Well, yes we can finally sleep trough the night without having bailey meowing all night and we're all very happy about it. But we're trying to understand what's up with fluffy our female spayed cat. She was always great with bailey ever since he came to live with us. Well it took her about a week to get used to him the first time, but then after that they have been the best friends in the world. However when bailey came from the vet fluffy started to act strange. She would hiss at him when he passed and poor bailey was not feeling 100% so he would go and hide. She didn't really fight with him, just hiss, but I wonder why. Is it possible that he smells differently now? Or that she was sensing the he was weaker? Or ...? I don't know . It is now 4 days ever since he was done and she is finally starting to seem more at ease with him now, but she still doesn't seem to feel at ease with him as she used to. Today was the first time that I found them sleeping close to each other ever since he came back, but then when she woke up she was a bit silly with him again. Does any of you witnessed something like this after one of the cats was neutered? I keep wondering why it happened.

I have had similar things happen. I believe she can probably smell the anesthesia, my mom always said it took a while to wear off of your system (people or cats) If you have a grooming comb or anything, it might help to brush them both with the same comb, so that then they will smell alike.

I"m going to try the grooming thing. Even though it's getting better I'm sure it won't hurt and I like the idea :) I'll tell you how it works :)

It does make sense that if the last time she smell that scent it was when she was "fixed" she would associate that with something to fear. Great idea!

Maybe she is just a little miffed that he left her all of a sudden and then came back acting lukewarm. His feeling bad and hiding from her might be understandable to us, but who knows what is going through her feline mind? But seriously, it does sound like they will both be back to normal soon. Keep us posted!

Yes, she seems to be slowly coming back to the way she used to be with him and maybe you're right, maybe she was mad that he went for a ride and she didn't :) Or maybe the smell from all the other cats there or something. I don't know, but it got me puzzled ever since I got him back. He is more himself today. He hasn't been hiding in the closet and instead he has been laying down beside me. I"m sure things will be completely back to normal soon but I will write any changes in here :)

I didn't see part one of this discussion. But I have an idea fairly sure it is the smell. Nothing we can smell, but cats can. Many years ago I had two cats that were bonded. They would cuddle up together & lick each other. Then one was bitten by a snake. As it took us 48 hours to find him, he was critical by then. The vet put him in a humidcrib & he had lots of antivenene. He was saved, but we noticed that he smelt differently, before we got him to the vet & after. The other cat noticed this, & was very vary. It took a long time for them to be the same to each other as they were before. I suspect your other cat has smelt or sensed something different. Cats dont like change. They will probably come good again, but I wonder if you were able to bathe Baily if this would help get rid of the smell that Fluffy doesn't like?

I would say her reaction to him is due to the way he smells. If Bailey had surgery of any kind, he is going to have a lingering odor of antispetic on him, and also he will have picked up scents from the veterinary office. I'm sure it will calm back down when Fluffy realizes it's the same ole Bailey. I have not seen this in cats, but I have seen it happen in dogs. Give it time, it will pass.

It makes sense. I was thinking somewhere along those lines. I was thinking about all the animals in the vet clinic and that the smell might somehow be on bailey and that's what she might be picking on. I think it is probably going away since she is starting to mellow out a bit with him again.
