Because it was full of highly toxic fuel and could have landed in a populated area, and to a cynic proving to china that america can do what ever thay do - yet another space race! And dont forget $40 - $60 billion is peanuts to the US compared to what youve done to the world economy ie the credit crunch lol

I don't know what the answer is....but I think the Pentagon went with the decision of scaring the public with the Hydrazine, rather than tell the truth of the matter. 10 days before the shoot-down, the first news was that the satellite carried lots of sensitive data, e.g; nuclear & spyware, and they were afraid that if it crashed in Iran, Pakistan,North Korea, etc., they would be privvy to the U.S.'s knowledge. When that didn't go over big with the population at large, they opted for the Hydrazine ploy, so that we would all get on board, and support the decision, as we are all now becoming seriously environmentally concerned. And it seemed like a great election platform. Sorry, I am sorry I am so distrustful of media and government. Soon as the govt. slipped up & admitted that they were spying on the rest of the world, they had to c.y.a. with something that we all could relate too! Yes, I did see the falling debris...on fire!

Yes, because that satellite carried a fuel tank with Hydrazine. If that satellite had fallen into American soil, it would have been a potentially harmful to the residents in the area which it landed. It would have leaked toxic gas if it has survived re-entry into the Earth's aptmosphere. The intent was to preserve human life although there have been some questions raised as to whether this was indeed what the Pentagon actually set out to do. The operation raised Chinese concerns that the United States was trying to test an anti-satellite weapon amid rising global tensions about the militarization of space and they have asked Washington to provide more information and warn of potential international consequences.

Aren't scientist supposed to make hazard free satellites which are safe and do not destruct the earth at all costs.Whats the sense of attaining in formation at the expense of ones harm.Do you agree.
