I was just thinking today how we call bunches of animals by different names.. a herd of cows, a flock of birds, a school of fish, a band of gorillas. Can you add more to this list? Anyone have any ideas how these naming conventions developed? Any linguists out here?

I know some, so brace yourself!;) Crash of elephants, a colony of ants, congregation of 'gators, a battery of barracudas, bed of oysters, wisdom of wombats, a shoal of bass, a cast of crabs and many more.. I'll share the floor with others, I'm not that selfish as you can see!;)

I'm not really sure where these terms or names came from, but maybe they have something to do with the animal behaviors and classifications. Most of them were named by environmentalists or conservationists, that might have first discovered or studied them..

I gave my niece a framed poster with a lot of these last year, but I am coming up short right now. I will give you a few, but I have to confess, I got it from an educational web site. I have been really fond of this one : and exaltation of larks. Lots of things come in mobs, kangaroos, for example. Certain rodents are called hoardes, gerbils and hamsters. I do not know how they come up with these names. Let's see what else people come up with.

These are really neat...I must remember the other discussion topics I came along with as a result of the New York state Thruway.
