Is it a ground-breaking invention and what was the best thing BEFORE sliced bread?

I asked Mr Croc what was the best thing before sliced bread and he said the wheel, but it didn't taste very nice.

They do still make them but smaller with less filling.

Wagon Wheels - Burton's Jammie Wagon Wheels - NOT the same thing at all!
Wagon Wheels were delicious! I don't even know if they make them any more. Several years ago I found some in a shop but they didn't seem the same - more like go-cart wheels, I thought.

http://www.okpatents.com/phosita/archives/2006/10/who_invented_sliced_bread.html Well, that's a link to a website I found on the subject, apparantly it was invented by an American. :) The best thing before 'sliced bread' was 'bread'

People baked their own bread and sliced it by hand. With the dawn of commercially produced bread, someone got the bright idea that if they were going to bake and package the bread, why not go ahead and slice it, too. I'm glad they did. Although I like fresh, homemade bread, cutting it is always a pain. Thank you to whoever had the foresight to do something about it. It would be hard saying what was the best thing before. Everything we have in our world that is manmade was invented by someone.

Yes! The best thing SINCE sliced bread was the Bread Machine! (Although it's not difficult to make by hand!)

I wonder why you said Paris? I would have thought it was an Englishman but apparently it was an American. The French bread is shaped differently and doesn't usually need slicing.

It was invented at the beginning of the era when everyone wanted things to be easier and what's easier than a presliced loaf of bread? A nice hot loaf of bread ready to be buttered and gobbled up.
