I cooked a nice stir fry last night for supper with A LOT of veggies, but i had no sauce, so i attempted to just make my own type of mishy mashy taste with soy sauce, garlic, and natural flavour of the many fresh veggies i added. I had a shower before bed, and have washed my hands many times this morning due to diaper changing two kids, and i can STILL smell the garlic on my hands!! Any remedies to combat this ? I know it happens with onions too but i think this time the smell of the garlic is overpowering the smell of the onions!!

As odd as it sounds, I heard that the way to get the smell off of your hands, is to rub your fingers on a metal knife, like a butter knife. Obviously, do not hold it in a way that you will cut yourself.. that would be a BAD thing. I don't work with fresh garlic anymore, so I haven't had the opportunity to try this for myself. But I do have a friend from school who told me that this worked for her.

There's a couple of things I use that instantly help this problem.. Handmade soapmakers usually make a soap called kitchen soap and they all make it a little different..but generally it does the trick with lemon and coffee grounds of all things---this takes it away immediately. I also use at times Bath and Body Works Kitchen spice anti bac soap- that's good stuff too that usually works for me.

Try rubbing your hands with the juice of a lime....usually works for me when I handle fish.

Not often...but I use garlic everyday! Lots of it! Lime juice seems to work for me...even the rind of a lemon is good...just rub it over your hands and then wash with soap or plain water.

hehe I love the first response and comments to it, superglue. I got a good chuckle out of reading those first ones and that's what mylot is all about, having fun. Have you tried to soak your hands in white vinegar for about two minutes and then wash them with soap and water. Or try salt, I heard that works for onion smell, so it make work for garlic too.

Ah smelly garlic hands uh! This might sound silly but after cutting garlic and you have that smell on your hands you do have a gadget in your kitchen that will help, the stainless steel taps on your sink, just rub your hands on the steel and the smell will go. You can buy stailess steel "poles" for this purpose but why spend money when you have the solution in front of you. So dont rub your hands under the tap merely all over them lol. It works :)

With you, there! And that should be most of the world, considering what a healthful plant it is. All metals oxidize in a different way, just a coupla more asides; 1. Tape a penny on a wasp sting, the sting is gone fast, and the copper destroys the stinger, so swelling minimal. (course, this doesn't include your throat.) 2. From my grandmother, rub stys with a gold ring, that is being worn.

You should get mixture of vinegar and honey and dip your hand in it for a little while and then wash them with flavored soap. This may help you to remove the smell of garlic and onion.

i had a lot of stir fry my wife made the other night and she used a lot of cabbage and the next day i went for the YMCA and swimming and water walking and water aerobics? well exercise in the water..but i had a lot of GAS and that was ok in the water..but it lasted all day and most of the night and my wife was silent bud deadly too..but i was not so silent...but she is a good egg and said that is good for you to let the air out sometimes? and also it is a good colon cleaner..better then "colon blow" they invented a new onion that does not hurt your eyes and i think it does not have the odor? well, it supposed to not burn when you chop it up.. but garlic is something i take in a supplement as it fights infections and does a lot of good for Blood pressure? well..it can smell over powering at times but i think that is the other people problem as a fox cannot smell his own lair? or such as this.. eat the veggies as God has given them to us..Did ADAM and EVE care before they ate the forbidden fruit? no..they all went naked and did not have to worry about dragon breath or dentist..or obgyn..as all nature smells good ..except a skunk?

LOL I have the same problem wiht cabbage, as well as califlower and brocolli. I love garlic, but it really does leave a strong smell! And you are TOO right about the skunk! Ohh and some snakes have the same defense mechinism, they stink when they get scared! I learned that from snake hunting in my childhool. It was a little grey snake with an orange ring around its neck! I tried bathing it in the puddle, but it just kept stinking and stinking everytime i would pick it up! lol.

