Any one of us may have encountered a situation where we pass by a person along the road and asking for a free ride to a similar destination that were heading. This could be anybody, an unfamiliar face. Have you stopped to anyone and offered them the free ride? Or do you only choose whom to stop? Maybe perhaps a trusted face, or perhaps to women only cause you have the fear that they might have bad intentions?

I don't pick up any hitchhiker either since there's no way to tell by someone's appearance if they have any bad intentions or motives. I don't know if calling a cop to help the person would work, but I do remember one story about a female friend of mine in California, who was given a ride in a police car. No they didn't arrest her. They felt sorry for her when they saw her walking, so they drove her to her destination for free.

I feel bad when i just go by them but with today you never really know who you can trust which is sad. so I don't pick anyone up just to be safe.

Yes, Its basically the fear thing. I don't blame you for it most especially if you are in an unfamiliar territory. The thing is, as much as we wanted to help or assist, we have to consider our safety. This are most of the reasons why people often ignored hitchhikers. Fact is, you can never really tell who that hitcher might be.

Unfortunately in the world we live today, I will never offer a ride to a hitchiker. I would not put my life at risk, I have to live for my kids. Even if I saw a woman and a small child hitchiking I would want to pick them up, but you can't trust anyone these days.

You are right and I don't blame you for such decision. I know that each of us always has the heart to aid any person or help any person in need. Sad thing to note nowadays that there are a lot of bad people and usually they do not have respect for anyone. It is better to be safe than sorry.

your intentions may be good, and his/her may be not; you may pity him/her, but he/she may not pity you; you may be harmless, he/she may be not. there would always be the 50/50 probability of getting hurt. So why take it. In the first place why is she/he in the highway after all.

Generally you are correct. There is always a 50/50 probability of getting harmed or not. That is probably the reason why in some countries they considered it dangerous. But I do think that in our area its not that dangerous. Well, we will just have to be careful and be observant the moment we decide to let someone hitch a ride with us.
