Do you let movie critics influence what movies you see?

How do you chose what movies to see, and which ones to miss? Do you read reviews? Watch trailers on television? Do you go by friend's recommendations, or is there another reason why you see what you do? Maybe the genre, or the star? I like a certain genre and usually follow that patren. What about you?

Yes ofcourse other people opinion will influence my decision what movies i will see. Opinion it can be from friends, reviews on website, from star ratings, and sales.

That's much the same as me, but I never take any notice of how many stars a critic gives a movie. Too often I've seen ratings of 41/2 stars, but to me the movie wasn't good. And the reverse happens too.

I very very VERY rarely go by the critics reviews...I find that alot of the movies I've loved over the yrs have gotten bad or semi bad reviews by the critics..I care more for the non-mainstream type movies and the odd ones etc...I will however check out a trailer of a flick if a friend has recommended it, that doesnt mean that I'll necessarily watch it mind you but I'll find out more then decide from there...

Same here. I've enjoyed many movies that critics have canned, and some they have praised, I didn't like. After all, it's only their opinion.

i choose it on my own likes - and no one can change my opinion
i will hear their opinions, read and think.. but personally, if i really want that certain movie, no one can stop me to watch it.. its better if i watch it myself than believe all of the people's view.. we had our biases and conclusions, it might be beautiful to you and not for me.. its all up to the person's taste, his or her choice.. and it matters most if you, yourself does have the conclusion and the satisfaction yourself.

You're right, it all comes down to taste, and fortunately we all have different tastes.

I used to watch movies based on the critics' reviews and on my friends' opinions. But then I came across a particular movie (can't remember what it was now) that was a really good movie although critics and friends said it wasn't. So, now, if I see a trailer for something that peaks my interest, then I will see it without looking for the reviews or asking anyone else about it. Not everyone enjoys the same things in movies. Not everyone appreciates performances of actors and actresses on the same level. Since changing, there have been quite a few great movies that I would have missed out on had I listened to my friends and/or the critics!

Mirror image of my views. My tastes are different to those of my friends, and different people appreciate different aspects of a movie. You might like a particular directop that is not mainstream, and you will go to his movies and enjoy them. You can always catch up on those you missed by getting the DVD.

not really. even if i hear bad comments/reviews about a certain movie -- i still make sure i see it first hand and decide for myself. because i believe people have different tastes when it comes to movies.

I usually read reviews before I go and see a certain movie.. but sometimes even if a movie has bad reviews but I am still curious enough to see it I go ahead and watch that movie..

I think it would be wrong to not see a movie purely based on a review. After all, we all have different tastes.

Well, I mostly watch movies in theater because of the issues they treat - and because of a certain actor/actress. I watch ALL movies starring Leonardo DiCaprio, no matter what they are about. And I watch everything Star Trek, since I'm a Trekkie for over 30 years. I don't care for critics at all.

I have favorite actors I follow also, and the genre isn't that important. I have no time for critics.

I choose a movie by the writing or the story. If the commerical grabs my attention, then I go see it.Years ago , I would see Siskel and Ebert"s show. They would discuss a film and I would get a better feel what a film was about but I would make up my mind.I have never gone to see a film Only because a critic said it was good.I have tried films that friends have suggested.I have my favorite stars but if they are in a film that I know isn't for me, I won't see the film.My favorite genre is suspense/mystery.

Suspense and mystery! Yes! They're the two words I look for when I'm looking for a movie to see.

erm.. of course it's very important to listen to others critic about a movie isn't it? i used to listen to my friends opinion.. you know why? because there's once.. i watch a movie.. the bad thing is.. my friends and i didn't know what movie was that.. we just give it a try as we thought it sounds scary.. it's suppose to be a horror movie.. but it ended with boringness.. we laugh all the way.. because it really nothing.. not even feeling scared.. from that day onwards, i never go to watch any movie unless it is recommended by friends.. or someone who has the same taste like me.. haha .. thanks =)

If you laughed all the way through it, you at least must hsve enjoyed it, even for the wrong reason. I wouldn't let one instance stop me watching exactly what I want.

Well as for me I am movie crazy but I never let anyone ot anhting influence what I watch. People's tastes are all different nd what you dont like I might indeed like. Take for instance the Wild Hogs movie - reviewers said it was crap and for me it was a good laugh. I think you should just go by what you like.

It's a very good thing that we all have individual tastes. I also have enjoyed movies critics have canned.

If there's a movie I kind of want to see, I'll check out reviews to see if it's worth seeing, but if theres a movie I just really want to see, I'll just go see it.

So sometimes critics stop you from seeing a movie you're slightly interested in. That in itself is interesting.

Hell no. I watch what I want to watch. If I really wanted to see a movie, reviews by critics only make me want to watch it more. Sometimes, friend's recommendations though work, but never critic reviews. It never sways me to watch or not a certain movie.

To the question do you let movie critics influence what movies you see, no way i want to find out for myself what a movie is like cause other peoples opinions are not my opinions i want to see for myself

Being a movie buff for a long time I can guess how a movie would be by the producer ,director and actors. And I am not influenced by reviews alone. But I don't mind reading them.It helps at times and interesting too.

At some point, yes I do. I am my best movie critic, so I have to see what I want to see anyway. Most of the time I want to see movie that one of my friends was recommending....

You're in the minority here polchicago. Most posters don't let reviews sway their decision to see a movie.

Too often I totally disagree with the critics so I don't let them influence me too much. Apparently they're looking for something different in a movie than I am because some of the movies they really trash I end up loving! I can usually tell by the trailers on TV if I'm going to like a movie, although I have been disappointed already when it seems they put all the good scenes in the trailer and the rest is boring. I also like certain genres and there are quite a few good actors that I enjoy seeing so if the two go together, I'm there! Or, I should say, I'll be seeing the movie eventually because I don't go to the theaters very often these days with the high prices. I wait for the DVD or for it to come on HBO. Annie

I'm similar to you. Genre and actors are usually my first consideration, and personally I don't give a damn what critics think.
