Is Homeownership just a dream for you?

I would say that home ownership is the dream of many people. Is it yours? I lost my home and I have only myself to blame. I pay rent for an apartment now; and I will say that I learned a very valuable lesson. I would constantly hear that home ownership is so much better than renting, more beneficial financially and so on. If you pay a mortgage do you really own the home? Who can commit to a thirty year mortgage right now with the job security crisis; and I do believe there is a job security crisis. I found the loss of my home to be a blessing actually. It helped me learn more about the process and my obligations in obtaining a home loan. Right now renting is a better choice for me than owning. I am able to make a shorter commitment as a renter, which is not so bad; while I try to build my business and get on a track to financial well being. Hopefully I will have a home to call my own in the future but right now I cannot see it happening. Please share some of your stories of homeownership.

My husband and I have rented and lived in military housing. We have bought our house 2 years ago. I really don't see the perks of owning a home compared to renting. I really didn't enjoy having to pay 300 to have a tiny piece on our upstairs ac fixed. I wonder if I can use that towards my taxes, lol. If something ever happens and we lose the house, oh well, we will go back to apartments. At least then if something goes wrong we won't have to pay for it. Plus we will save money in gas from not having to mow the lawn.

Well, if you think about it, your paying for gas to mow the lawn. You just didn't have to mow it. We would do that, except we have a lot of grass to mow. If it wasn't for the good school system, we wouldn't have bought our home in the first place. My kids old school system was really screwed up. This year they went to wearing school uniforms, ugh. So glad though we got out of there before I had to buy uniforms for 2 kids. Don't look at losing your home as a bad thing, it's just God's way of telling you that you didn't need it yet.

Hi chertsy, Thank you for your response. I too like knowing that someone else will fix the repairs as a renter. Home repairs can be a financial nightnmare; and I never mowed my lawn he he he. I always paid someone to do it. Good luck with your home. Take Care and Happy New Year.

I have both owned a home and rented, and lived in an apartment for over a year. Living in an apartment suited me fine at that point in my life because it was just me, and I didn't need a house and yard etc. We are currently renting a house because he'll be taking retirement in a year or so and we are not sure if we want to stay in PA or move south of the Mason-Dixon, I'm originally from the south and he's lived here all his life and is tired of the cold and snow lol. So as to what is best, I think it just depends on a person's individual needs at that particular time.

Thank you for your response palonghorn, Your are very knowledgeable about this discussion. There have been points in your life where your desires and needs changed and you were able to roll with those changes and you were able to have these choices; one of which was home ownership. Good luck and Happy New Year.

I agree many people can't afford to buy a home. My area homes start at half a million dollars and a person would be debt the rest of their life unless they won the lottery or were given the money. Several of my friends bought a house in another area sold it to have the down payment to get a house in this area. I wish there was more affordable housing.

Home is an apartment that you lives with your family. Old people prefer to live in their own home. While travelling we missed the comfort of the home. Home gives comfort to every one than rented house. So home is my dream like every one.

Hi bindhusudan, Thank you for your response. Yes that is true. A home of your own can provide more comforts than a rented place; and I hope your dream of home ownership comes true.
