doing this is money and helpers.

Wow, it just does not seem normal to me. It is quite unusual. I think the authorities did the right thing to take the animals away. Animals have a right to a good life too. Living in a mess of feces and urine is not really a good life for the dogs. The lady should have realized that while she was accumulating them. Maybe, she might have loved the dogs; but it was a rather selfish sort of love. I have a feeling she was keeping them coz she wanted to fill some emotional void within her.

I would wonder how many are fixed. If she is accidently producing more and more animals.... Anyway, it doesn't seem that anyone could care for that many dogs. I would suggest that they collect money and workers to help her get her place cleaned up and to fix the animals. Then she can have a few of them back. The citations seem stupid, after all she sounds like she was just trying to do the right things and she has to be spending a lot of money to feed all of those animals.

stories like these happen all the time sadly... but just as someone could not care for 237 people or children, it is not possible to do for animals either. It would be nice if there was a way to help these people before it gets to the point they are being fined/sent to jail and the animals are being neglected...

I think this lady went into this with all the right intentions but come on! When you can't move in your entire house and you smell like poo there's a problem. I feel bad that her dogs were taken away but they need to get proper care and to be cleaned and run around becuase I bet they haven't gotten great physical exercise.
