Margerine VS Butter.

Do you use margerine or do you still use butter? If I am baking I still use butter because it makes the baked goods taste better, in my view. But other than baking I use margerine for everything else. I think they say that margerine has less calories, or that is what they used to say. Is this still true? Does margerine have less calories? Oh yah, and I still use butter on my popcorn. I like my popcorn made on the stove and I like to use real butter for it, not much, but some. So which do you use and which do you think is healthier?

Butter all the way. I NEVER use margerine. When I was about 17 or 18, I came home from the grocery store and unloaded the groceries from the trunk of my car. I didn't notice until the next day that the margarine had fallen out of the bag and was still in the trunk. I live in Florida and it was summer time so, you could only imagine how hot it was in that trunk! Anyway, I put the tub in the fridge and it went right back to solid and was good as new. My question was, if it could take all that heat and still be just fine, how could it be good for me? Well, the next month I went to visit my Grampa in Mississippi. I asked him how he had lived for so long. He said that it was because he never ate anything that was processed. I make my butter from scratch, just like he does. I make just about everything from scratch. My Grampa turned 93 on January 18th of this year and he is still as healthy as a horse and still works his farm everyday.

Wow, good for your grandpa. Thanks for the chuckle, about the margerine in your trunk. This has happened to me too.

I'm pretty sure the calories in both butter and margarine are pretty much the same. I personally prefer margarine because I think it tastes better than butter. It just has a richer and more smoother taste in my opinion. And healthwise, I believe butter is more healthier than margarine. Both butter and margarine has lots of calories from their fat content. I can't really say any of them is good for your health though, I'm afraid. However, if we were to narrow it down, butter would be slightly better than margarine. Margarine is made from a process called hydrogenation, and it contributes to it having transfat, which is bad for your health. On the other hand, butter is bad as well, since it is consists of saturated fats, which is bad for your heart. So you can't really say butter is better! Both aren't what I call nutritional. So don't consume it too much all the time. A little goes a long way, I say. P.S. Try to look for non-hydrogenated margarine, I think for those who like margarine, this is a better choice than regular margarine.

my family don't bake a lot at home but we do have butter and margarine. mostly margarine with sugar mixed. we love making it as sandwich spread, it's yummy. butters are really better when you bake cakes, they taste good than a margarine. margarine has this stronger smell and taste unlike butter..

I use butter for baking, but because of financial restraints we have used margarine for spreads, but I have started to stock up on butter on sale and I have made whipped butter. Margarine and butter have the same calories unless it is the soft margarine, but then they add salt to it so that negates any health benefits and there is the trans fat issue, the only one that does not have it supposedly is the soft margarine. I do think that butter is healthier, but you have to be careful of the calories. However I am almost 65 and I am afraid I cannot reverse all the bad effects.

margarine is probably healthier but i love butter so for potatoes, toast etc, i do eat butter. for cooking i use margarine cuz it is cheaper. i don't like the taste of margarine at all and would go without popcorn, toast, potatoes etc if that was all we had in the house.

I use both. I prefer butter, but when we run out of butter or when money is tight I will buy margarine. I usually keep a stick of butter in a dish on the counter so it will be softened for things like toast and bagels. I also keep some in the fridge for use with other things. I never leave margarine sitting out though.

I think it depends on the margarine as to how many calories it has. I don't use margarine because it's just a lump of fat with artificial color and artificial flavor to make it look good. Butter at least has a few vitamins and minerals in it.

I don't use either! I will have dry bread, for some reason I have never worked out why, but margerine and butter makes me billious! I can't eat it, it's ok if it's in cakes etc, but if it's eaten as it is on bread for example then it makes me sick, I hate the taste, it's always been that way even as a child and I've never been able to eat it. Which is good in a way because it's quite high in calories and I don't miss it. Although I do substitute it for cheese instead

I use both but for baking i prefer to use butter as butter will makes my baking turn out to be great. Butter makes my cookies and cakes smell so nice and taste more buttery. For margarine, i use it for cooking some of the recipes for rice. Yeah margarine have less calories since it is derived from plants unlike butter is from animal. I like butter more but margarine is more healthy.

We have butter in the house but do not use it all that much. We don't use margerine because a) it is full of all kinds of oils that are bad for you and b) is it one molecule away from being plastic.
