I have a cold. Not a bad one, but my nose is not working LOL Or rather it only works if I"m standing up. As soon as my head hits the pillow I suddenly am so congested I have trouble falling asleep. I know that it probably has something to do with the pressure inside the nose that changes as I lay down, but it really bothers me big time. I ended up buying a nasal spray but to be honest it didn't really work that well. I still kept waking up throughout the night because I couldn't breathe. It's actually interesting because I am a mouth breather. I don't usually breathe trough my nose, but when it's plugged up it bothers me - go figure LOL ANy one has that same problem? Or any ideas why it only plugs up when I lay down?

Try using the Breath Right nasal strips. I have heard a lot of good things about them.

I swear by those nasal striops during allergy season. They really do work. They stop snoring too.

Geez, I am just getting over the same cold. I was using Afrin PM to get through the night. I have no idea why I got congested at night, but I did notice that the congestion did get worse through the evening and when to crisis when I laid down.

Yes, laying down really makes it worse. I really didn't have any special problem during the day, but at night... laying down was the real problem:)

Whenever I have a clogged nose, I always tend to sleep a bit propped up to keep from having my sinuses fill up. There are a million remedies to alleviate a stuffed nose, but what I find most effective is maintaining a healthy diet while I'm sick and continuing to exersice as possible. Some things that tend to help when my nose is really plugged: any hot drink, horseradish, spicy foods, and steam baths. While any warm drink works, teas made with ginger and lemon are especially effective - add a bit of honey if you wish. A friend of mine swears on a mixed juice with echinacea and added powdered cayenne pepper (as much as you can comfortably tolerate), which may partly help due to the vitamin C in cayenne and the effect of spicy foods on clearing the sinuses. Inhaling warm vapors, especially with menthol or plain mint helps too.

Yes sleeping a bit propped up helped a lot. When I have a cold I really like to drink lemon tea with honey. NOt only it soothes my throat but the steam as I'm drinking it helps too.

You could try using another pillow to elevate your head when you lie down, arkaf. I have the same problem, and the nasal spray that my doctor gave me doesn't help much either. Those strips you place over your nose also are very helpful. I hope you are feeling better soon.

I've been thinking about trying those strips for a while and when I'm at the pharmacy I always forget. SO they have been helpful for you? I think I"m going to make a not to buy them next time. Thanks for reminding me of those :)

I can't breathe through my nose when I have a cold. I have a family history of asthma and my husband says these are the first symptoms that I might be prone to asthma too. What helps me is that I have to sleep with my head positioned higher than my body. So, try putting one more pillow and raising your head so that you are in a half sitting position.

Yes, I am going to try that. That I know, nobody in my family has asthma, but I always had trouble with my nose. I guess the fact that I broke it as a kid might help too LOL The thing is I usually do breathe trough my mouth, all the time, so it shouldn't bother me if my nose was plugged or not, but it does grrr :)

I make frequent use of a non medicated nasal spray during the day, and take an antihistamine for the night. Some people like the plug in Vicks product that makes your room smell of menthol. The mucus draining product that they show for your chest also works for your head, it does not cared where the mucus is. I know that part of the blockage when you lay down the angle of the passages changes. I hope you feel really better soon.

I try not to use nasal decongestants much. Usually I already have a bit of trouble breathing during the night when it's winter because of the heating. It makes the air so dry, so I use saline solution drops and that helps. But it didn't help this time . On the other hand neither did the nasal decongestant LOL I tried vick's before. THe one that we rub on our chest and throat is not too bad although I don't like the taste or smell of menthol. But the one you plug in I hated. Tonight it was actually better I did the steam thing and then used an extra pillow so my head was higher and I was able to sleep better :)

Yes, this is normal. Try to use high pillow. You may want to have something calming too. Maybe herbal tea and soft music that you can listen to....

Thank you for the ideas. I think I am going to try all:) A hight pillow sounds really good to me right now and the tea will not only be soothing but the vapor might help with the congestion as well.

Yes quite a lot of people mentioned those and I am convinved:) I am going to try them. I am feeling much better now. At least I am not congested anymore. I always have a bit of trouble during winter because my in laws like to keep the house really warm - and I mean really ! LOL - and the air dries up. But for that I just use the saline solution and it works. Hope you had a wonderful day :)

I use Olbas Oil in my bath, on my tissues, in a burner and a few drops on my pillow. This seems to really help me breathe better. I'm also suffering at the moment, not so much with a blocked nose, but I believe I have a chest infection and I'm finding it difficult to sleep also, because I'm coughing a lot. Nothing seems to shift that... not even the Olbas Oil. lol. Brightest Blessings for a speedy recovery.

I think you'll find Olbas Oil very helpful. There's lots of ways to use it, and you only need a drop at a time. Thank you for your wishes. I am already feeling somewhat better. Hope you get better soon too.

I am not really sure of what Olbas Oil is, but I will tesearch, if it works I'm all for it. Thankfully I don't have a cough it's more just the blocked nose at night. Hope you feel better soon :)

I suffer from blocked sinuses all the time. The best thing for it is to do several steams a day. Pour boiling water into a bowl and put a towel over your head and sit for a while inhaling the steam. It works even better if you use a few drops of tea tree oil and/or eucalyptus oil in the water.

It's possible your conjestion is in the ear canals also. you may even have an ear infection. I was told this is one of the reasons the nostrils will seem to clog only when lying down or only on the side you are laying on. Of course I really have no idea if this is correct or not. But it is how it seems to be with me also. I hope you fell better soon.

That's something I never thought about. I don't think I have an ear infection but if the ear canal can be congested it's a possibility too. Because it's exactly what happens with me. Specially because it always gets worse on the side I am lying on. It's better now, but I am still using the saline solution drops - not the medicated decongestant - because with the heating the air is very very dry.

IF the saline solution is making a difference then I would think dry air is definitely the culprit. I'm glad you are feeling better.

You can try elevating your pillow a bit when you are lying down, you can add a small pillow to your usual pillow to elevate your head, so you can breathe when you sleep. I also doing that when I have congestion, and stays at home get some rest, more fluids it can make you weewee if you drink every minute but it helps to take away the viruses in your body. Try it, otherwise consult your doctor if symptoms persist LOL. I much cheaper than an over the counter nasal sprays.

I am not working until next week, so I am really resting which is good, it would be worse if I had to go to work. I always drink lots of water, so I'm ok on that one :) The higher pillow worked a bit so I was able to sleep almost the whole night. Thanks for the ideas :)
