Well, no kids, but my Manx cat Nova eats books - dictionaries, novels, magazines and chews anything he decides he wants - boxes, my cell phone case, the antenna on the house phone, my crocs, you name it!

hi think that is bad I had a dachound puppy who found out if he chewed on the electic cord he would get a charge out of it and he did I caught him and immediately pulled the cord out of the wall socket but I caught him deliberately doing the same thing the next time i was vacumning. We soon put a stop to that but the puppy did not seem hurt although his tail was straight out behind him while he chewed and got charged. we took him to our vet and he checked out okay.

What's wrong with eating books?!!!!! Apparently, I used to do that when I was little. I always hated reading! Cardboard books are full of fibre! The kid wasn't teething was she? Maybe books taste nice. Lots of kids do it.

I just wanted to add. Kids eat all sorts of things. I've known kids who eat babywipes, lots of kids like to suck wet flannels and eat paper. It's all perfectly normal. I was quite fortunate with my kids. One liked to suck his silky bits on his blankets (he called them fiddly bits) and my toddler has always preferred fingers!

Good Morning sunshine :)))) You neglect to say how old the child is. Kids eat some pretty strange things. there is a condition called Pica that can be bizarre to say the least. But I think this is just a child being a child. Perhaps Babysitter you could feed her? She might not be so hungry for cardboard books! "looking around for someone to stand behind!"

Morning angel :) She's not hungry, she eats the books all the time, no matter if she's just eaten or not!! I guess its not just books either, its everything that she puts into her mouth, its just the books are the only thing that get ruined because she does it.. Is pica that disease where people feel the need to keep eating and eating and eating ? or maybe being obsessed with shoving things in their faces ? lol. She is 19 months. My daughter is 18 months and pretty much over the putting crap in her mouth. I can give her smaller toys and she knows not to put them in her mouth, but i gotta clean them all up when the 19 month comes over cause EVERTHINg goes into her mouth!!

Pica is a condition that causes people to eat strange things. have you ever heard of someone pulling their own hair out and eating it? I read a case report not long ago about a woman that ate 3 rolls of TP a day and had from late childhood. She was in her 20's when the report was written. Its a compulsive craving. Science is trying to determine if there is a genetic marker, or if indeed it has it is psychologically based. Don't worry about your little charge she will grow out of mouthing too. Keep the books put away!

How old is she? If shes young its a natural thing for kids to put things in there mouth and eat them. They have to try EVERYTHING weather its good or bad. I remember my son would take the ash tray and eat the butts! EWWW!!! He only did it twice and I put them way up out of his reach. If shes older she might just be doing it for attention. If she dosent get enough attention at home she will do things to make you pay attention to her. There could also be another reason. Maybe she isnt getting enough in her diet and is tryng to make up for it by eating whatever she can. I hope that makes sence. Talk to the mother about it and see if she does this often. If she does she should take her to the doctor. And Congrats on the new baby coming!

Is she 3 or under? if so it is perfectly normal. Kids of those ages put everything in their mouths. If not, it is time someone teach her some respect for books.

They say pets and children will eat the strangest things and one theory is that there is something lacking in their diet... Perhaps she needs more fiber, lol!

Babysitting can be a challenge at the best of times. I know this firsthand, as I've babysat a little girl from the time she was eight months old. She's now six and a half. I commend you for doing this, as it isn't easy caring for someone else's child (I find). How old is she? My own daughter never chewed books, but 'this little girl I watch,' did. It was the board books too, and I'd find soggy pieces of cardboard around, and would have to fish them out of her mouth. She was always chewing something, even the paper off crayons etc., and this was when she was beyond the toddler years. She was quite the handful. Happily, she no longer does this, and we have a very good relationship these days.

Oh good god yes. My son loves eating his books. So i went out and bought all hard cover books so now he chews more then he did before and if he can get the cardboard off the book he will chew it and chew it untill he gets busted.. I can no longer let him have books when he goes to bed or i will wake up to half of old mc donald

lol! Well. i'm glad my kid doesn't eat them. Although she started taking notes from the one i babysit and we had to tell her tonight to keep her book out of her mouth! i'd hate to have to hide her books away from her, she loves looking at them and having them read to her sooo much!

yup kids chew on their books regularly. that's why they have made plastic rubber paged books for kids below a certain age. some kids put everything they can in their mouths. they'd eat up the paper pages if it weren't cardboard. they are just exploring. get books that have waterproof pages that do not disintegrate when they come into contact with a kids' mouth. : )

LOL you just need to remember that all kids are different lol. Now I have 2 kids and my first was a book eater and ripper and still can be if I don't remind him not to do it. and my Daughter that is 18 months now has never been that way she just loves books and is always pretending to read them. It is very normal it is a way for kids to learn texture and the little girl that is doing this probably does it with alot of different things. Try not to get too upset just put the books away when shes there and you could try getting plastic books that way she can ruin yours or ask her mother to bring her books with her so that she has her pwn to chew on LOL Good Luck

Emma hasnt tried to eat her books yet. She does eat paper (tissue paper, napkins and her baby wipes) every time she gets the chance. She has these books with the flaps on them. The peek a boo flaps. She tears the flaps off so its not a peek a boo book no more. I guess thats better than eating them though right?

LOL are you calm now?? ^__^;; i think even if you are not pregnant that would still be annoying. especially if you can't stop that kid from chewing all those pages! i would be pissed too when i'm taking care of a kid like that. maybe that kid is hungry for something differnent. or maybe her teeth is itching and she wants the cardboard to scratch them for he. LOL i haven't encountered a kid like that but my friend once told me that when he was in gradeschool, he and his friends would eat paper just because. yeah! they got no reason for it. can you believe that! very odd. i just told him that that's what geeks do. LOL if she eats a book again just give her water. LOL

lol.Give her something to wash the book down with you mean ? lol. By the liquidity (that's my new made up word for the day) on the book, I dont think she needed ANYTHING to wash it down lol. I dunno about itchy teeth! have your teeth ever been itchy ? *giggleS* i have yet to experience that IF indeed it can happen! And yes i am very calm now, both kids are tucked in and napping, i hope for at least another half an hour ;)

lol yeah. to wash down the book. ^__^;; i only heard itchy teeth from old people around here. they would say that when babies are munching on anything, their teeth are itchy. ^__^;; maybe that was their gums and not their teeth. LOL

How old is this child? She could be teething or even have a tooth ache. It may soothe her gums. Give her a piece of licorice or something to chew on that doesn't dissolve quickly and remember - she's just a child. Stay calm and patient - they respond better to calmness and since you are the adult - you could take them away - but children have no alterior motive- just very basic reasoning. Find out what makes her want to chew so much; and meanwhile replace the books with something edible.

Well how old is the kid? When my daughter was cutting teeth she did the same thing. For about a year. 18 months to almost 2 and a 1/2. Sounds normal. Gross yes, but normal. You did the right thing putting the books where they cannot be reached.
