Do you have one in your home? Have you ever had to use one? Have you been trained to use one? I can say "Yes" to all three of these. I did use one to put out a kitchen fire once. Tell me about your experiences.

You can get a small fire extinguisher for about $10, perfect for the kitchen. Everyone should have one.

I got to practice putting out diesel and gasoline fires in a burn pan when I was a bus driver. I think this discussion is making me want to check up on my fire extinguishers and make sure they are in good shape.

Hey Doll,I have about 10 of them..I keep them tested and in each room. When I was 16 our house caught fire through an electrical problem. I still remember the terror of wondering if we were all out and being worried about Ma because she was ill.. I have to know I'm as safe as I can be for my family and pets.

Your darn right I have a fire extinguisher, I also make sure I have working smoke alarms. I used to work for a cleaning and restorating company. We cleaned up after fires and smoke damage. I make sure the kids have fire extinguishers and smoke alarms too. I hope I never have to use it, but its nice to have just in case.

Unfortunately, we don't have one here. But I do know how to use it, since I also took some fire fighting class back then. It's a part of my training, together with First Aid. We were taught how to use it, it's different types and where to specifically use such. Since there are different types of fire extinguishers, which are used for different types like electrical and chemical fires.

Some insurance companies will give you a deduction for having them. That was why I got my first one.

Yes, yes, and yes! Shortly after we had some workplace training in the specification and use of fire extinguishers, I made it a point to go out and buy the correct kind for use in our home. My reasoning was that if I did it while the information was still fresh in my mind, we would do it right, and then just replace them with the same kind periodically. We had removed the oven and range from our primary home, as I prefer the safer induction cooktop and a convection/MW combo along with various stand alone appliances for cooking. But our vacation home still had the old-fashioned kind of range cooktop, and so I made doubly sure to have a fire extinguisher there, as ranges are notorious for being where home fires start. It was a good thing, too, because one night I smelled smoke in the hallway and went to the kitchen. There was nothing on the range, but smoke was coming out of the hole in the kitchen sink. It was the dishwasher which had caught on fire, from a leak in the seal causing water to come into contact with the power source. Fortunately I had the right kind of fire extinquisher on hand and knew how to use it, as in seconds the kitchen was engulfed in smoke. We were successfully in putting the fire out without much damage, although of course the dishwaher itself looked like a crispy critter. It was a good think we were home when that happened and now we never ever leave home with the dishwasher running.

That is something that I am trying to convince my husband of. I do not like to go up to bed with appliances running either.

We do have a fire extinguisher. I have had to use one a long time ago. The curtains in my kitchen caught fire, can't remember how or why. But, I do remember grabbing the fire extinguisher and put the flames out. The kids were freaked out about it. My heart was going a bit faster too. Glad that we had the fire extinguisher to douse the flames. I don't know what would have happened if we didn't have it.

We do have an extinguisher in our house (although I need to get it tested) and I have been trained to use one (it was a requirement of my employment when I worked at a retirement community). But, I have never had to use one to put a "real" fire out - just the training one at work. Hopefully I'll never need it, but it's nice to know how to work it.

I say yes to two out of three of your questions. Coming from a Firebrigade family, I was brought up with the use of fire extinguishers. I have one in my own home in the kitchen, the most likely place for a house fire to start. I know how to use it. I have never had to use a fire extinguisher in an incident. Once I was in a home where a fire started on someones stove. I threw a teatowel over ot to smother the flames. In one of my last years of teaching, my class were having a party. One mum had supplied a pizza that I was heating up in the unit oven. The inside of the oven caught fire & smoke poured out everywhere. I couldn't find the extinguisher, but the some detectors went off. The whole unit was evacuated & the fire brigade arrived. It turned out that the parent has put this pizza on a plastic tray.

I do have one in my home, in the kitchen, hanging on the wall - I used to have one in the cars but for some reason we no longer do. I have, thankfully, never had an occassion to use one. - do they have to be refilled or recharged or anything due to inactivity? I wonder how many years they are viable for, if they expire or anything like that.

