MODERNIZATION .. a boon or a bane?

Mountains and Houses - Houses on a mountain or a mountain of houses? This is definitely a disaster waiting to happen. This is likely to occur if we don't stop from destroying mother nature.

A lot of people flock to the city like moths to the flame and because of this, high-rise buildings sprout like mushrooms everywhere. I thought that this only happens to the cities, but to my surprise, when I went to the province for a vacation, I saw that this once untouched place is being destroyed by the houses being built on the mountains to the point that I can't see any mountains anymore, but just buildings. We have to remember that one cannot build structures there without removing the trees and without the trees, the mountain is in danger of landslides and the lower places are in danger of flood. Can't we see that cements cannot hold mountains together like the roots of the trees do? I am not against modernization, but is there any other way we can do this without destroying our environment? I know that modernization does not come free or cheap, there is always a price to pay, but is an impending disaster an enough price to pay?

When I was a child walking home from school I noticed developers knocking down one house with a decent sized garden and then building a whole close of houses with tiny gardens. I used to play with my friends on a pretty hillside with grass and wild flowers growing. Sadly a developer got his hands on it and built a row of houses over looking the valley. I have moved to a different area now and the situation is the same. There was a small piece of land next to a footpath there. A developer built a three set of twelve apartments charging one hundred and thirty eight pounds for each one of them. I hate seeing this ugly block of flats. I would have been far happier to see three terraced houses, a semi detached house or just one detached house. But the developer wants as much money as possible so of course he will make more money out of selling twelve apartments than a few houses. I like the landscape to look unspoilt and love to see beaches with beach huts made from wood and thatch. I like to see mountains with picturesque looking Swiss chalet type houses. Removing trees from a stunning looking mountain landscape and putting buildings all over it is likely to turn the place into a concrete jungle. I wish that people would do more to look after the environment. It is silly to build in flood plains and put areas at risk of land slides.

A situation like the one you've experienced truly makes one sad and yes .... mad... because of some people who have no qualms in destroying our environment for the sake of making money out of it. It is no surprise if someday, we would not be able to see any greeneries at all. I believe that in every action, there is an opposite reaction... and we are the only ones who will be getting this "reaction" if people will continue desecrating Mother Nature.