Garlic - Uhhhh the smell
I looked every where and I'm not getting any real solutions however there was this one that says use a piece of stainless steel and rub your hands on it and it will get rid of the smell. I got a good laugh from that one till I got this answer. Getting rid of garlic smell from hands. Simply wash some silver cutleries with soap and water like you're washing regular dishes. I have tried this and it works great. Just make sure you wash silver utensils to get rid of the garlic/onion smell. So maybe there is something logistic about the first answer? I don't know but here's the latter site. http://forum.indya.com/showthread.php?p=513761#post513761 Another site says to use toothpaste and rub on hands for 30 - 60 seconds and the smell will be gone. http://www.ehow.com/how_2127468_remove-smell-garlic-hands.html One more because one of these HAS to work! lol While many of us enjoy garlic added to our food, we’re not all universally fond of the smell that tends to persistently cling to our fingers afterwards. Perhaps if you’re Buffy the Vampire Slayer, keeping that garlic smell on the fingers is good for business. For the standard population, getting the garlic smell off your fingers is a desirable goal. There are many suggestions for getting rid of that garlic smell. Some people suggest soaking the hands in lemon juice or vinegar for about five minutes and then washing with warm water and soap. In all cases, if you’ve gotten garlic under your fingernails, you’ll have to use a good nailbrush or the tines of a fork too or you won’t get the garlic smell off your fingers. Another suggested method for getting rid of that garlic smell is to rub your hands with table salt, and then again, washing thoroughly with soap and water. This too may work, but salt, and lemon for that matter, will not be a good idea if you have small cuts on your hands. The old expression “rubbing salt into your wounds" applies. Some people prefer to avoid the issue completely by using gloves when they prepare garlic. This can work well if you’re using rubber or latex gloves. Don’t get the ones with powder on them, as you may get a little latex in your food. Also avoid this method for keeping the garlic smell off your fingers if you are preparing food for anyone with latex allergies. Probably the most common suggestion for getting the garlic smell off your fingers is to rub your hands against stainless steel after chopping garlic. While there are metal bars that you can purchase for this express purpose, a stainless steel knife, spoon, or sink will do! It's said that the molecules in stainless steel bond with the molecules of garlic left on your hands, effectively removing the garlic smell off your fingers. Many suggests the stainless steel method works equally well with onions, and some suggest that if you hold a stainless steel spoon in your mouth while chopping onions, your eyes won’t get weepy. Of course the spoon may obscure your vision, and you might get a cut from a knife if you can’t see what you’re chopping. Here's the site to this one. http://www.wisegeek.com/how-can-i-get-that-garlic-smell-off-my-fingers-after-i-chop-garlic.htm Good luck!!

thanks for the great research! I guess that the best solution so far is the stainless steel, I've never even heard of this before today, i sure am glad i asked! I was thinking about using gloves next time but a lot of the times my nails end up poking through the gloves and not only is it harder to chop things up with gloves on, i get garlic or onion juice on my fingers anyways! *smiles*

I cook with garlic almost everyday...so I know a few tricks to getting the smell out hahaha First of all, I often use my "Miracle Blender" to chop the garlic, hands free, my hands don't even touch the garlic. If I do chop the garlic by hand here are some tips to get the smell out: 1. take citrus peel, oranges, grapefruit, etc, break open the rind and rub it all over your hands. 2. rub your hands with a stainless steal utensil like a spoon 3. rub hands with salt or baking soda Also, to get a nice sauce for stir fry when you don't have much on hand...make sure to season the veggies with salt right when you put them in the pan, it draws out the liquids in the veggies, which does two things...gives you a nice veggie sauce AND helps coat the pan so you don't need as much extra virgin olive oil. I add onions, garlic and soya to mine as well for a nice tasting sauce. A few drops of hot sauce will give it a nice kick, or chilli pepper flakes (but remember, the longer you cook pepper flakes the hotter they get!) hope that helps!

That's a real problem hun. I think, rubbing lemon with the rind on works wonders. You can even use any other citrus fruits as substitutes. Make sure to moisturise your hand afterwards. You take care sissy.

I am told that rubbing them on a lemon works as well rubbing them on stainless steel like your pots and pans if they are not aluminum. an excellent sauce is garlic, soy, brownsugar, ginger - etc for a nice terriaki sensation.
