Are all cats a specific breed? How do we find out what breed we have?

Do all domesticated cats belong to a specific breed? This might sound like a stupid question but I am new to the world of cats and I'm very curious about my new buddy. He's mostly white with a lot of big black spots on him. His tail is all black and most of his face is black.
Is there a way to find out what breed he is? Does it even matter if we know the breed of our cats or is it just something that's 'nice' to know?

I know there are a lot of different cat breeds just like different dog breeds but will admit I'm not all that familure with them - to me cats are cats and I love them no matter what.
I did years back have what I learned was a 'Russian Blue' - the cat, Duke, was solid grey but so grey he did look blue. I was told in Russia these cats were actually breed as watch cats and I would believe it. Duke was 'my cat' and no one elses - he actually attached strangers if they got too close to me.

I have heard of Russian Blue and have seen pictures of them. They are gorgeous. Since I got my cat whenever I tell anyone about him the first thing they ask is what "kind" is he...lol!!!

I also know Tiger cats, Calico, and Simese (?sp) - I also know 'barn cats' which I don't think is really a breed but what we always used for the cats that took care of mice in the barns.

Everyone thinks my cat is a russian blue.
He has all the features of one except Russian Blue's have yellow eyes and Reggie Cat has beautiful green eyes.
You can use that link to get ideas. But cats, like dogs, can be mixed breeds.

You are right, at first glance I would have taken yours for a Russian Blue but the eyes are a sure give-away.

All this talk about the color of eyes...lol...I had to go in the kitchen to check out Bigguys eyes. The black is so big that it was hard to tell...lol...but they look like a very very light yellow. Not the bright yellow that I've seen so often in cats and it looks sort of weird to me.

My cat is VERY Proper in the way he carries himself too. It's ridiculous. I'm positive he is not just a gray american shorthair, but haven't a clue what he is. I think his daddy was a blue and his momma musta been something that gave him green eyes. ha ha.

We have 2 domestic short hairs that are brother and sister. We adopted them from one of the no kill shelters. He is chocolate brown and she is jet black. The both have the bald patches in front of their ears, narrow snouts, and short of shortened faces so we know that they are part Siamese. Vanessa also has a similar body type, she is long and lean but much more muscular. She also has the "bat ears".
Sigil (the male) looks like the cat on this website...accept he is chocolate brown all over, he is missing the dark vision chemical in his eyes (which is another sign that they are Siamese) and he has yellow eyes.

I checked out a couple of sites and I think Bigguy is an American Shorthair. It's really hard to tell but that's what I'm thinking right now anyway.

I think if they do not have a specific breed like Siamese or Burmese, etc. they are classified as domestic long hair, domestic shorthair, etc. kind of like me, Heinz 57.

I think you cat would be referred to as an "American Domestic Short-Hair" or "Domestic Short-Hair" which, as far as I can tell, is sort of a catch-all for all the cats that don't have enough specific breed traits to assign them to a pure breed; sort of the "mutt" catagory for cats. There is also a "ADLH" for the long-haired cats with the same problem.

I don't think all cats are no, its like dogs they have certain breeds then they have a Mutt or a sooner as my dad used to say..I have a manx cat and the reason i know is because he was born without a tail, all he has back there is a hole Lol...I know if they have all colors like orange, grey and spashes of color they are calico..I really does not matter really unless you just want to know for your own benefit...My stray cat that i have is grey and white and i have no idea what kind she is...The reason i know that my other one is a manx is because i got it from my daughter and those she raises have no tail..Your cat could be a mixture but i think really they make the best pets, alot of those full blooded cats like siamese, and persian are mean cats, and i really don't like them much, but i just like a plain cat for me..I saw you cat on your pic and he is a very pretty cat....
