We Just Saw the Silliest Commercial

Can Your Bear it? - Does anybody care?

Two animated cartoon bears are running along the beach with their tushes in a knot over something. They appear identical except that one is pin and the other is blue. The clear insinuation is that one bear is a girl and one a boy. The look relieved when they see two little shacks at the water's edge and rush to use them. Then the makers of toilet paper show us two different packages, one with a pink label and one blue. Are they trying to say men and women need different kinds of toilet paper? I turn to hubby, who being conservative in these matters really doesn't want to see this sort of ad on TV either, and ask him if men and wwomen need different TP. I'm trying not to think about how grandpa used to speak of corn cobs and old telephone books. He didn't care much for newfangled things. Hubby says, "That would make a good discussion for myLot!" So what about it? Do you think if they pulled the adorable animated series Creature Comforts off prime time because it was allegedly too risque, they should let animated bears wiggle their bare bear behinds in ads? If I can overcome my inhibitions and post this sort of thing, you can overcome yours and reply! No inhibitins? Good, you can reply too! Everyone uses toilet paper, I think. So please, everyone, chip in here with your opinion.

I don't care what they do on TV since I don't watch it. But I do think far too many trees are cut down to make toilet paper. I think all bathrooms should have a Bidet equipped with a blow-dryer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bidet Bidet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'll second the vote for bidets. Saw a really nice one in Lowe's hardware not long ago., but it was awfully expensive. They have add-on models that are affordable, but I cannot believe they would be up to speed. While we are at it, may as well have a self-cleaning toilet. But, not meaning to be disagreeable, I do draw the line at replacing TP altogether. The Blow-dryer does not strike me as a universally acceptable solution.

ANd I'll "third" it :) I had never seen so many houses without bidet's until I came to this country. I really thought every washroom had one.

You mean the Charmin commercial. I have read so many discussions here that I was embarrassed about answering. And this would qualify as one. I liked the old Charmin commericals where they asked, "Where's the Charmin'?" I do not think that having bears wriggling next to trees, showing their bums, etc. a good idea. We all know what toilet paper is used for and someone might get the idea that bears are friendly and the reason the toilet paper costs a bit more is because the forest rangers are setting out little shacks and putting in separate toilet paper for the boy and girl bears.

On the other hand, although I cannot tell you what brand it is, I like the commercials about the paper being "Lab tested" and with all the cute puppies. I think it is because I enjoy the play on words.

Thank you for overcoming your scruples enough to reply here. I am open-minded about many things, but a bit humorless on this subject. Sometimes I skate a little close to the ice here on myLot, but generally in an understated way. This is not exactly national TV, but I still like it kept clean enough here for families to myLot together. I try to leave a little for the imagination.

i think its ridiculous to have different colors for toilet papers. why should they make it different for males and females? the toilet paper's essence of being is the same for a male and a female so what's the sense of making it in different color? why should it be pink for female and blue for males? i mean, both gender would use it on the same part and on the same time right? it would have made a little sense if they were talking about feminine wipes and masculine wipes (if there are any) since pink would probably be made of different materials than that of blue. ^.^ these kind of commercials are the reason why there is stereotyping between males and females. why there is masculine colors and feminine colors. when in fact, every colors can be for everybody. this is why its hard to find clothes for men. ^__^;;

Right on the TP and right on the colors, too. I can never find cargo shorts for women with the features I want, so I alter the one's hubby doesn't like anymore. I have done this so often that now when he buys a pair of shorts he asks me if I like the color. He likes his clothes new and I like mine "lived in" so it works out perfectly. I take off the belt loops and all of the pocket flaps and other bulky stuff to make the fit trimmer, and bring in the waistline a bit.

If that makes you blush, then what do you do when they get to the really personal adds? I do not watch much TV. I stick to the stations like PBS and Time Warner that have no Adds. And I use the cheapest scott single ply which is good enough for me. No pinky frills.

It doesn't make me blush, I just don't like them exploiting the bears. Good for you! I am not much interested in frills either. I actually filled out a paid survey on toilet paper once. It was pretty bizarre.

I think it's all subliminal - bear butts or bare butts. I have seen the commercial too and found it odd. Personally I wouldn't pay the ridiculous price for I think Charmin it is? I don't want cardboard, but hey Angel Soft is cheap and good!

I quite agree. I didn't like the one with the tree either. There are several brands that are just as good and a lot cheaper. We just buy what is on sale as long as it is 2 or 3 ply and quilted.
