My sons school is officially crazy!

This morning my son went to school like always. His school starts at 8:15am. At 8:30am is school calls to say that they are letting out at 9:15am due to weather conditions. The boy was at school for 15 MINUTES before they decided to cancel school. There is by the way not a flake of snow coming down. They let school out early about a month ago for weather and we had no snow and we ended up not getting any at all that week. Does this seem crazy to anyone else?

My school liked sending us to school in terrible weather and then deciding after a few bus loads of kids arrived that the weather was just too bad and that they were going to send everyone home again. It usually meant kids being at school for only a few minutes and a lot of parents not even venturing out with their kids because the weather was too terrible.

If the school children are not taken in school bus and if the parents cannot be informed in advance, it is very difficult if there is a sudden change in the schedule. But sometimes it is inevitable like you said the climatic conditions, sometimes the civil disturbance in the entire area, sometimes due to sudden deatho of a important leader of the area or a nationa leader. In such circumstances, the bigger children (boys and girls) manage to reach home. THe little ones should be taken care by the concerned teacher and after making proper arrangements to make them reach home, they can have a sigh.

I would say about 95% of the kids in my sons school ride the bus. We live in a rural area. The only kids that do not ride the bus get dropped off by a parent.

Trust me, it's not just your son's school that's crazy! Around here every school district within our one local TV station's viewing area was either canceled or had a delay because of the bitter cold weather. The only one that didn't was the one my grandkids go to and that made me a bit mad since there are lots of young kids that have a long walk to the bus stop and sometimes they have to wait a good bit. The next day it was just as cold with some snow and sleet so once again they were all delayed or closed - this time ours included. The next day it was almost as cold and the roads were twice as bad and guess what - no cancellations or delays. To top off the week, yesterday they had a 2 hour delay and got out about an hour later. But they got credit for a whole week. They're all totally nuts! Annie

It seems that a lot of schools do that. My daughter is in the 4th grade in a southern Kentucky school and has to get on the bus at 6:30 in the morning. The other day she was ON THE BUS when the school board decided to close schools. They had to turn around and bring her right back home,,, she didn't even make it to the school. But, sometimes what you have to remember is that even if it isn't doing anything at your home doesn't mean that it isn't doing anything elsewhere in the county. Also, they closed schools early yesterday and it wasnt doing anything at my house but 20 miles away where the school is, it was snowing and the roads were covered. I do think that it is crazy for schools to close on a 'maybe' or an 'it MIGHT snow' but I would rather my children be safe and stay home because of that 'maybe' than to go to school and take the chance on the roads actually being bad somewhere else in the county. I was in a school bus accident as a child due to bad weather and bad road conditions and that is not something that I want my children to have to go through.

That seems absolutely ridiculous and as a mum myself, I would be charging down to the school asking what in the heck they think they are doing. Yeah I can understand if they have been warned by the Met office or it's obvious from looking out a window that the weather is too horrendous to teach but to do it on a maybe? thats just plain stupid. Also, if they were going to do that, why bother even getting the kids to school? they should have all the parents phone numbers so surely they could have called. Failing that they could have at least stuck a notice up on the main doors so that people would just turn around. I think you should complain to them because your sons education is suffering through their idiocy. That's just my thought though lol

Well, it did start sleeting a few hours after he got home from school. He could have stayed at school a few more hours and actually gotten credit for the day though.

Well, I guess that is somewhat ridiculous since there was no problem at all. However, there is just the possibility that the school was just making precautions in so far as the weather is concern and that is something that we have to give credit to. But you can never really predict the weather, in fact in our country which basically has a poor set up, on weather forecasting, it really gives us something to be angry to. Sometimes they predict here that there is a typhoon coming so lower levels (elementary class) will be advised to go home only to have a very sunny weather. Sometimes they predict that the typhoon will hit at this time, yet it will come or has passed by already. However, I still believe that preparing for the worst is better than no preparation at all.

