I couldn't believe I got Bigguy to follow me into the living room but that's not the best part! I patted the couch a couple of times and kept saying "come up with mama"...he put a paw up! So, I picked him up and he actually sat next to me on the couch for 15 minutes! Did I actually time it? You bet I did!!! He let me pat him and I talked to him softly the whole time. He actually seemed like he was comfortable. Ok, I realize this is no "ground shaking" discussion but at least it's not comparing coke to pepsi right? lol....

lol...he seems to need to know where he is allowed and where he isn't. I know he would like to get into my bathroom but he's not allowed in there because of the rugs and his shedding.

Oh, I am very amazed and felt so happy when he came up on the couch. He looked at me as if to say 'is it ok?'....since this apartment is new to him and so small I don't think he knows where he can and can't go. I keep my bedroom door closed because I'm afraid he'll go under my bed the way he did in the beginning and not come out again...but I'm thinking of giving it a try in a day or two to see what happens.

Oh, but it is important, because we care about you, and we are site full of animal lovers, as well. He will come around and by summer you two will have a real routine and be two really comfortable old pals. I have a cat that likes to sit in or on rocking chairs and swings. That came as quite a shock. You will be able to win him over. He will trust you.

Thank you for the caring. It's nice to have a place to come to talk about everyday things in my life and get some good advice. I'm definitely feeling that he trusts me and now I think he even likes me! We've come a long way already.

Well i think this is pretty ground shaking for bigguy especially since he has spent 6 months in a basement..He is actually getting use to you,he is warming up to you, reaching out for your friendship..This is a very good sign....Cats do not warm up to people as quick as dogs do, but when they love you,you could not have a better pet....They are shy and aloft, but when he reached out his paw, thats very good....I was just thinking to about his past and his owners,he may have been passed around some and maybe he is like a child that has been passed around, they feel like it is not going to last..When he is convinced that you are going to keep him ,then he will feel secure...This little stray cat that came here to us,she was shy at first, now that he is sure of us, he acts like he owns the place...Haha

Well i am not a cat, haha but i do try to put myself in their place..You see he was abandoned and he knows this,he was just left, and he has a trust issue, he does not know if he will be yours forever or if he might be roaming the streets again..I am so sure that animals have feeling and i feel that they think too...Now that you have him and he is sure he is yours forever he will let down the barriers and open up to you....I can just imagine what it was like for him to roam the streets not knowing where his next meal would come from..He is so lucky to have you,he has probably not seen very much kindness in his life...

Bigguy is a neutered male and I've heard that that makes a big difference in his behaviour. Actually before living in the basement for 6 months he had been roaming the streets for about a year because his original owners just abandoned him when they moved. He has had a bad life.

I'm glad that you can share with us. we are all wanting to know how things go with Bigboy as we were there with you when you started with him. This is wonderful. You are making head way with him and that is good news. Before you know it he will be rubbing your legs when you get up to do something. With animals as with kids trust takes time. So now you know you are doing the right thing with Bigboy.

I told you it takes time and now he is getting there and it will get better as the time goes on
He has made the first move and hardest one
He had to see if he can trust you and he is slowly now learning that you will not hurt him
It is a long Procedure but worth it at the end

Congrats, Ctry!!!
From some of your other threads, it sounds as though you have exhibited the patience of Job, trying to help your new kitty warm up to his new home.
I imagine that those 15 minutes with the Bigguy were thrilling for you! Hopefully, this portends a warm and pleasantly interactive relationship to come. I know things have been tough for you lately, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that your Bigguy will become affectionate and always ready to greet you with a hearty purrrrrr!

It has taken a lot of patience but it is going to take even more to end up with the companion that I'm looking for. He's really starting to come around and I think by the summer he will be all that I want him to be.

sOUNDS LIKE he is finally breaking into being around you. It takes
time for an animal to get used to a new owner and be sociable. Good work by the way. Buster was the same way when we first got him from
our daughter. he basically stayed to himself for the first few days.

Since he's a neutered male around 3 years old and has been living in a basement for the past 6 months I knew he wouldn't trust me immediately but day by day he's learning to trust me.

Thanks! He's been letting me pat him all along but to sit next to me on the couch was huge. Actually to be in the living room for more than 2 minutes was even huger!

That's great! See, he just needed to start feeling a little more at home before he warmed up to you. Before you know it, he will be bugging the crap out of you. He will be wanting to lay on the keyboard while you are typing and standing in front of the monitor when you are trying to read. That's what my cats do. LOL
