Are you concerned about high fructose corn syrup in your foods?

More and more is being researched and written about high fructose corn syrup. It is present in over half of our foods as it helps to maintain fresheness, extend shelf life, soften baked goods and for other reasons. Much is being written about the negative effects of our consuming too much of this sweet substance. Apparently it contributes to obesity, triglycerides and more. Are you becoming concerned?

yes I am becoming concerned over this and other foods our government must have interests in promoting. corn syrup is dangerous to the health in these massive quantities and I wouldn't doubt that it is a factor in the rise of diabetes in young persons - plus cane sugar tastes better anyhow! I am also concerned with the high incidence of sucralose being found in foods - even foods that are not considered diet. another concern of mine is the canola oil being pushed in so many products -

HFCS makes me crazy. It is everywhere! I challenge you to try to find hamburger or hotdog buns that don't include it. If you look really hard you can find bread without it and so if we do hot dogs, I put them in a slice of regular bread. And it's in juice and many other things that are labelled as natural and healthy. I guess natural can be stretched from the truth since it comes from corn, but it's just awful. I am amazed when I read the labels on food in the store. There are so many things that I used to buy without thinking about it that are permanently off of the list for my family. My husband and I are both very concerned about this and talk about it a lot. I didn't realize we had used this particular term so much until I was reading a label in a store and my son asked me if the food item in question had "the devil's juice" in it. Turns out it did, so we looked elsewhere. This is probably the most troubling to me, but processing of food in general is pretty scary. A package of shredded cheese got pushed back to the back of my fridge and I didn't find it until it had been in there for several months and it looked just the same. I looked at the package ingredients and I was stunned. I threw it away and now I am more careful with cheese purchases too. It can't be healthy for us to be ingesting all of this stuff designed to make things look more attractive and last longer in the grocery store!

Yes, I am really concerned about anything artificial in our foods. We stopped buying anything with high fructose corn syrup, hydrogenated oils and other un-pronouncable items in them. There are a lot of items you can buy without these horrible additives. I wish people would buy more of them to get the point to the companies making the cheap, bad foods.

I have been concerned, but much of what I eat is unsweetened. I did eliminate some things made with high fructose corn syrup. I do not drink much pop ( less than one a week. More like one 12-22 oz pop per two week period). I drink black coffee, do a lot of my baking from scratch. I look for things that have less sweetener of any type. I am hoping to eventually switch to mostly Stevia sweetened things, as I believe that it suppresses cravings. I try to find foods that have the rewest ingredients in them possible.

Yes Crazynurse, I have been for awhile, I learned with my middle son that by just adjusting such things are sodas, fruit juices that are sweetened, and keeping high fructose sugars at a minimum, I could maintain his weight without making him feel deprived of things other kids get to enjoy. (we have a fat gene in our family) It hides in things you would not think it would.

Oh I know, it is in almost everything! I have a daughter-in-law who is intolerant and cannot eat fructose. GEEEZE...try to find products without it?!?!

I try to always concern myself these days with the things that I am putting into my body. I have my share of unhealthy habits but I try very hard to make healthy choices whenever I can. I'm sure in moderation this stuff isn't so bad but it's in so many things, and no wonder it's making people obese... look at all the sugar we're consuming. Not to mention the fact that we don't eat enough of the right things, sit in front of computers all day and most of us don't get enough exercise. I work in a call center; to be perfectly honest most of the exercise I get in a typical day now comes from walking up flights of stairs to my desk instead of taking the elevator. That's kind of sad now that I think about it.
