How much has your town changed lately?

I was just standing out in the parking lot on my break at work. I work right in the heart of town. As I stood there I watched a drug deal go down across the street. Then I watched as two innocent looking tourists approached the dealer and asked for directions. The dealer gave them directions and off they went. He then sat down on the wall and took out his small binoculars and started watching up and down the street. Meanwhile in the background progress is turning an old historic building into condominiums that only the rich can afford. I grew up in this city and each year it changes for the worse. Is it progress or am I just getting old and nostalgic for the city I once new. How about where you live, has progress destroyed a beautiful place or is your town still a great place to live?

Our town has changed a lot and is currently changing quite a bit on it's own. It's sad really. I miss the small town that actually looked like a small town. I miss not having developments all over the place, and huge buildings in random places. I guess progress is nice, and it does help the economy, but progress for the sake of progress is pointless.

Yes my town has changed alot, well not the town that I am in now but the town that I came from.
There is always building going on and they are either chopping down more nature to build shopping malls and such such...
I think that this is terrible... But what can we do?!

We have the agricultural land reserve here on the island to protect the farmland but...each year the rules change and land is rezoned and before you know it we will have none of the lush land that is so fertile and we will have progress...I guess there really isn't much we can do but grin and bare it.

Well, I grew up in different countries..so I can't say much on that front.
But the place where I live now has changed drastically in the past 4 years. There's so much development happening here....lots of schools and apartments have come up in this area since we moved in. The green seems to be receding with all the concret work around. Earlier we could see planes take off and land but now can't view that with an apartment right in front of us. A mall has come up in the past few months.
I'm sure by the time, my kids are grown, this would be a city and very different from how we see it now.

Lately? gosh, Austin has changed so radically in the 50+ years I've lived here.
There's apartments on the land I used to ride horses on in the '60's & '70's.
They are talking about commuter trains (a waste of time & money in my opinion) here. Not that commuter trains are bad, just that they want to use existing track & the tracks don't go near the jobs downtown - we are talking over a MILE in most cases, so then you have to have buses to carry the commuters just to the areas where the jobs are.
Heck, what used to be long distance phone calls are now local. The county seats of neighboring counties have local numbers because so many of their residents work in Austin.
Even some of our formally bedroom communities are now butted up to town with really no open land between. And the ones there are still some space, probably won't be in 20 years.

well, my town has changed a lot but i just say that i'm thankful that it's mostly for the better. there are more buildings and more projects underway but it hasn't changed the place i know too much in its essence. the conservation authority has done a good job in preserving shophouses and historical buildings and my little neighbourhood is still crime free and quiet most of the time. there are little improvements like covered walkways being put in, and little outdoor gyms being built so it's all good.

I know what you mean. When I grew up here we could wander anywhere and our parents didn't need to worry too much about us. My best friend now has a kid the same age as we were when we started hanging out and she sure doesn't feel comfortable letting her kid roam the streets like we used to do. Sometimes progress really sucks.

Hi. I think my town and region has tripled in population since I move here. Housing prices are so outrageous, too. When I moved here, there was lots of open space and even horses only a couple of miles away. Now, it's all built up. Traffic and parking has gotten terrible. Some crimes have gotten better, though, but most others are the same.

Well, there are two towns I notice changed. One is my hometown. My mother's house is surrounded by one family houses now converted to apartments. The backyards have been blacktopped for parking. The main street downtown was closed in an attempt to attract more pedestrian traffic and that failed miserably and it is now open to traffic again
.
In the large city I live in now (seven months), I see more and more development going on around me. Housing for sure, but more and more shopping centers. The older ones are sitting empty. We have seen this going on in every city we have lived in - we comment on it every time we see a new center going up.
I think progress is destroying the cities - the wonderful historic buildings and the more mundane that could have just been remodelled a little.

I can totally relate to the houses being converted and the lawn becoming parking spots. We have a lack of rental housing in town so it seems everyone is putting in basement suites to help pay the mortgage. As for the malls, we have the same thing here. They just let the old ones go to ruin and build new and improved malls with super stores in them. I prefer the old malls personally but I guess we can't stop progress.

City where i live has changed quite much in the last years.Criminality has raised a bit, and it isnt really safe to go out alone at night, there are thieves and bad guys out. They wouldnt hurt you, but they would steal your money and cellphone.
Other than that, i am sad to see the traffic get worse by the day.Parking isnt easy to find, and even if you go somewhere near, it will take you much time to reach your destination.
Luckily, there are things that change to better too. However, as a city, i really doubt if its a great place to live, especially for children.

The town i live has changed a lot.
It was pollution free now its reverse.
Cool breeze now full of petrol smell.
More people its crowded a lot.
Land prices have increased.
More changes longing to be the same it was but changes happen it's LIFE!