Our school district here seems to be a bit wacko too lately. When we had 4 inches of snow last month there was a snow day, and when we had 16 inches last Wednesday there wasn't a snow day! Go figure. Then on Thursday they started school two hours later and made it a half day. I was at school for two hours total that day, and my middle school brother was at school for a total of 1 hour. Crazy. I've heard along with the economy, the US educational system is sinking fast. I must agree it looks that way.

lol...my son had a day off on Monday due to 'turmoil in the area'. Fortunately we got an SMS on Sunday but we couldn't figure what the turmoil was all about...and surprisingly none of the other schools in the same are seemed to bother about the safety of the kids and the so-called 'turmoil'! Well, the good part is that my son got to take off on a trip with his father (which he hasn't done in a while). I was quite surprised at my son's school because they do not close school for flimsy reasons when all the other schools in the area do.

What the heck? YES, that is crazy! They couldn't have decided this two hours earlier in time to get a hold of the parents before they dropped off their kids? I wonder if they were able to get a hold of all the parents. I bet there were like five kids left who had to wait hours before someone was able to come get them.

The school that my step children go to does the same thing at times. At the start of the school year they did this for about a week or two straight. Their reasoning was that the weather was too hot for the children to be in school all day. The wouldn't tell the parents ahead of time that the children would be getting out early because they would have to make the decision the same day so that the children wouldn't have to make up the missed days at the end of the school year. They have only done it once for the winter months though. It can be a pain but I can understand their reasoning.

yes it does. where I live the schools decide to shut down long before the busses start rolling. Once in school, If the weather turns bad, they may let out the middle school or Highschool but not the elementary because of parents working etc.

I have the same problems with my children's school district too. They don't cancel school until it is so late. My kids had no school today yet at least we knew it before they got to school. We get several snow days here. In fact my kids only went to school 6 days out of the last 15 days. Then people ask me "what do I do all day now that the kids are all in school?" HA! They are still here!!!!!

definitely crazy. two things, they should have informed the parents earlier so they won't go the trouble of sending their kids to school and then after few minutes, go back again to pick them up. second thing is -- did they choose the right profession?? it seems they are tired of teaching. a little snow (or none at all for that matter) then they suspend classes right away? jeez... ridiculous.

Not sure where you live or the weather on the ground... but we have to have like totally unable to drive conditions for a snow/weather day... days when we were determined because of ice they would at least have a two hour delay.. hahah nope!! sometimes I really wonder about school districts! lol

i wonder where did they ever get the weather updates and be so certain about things? something is wrong with the school, if they want to cancel classes, they should have done it in one day advance, not on the spot where the children gather thinking there is class while they doubt if they should go home.. thats very inconvenient, they are in tender years, not old adults who are used to sudden errands and changes right away in a second.. they should be question whether they want to give quality education for the right pay or just want to have a school for fun and predictions.. i think they are not serious about the children's condition and the parents who will worry as well.. they are like the weather, a school who is unpredictable as well.. making their own forecast illegally. take care^_^

Wow, that is odd. It really amazes me sometimes how they would let school out early here for bad thunderstorms. The kids are better off at school and not the roads for some of that weather.

thats the nice thing about our school system, they do not let kids early unless it is widely publized (ie a note coming home etc) while they do have early dismissal for other reasons (teacher training) they dont let kids go home early due to weather.

That does sound rather odd to me as well. I could see canceling the school day, or having it end early, if the bad weather had already started, but that is about it. Today there is a weather advisory in my area (I am in London, Ontario), but the kids are all still in school. The windchill is at around -30 C, and all that means for the school, is that the kids stay IN the school for their nutritional breaks. We did have ONE day when school was canceled. That was just over a year ago, in December 2006. We got hammered with over 3 feet of snow overnight, and the entire city basically shut down. The kids had a ball playing in all the snow that day. They still talk about it, hoping they will get another snow day soon. lol.

That's a nice thing to hear. Along with studies, they care for your child's health. No one can predict the weather.
