I asked Mr Croc what was the best thing before sliced bread and he said the wheel, but it didn't taste very nice.

Well, that's a link to a website I found on the subject, apparantly it was invented by an American. :)

People baked their own bread and sliced it by hand. With the dawn of commercially produced bread, someone got the bright idea that if they were going to bake and package the bread, why not go ahead and slice it, too. I'm glad they did. Although I like fresh, homemade bread, cutting it is always a pain. Thank you to whoever had the foresight to do something about it.
It would be hard saying what was the best thing before. Everything we have in our world that is manmade was invented by someone.

It was invented at the beginning of the era when everyone wanted things to be easier and what's easier than a presliced loaf of bread?
A nice hot loaf of bread ready to be buttered and gobbled up.
