Hi, I was wondering what were everyone views on a 16 year old female getting a tattoo. See I a 16 and I am all into body piercings and tattoos and I was wondering do you think that I was too young to get one. My mom says that I have to have a good reason for getting one and untill I have one then I must wait untill I am 18 but I don't think that's fair. Do you think I should wait untill I turn 18 or can you help me out with ways to reason with my mom. My dad says that she should just let me go ahead because it's my body and not theirs. What are you guys views.

Well, honestly, I kind of agree with your mom. (Sorry!) Not that I think tattoos are the worst thing in the world or anything. I just happen to know that over the years, your tastes and interest change pretty drastically from the time you're 16. So what you might love on your body now, you might regret later. I have a few friends who impulsively got tats when they were teenagers and now they hate what they chose and having it removed is expensive and painful. The thing is it's not like dying your hair some crazy color or even getting your navel pierced. It's perminant. So my advice would be to wait just a little longer, until you know you're going to get something that you'll still love when you're 80. Also, whatever you do, don't get some guy (or girl's) name tattooed on your body. The day after you have it done, it's practically gauranteed that you'll break up and have to have that person's name on you forever. If you're going to get one, try to have it be something that means something to you. And since you don't know what kind of career you're going to want yet, try to get it someplace inconspicuous so that you can hide it if necessary.

I don't agree with 18. But I'd suggest waiting a bit more before getting a tattoo. You might not like tattoos when you're 20, then what would you do if you already have one?

Good question.......Ummmmmm see I have never thought about it that way. I know that once I got it and I didn't want it I wouldnt have the money to get it removed....... Let me think about it a little longer.

I think body piecings are ok to have at 16 years old, because if you ever don't want them anymore in the future they will just heal up on their own. I don't think real tattoos are a good idea at 16, because most people(of all ages) who have them wish they didn't have them or wish they picked something else to have instead because they don't like the tattoo anymore. It costs alot to get rid of unwanted tattoos after they have been done. Henna tattoos are a great way in having a real looking tattoo that lasts quite a while and can be designed to how you want the tattoo. They are not permanent, but are easy to have put on and last quite a long time, they just fade off very slowly after a while. ~Joeys wife

Thank you very much for the advice I am going to consider the henna tattoos also becauseyou are right after a while I might wish I had something different on my body.

I would say choose exactly what you want and where you want it. If you still want the exact same thing in two years when you are eighteen, THEN get it done. I seriously think that you should think about a specific tattoo for at least a year before getting it done, just to be sure. Tattoo removal later in life is not a pretty option. As someone else said, you're still growing and it's a huge decision. Never ever get a tattoo on a whim. I got my back tattooed when I was eighteen and I'm starting to regret it because I want something else there now.

I got my first tatty at 14. My parents signed for it as well as long as it was simple and something that I could live with forever. That is the key something that means alot to you and the place to put it is up to you. But you are 16 and go with something like your ankle or something. Get something that you can hide if need be. I agree with your dad. (high five to him) Your mom has a point of having something that you like. I would go with a charm of some sort. A chinese logo (chinese sign for brave or friendship etc), butterflys, rose, 4 leaf clover.

I am 16 and my mother lets me do piercings and tattoos. but it depends where you want it. I want a tattoo on my hip of a blue rose and a bellybutton piercing. She lets me because it is not as dangerous as an eyebrow piercing or one on the tongue. Tell her it is safer if she lets you do it now because she has the power pick where you would have to do it. If you turn 18 you might just go anywhere to do it and that is not safe.

Personally, I see no problem with a 16 year old getting piercings that are reversible (ie no stretching of the ear lobes), but I would not recommend any 16yr old getting a tat. When you are 16 your are still finding yourself. So until you are sure of who you are, you shouldn't do anything that you can not reverse.

This is actually an ongoing topic in my house...My kids have wanted to get both tats and piercings for a good 5 yrs now which is funny since they are only 14 1/2 and almost 13 LOL....I've agreed to pay for and take them to get their first of each when they are 16 PROVIDED its been well thought out and has personal value meaning (for the tats I mean)...Not surprising, they both have been planning all the tats they want for well over a yr now LOL....they're both gonna need to get jobs ;-)

I got my first tattoo at 16 it was small and on my wrist but it meant something, I think as long as it has a good meaning and you honestly want it then it is okay. I waited 2 years before getting mine and realized I still wanted it. If you really want it then there should be no rush to do it.

I think its a bit too young, like Im sure that you have already been told a thousand times - its permanant...Maybe research it a bit more and find exactly what you want and where...It all sounds exciting to go and get one (is it just a phase ??) or do you really want one ?? Thats totally up to you but I would wait, theres no harm...

my 14 year old daughters bff wanted to get one but i talked her out of it because (the same advice i will give you) your body (skin) is still stretching and growing - just my take, ultimately its your body but if you still live w/ your parents, they rule...

A 16 year old shouldn't get a tattoo until they are 18. With Tattoos it is permant unless you get it removed. I think you may change your mind when you are older or might be judged because of your tattoo.

i got my first tattoo at 17 with my parents consent, my mum even came with me when i had it done. but the only reason they gave consent was if i had the tattoo design i wanted drawn on my body with henna first, so they could see what i wanted and where and if it would affect school or jobs etc, i had this done for several months and i still really loved the tattoo and it wasnt visible to anyone else unless i wore a strappy top as it was between my shoulder blades. sso i went ahead and had it done. i have since gone on to have more and am soon getting another, i have also never regretted getting them, but i would say think seriously about what you want and where you want it, think how it will look when you are 30, 40 years old etc, getting married etc

remember that other people judge us on what they see, which is a shame but thats life. choose a design or create one that has special meaning to you & your mum. Also remember your 16, by the time your 26 its going to fade( of course you can also have it touched up)
