How old do you think kids should be before they get a mobile phone?

I would have to say age 18 as I don't really see the need for kids to use a mobile phone...

Mobile phone is an important instrument of life. It was luxry in past, but it is basic need of today's life. Every one of us contains a mobile phone and we are living at as short distance from each other as one phone call. It is very important for children to have thier mobile phone. specially when they go out of their home or away from their homes. when a child comes on the age of operating a mobile, i.e about 10 years of age he or she should use mobile. mobile is safety of the children. But they should not keep very expensive one because the danger of theft is also a risk for children and their parents.

I think it depends on the phone. Cingular/ATT has a phone called a Firefly. It has 3 buttons on it. One for mom. One for dad. And then a button for emergency. This is ideal for youngsters like my daughter. An actual mobile phone for dialing and texting etc. I don't know. Guess that is left up to the parent to decide.

I didn't get one till my freshman year of high school. My grandma got it for me because I was starting cheer leading so my grandma wanted me to have a way to get a hold of her or my mom if I needed to be picked up from practice or any other reason. I think its a good idea to have them get a cell phone once they start going out and doing things with friend with out a parent because then they can call for help if needed.

Shouldn't go by age, but maturity level. My 11 year old has a Nextel already, and he does chores to earn keeping it. My next son, is ADHD, and don't control himself much at all, he'll be lucky if I let him have one at 16 unless he changes his behavior.

oh, let me add in, since your thinking of getting a phone for your kid. The reason I went with Nextel is: The i530 is nearly unbreakable, you can literally throw it at a brick wall, pick it up, and make a call. And second, Nextel has GPS tracking in real time. Any time I want to know where my kid is, day or night, I can go to Nextels site, log in, and see within a few feet of where his phone is (don't ever tell your kid you can track them with their phone, or they'll find ways around that, kids aren't dumb). Lastly, the push to talk feature of nextel is great for kids. He can talk to a lot of his friends using that, without even touching his minutes (nextel push to talk is unlimited anytime, day or night).

I think about sixteen or seventeen is the right age. Hey, maybe even eighteen. Sure, a cellphone is nice to have for emergencies and such, but it isn't necessary by any means. Anyone below sixteen probably isn't going to use their phone for anything substantial besides texting "Johnny Doe." So personally, I wouldn't purchase a phone for my kid until they were about seventeen. And maybe not even then. Maybe they'd have to pay for it on their own.