They should have a gauge on them stating whether or not they are still effective,or need recharged. If they are disposable they should still have a way of reading if they are out of pressure. In commercial use they are to be checked monthly.

I have a fire extinguisher in my home, actually two if you count storage. Fortunately, I had never had the opportunity to use one. However, I have taken some classes, two summers ago on how to use a fire extinguisher. It was a little complicated for me getting used to it, but I feel that I am ready now to use one should the time come. I wonder how it would feel like putting out a small kitchen fire or a situation of a similar nature. -Feel Free to Disagree!

I have a fire extinguisher at home. As my dad is afraid of any accidents, so this is why we bought one at home. However, I think it has already passed its valid date. And also actually I don't really know how to use it. Hopefully I will never need to use it. I love China

Pull the pin,, squeeze the handle, and aim the foam or powder at the base of the fire. Sweep back and forth. Make sure you use the right chemicals for the type of fire that you have, like never use water on electrical or grease fires. You could do it if it meant keeping your loved ones safe.

Sadly, I do not have a fire extinguisher in my home. I should get one for the kitchen though. I know that it would even save me a few dollars each month on my house insurance if I had one, but I never seem to think to buy one. I have never been in a situation where an extinguisher was needed from an uncontrolled fire, but I have had the opportunity to use one at an overnight camp I worked at. We had the local volunteer fire department come in, and they set some controlled fires in a large metal box on the dirt. I was one of the lucky staff who were chosen to dress up in the fireman's suit apparel, and do the whole fire extinguisher thing... get low, pull the pin, aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, and then squeeze the handle to let out the stuff to put out the fire.

They are pretty inexpensive at Wal Mart. Having deadbolt locks, smoke detectors and fire extinguishers does lower your homeowners insurance, and it provides a little extra security for you.

My wife and I did caretaking of apartment complexes for many years. Man did I use them during those days. It's unreal how ignornat some people are. I actually had to put out a fire from a woman taking a pan from the oven using a dishtowel which she also placed in the oven after she set the pan on top. Unreal huh? Also some people leave potholders on the stovetop right against the pilot lights of gas stoves. yes I have 4 in my home at this time. 3 regular and one designated for kitchen fires. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I do. I have 3 in my house. When I was moving some things last week, I knock one off, on top of my foot and couldn't walk on it. After the second hour or so it eased off enough to limp around, but I couldn't wear my shoes. I had to wear my sons crocs! LOL I had to work the next morning for a few hours until someone could get there. I couldn't hardly bear any weight on it for 4 days. I still can see where the bruises were! I have never used a fire extinguisher, but my mother did. I showed my DD how to get it from the hanger, and pull the pin. A few days later that lesson came in VERY handy when my mothers pants caught fire while burning some trash and brush. My then 5 yr old daughter got the extinguisher and took it to my mother. She saved her life!

Sadly we do not have a fire extingquisher in our home at the present time. We used to have a fire extinquisher but it lost its pressure or whatever and we have never replaced it. I have had to demonstrate proper use of a fire extinquisher as a part of my job so I do know how to use one. I remember as a young girl we had a pan of hot grease to catch fire in teh kitchen. My mom paniced and ran and my dad was trying to snuff it out with a dishcloth and was yelling at me to get the baking soda. He was able to extinquish it before it did much more than singe the cabinet above the stove. You would think after seeing that I would have an extinquisher. I'll put that on my list of 'to-do's' for the next week! Thanks for the healthy kick in the butt!

One of the first things we bought after moving in to our new home was a few fire extinguishers. I have a small kitchen one and a larger one by the bedrooms. Thankfully, I have never had to use one, but I have been trained in the proper ways to do so... everybody should know how in case of emergencies.

ALthough I never had to use it, I do have one and I do know how to use it. I think it's just one more safety think that can be helpful. Even if we never use it, it is still a good idea to have one:)
