I normally do not get political but this man has been in power almost as long as I have lived on the face of this earth. They say his brother raul is likely to take over since fidel is too sick, he has already made great reforms in the country selling farms back to ordinary people so they can have a business, releasing 80 per cent of political prisoners etc. I was wondering, I know fidel is 81 years old and sick, but I was wondering does anyone think somebody tried to assassinate him?

I haven't seen anything abut an assassination attempt, I imagine that it is possible. I think that he has just go to ill to exercise any real executive judgements in Cuba. I would like to think that things might get a bit easier for the Cubans now, but if Raul takes over I suspect that we will see more of the same, notwithstanding some of the things that he is supposed to have done in the last couple of years. Funny when you think about it. Cuba is not a very big place, but has caused the West so many "moments" in the past 50 years.

oh I know it has not been publicized as an assassination attempt but he has had many over the years, we know the usa has tried several times, the most famous was the bay of pigs, but that kind of information can be hush hush this time, that is why I just can't help but wonder.

I've just watched the BBC National News here and there was no suggestion about assassination. But who knows. No doubt all will be revealed in time.

Maybe some fanatic will try to take revenge for past wrongs…we don’t know. But his going is certainly the end of an era. It would definitely mean more instability in the American continent, at least for some years now. Raul may not be able to handle situations with such an iron hand as Fidel did and some change may be beneficial for the people after all. But this end has suddenly brought to my mind thoughts on Che…what would Che have done and said had he been alive today? How much of their dreams have been fulfilled and how many shattered?

I seen bits and pieces of this on the internet today. I'm not really up to date on Fidel Castro or exactly what he has done or exactly what he stands for. I am glad to see someone else take over and do something for the country though. I think he is being replaced because of his age and they need some changes for the country but I am not really sure about the assassination thing.

It really wouldn't surprise me if someone did try and assassinate him. I think he has made many enemies over the years. It should be interesting to see how the politics in Cuba play out over the next few years and weather the fences will be mended with the USA. I kind of hope Raul doesn't take over and they get some fresh faces on the political scene.
