my wonderful man is going to buy me wonderful new living room furniture. we picked out this great black set and i am so exciting. we are going today to pick out paint for the living room as well. I don't want to go dark on the walls because the living set is black, and we don't want white.
So what color that's not dark would you put against a black living set?

Well, in that case you can take a look at sail white. It is not pure white. When painted on, it has a pale tint of yellow. Almost like the color of milk. Really beautiful. Makes the whole rooms look brighter as well.
If you are not into white, then I would suggest using two colors in the room.
Depending on where you want to place your black furniture pieces, you can paint the whole room with one base pastel color of your choice. Then one wall where you want to accentuate the furniture set to a darker tone or color that you like.
If you use the sail white like I recommended, then you would have a whole range of darker colors to choose from.
Unless I know how exactly your furniture pieces look like, and the layout of the living room, where the lighting come from... etc etc, then I would be able to share with you better on how to select the colors.
Alternatively, you can check out my blog at http://gnmrenovation.blogspot.com/2006/08/paints-what-to-choose-how-to-choose.html
My final living room color is the first picture in the sample.
Hope it helps.

Actually if you are looking at making a small room look bigger, a bright color base should be the way to go.
But too much white is boring. So color it by making one wall a bold darker shade. Adds a really good mood to the room you are decorating. And if you have the time to experiment, work with stencils and a glaze to add some nice patterns to the wall with the darker color. When you switch on the lights, the reflection of the glazed over pattern will give the feeling of wall paper, adding another layer of coziness and warmth when you step into the room.

I agree, I would stay away from dark paint especially if the room is small. I would go with a light neutral. Maybe a taupe or tan, something that is off-white enough. What other colors do you have in the rest of your house?
Enjoy your new furniture!

As some one who LOVES black furniture I am jealous! Perosnally the things I have that would accent my living room are greens. I would probably do a sage green. If my husband would agree I may even do red. I love all colors and I think you could do just about any color that went with your accessories. Good luck!

Yes...I think something soft would go great with black. I have my house done in blue. My furniture is a blue as well as my walls and my sugs. My carpet is gray and my curtains have a blue and gray and tan mixed in them.

What a wondeful man you have there Momma!
What you should do is log onto HGTV.com or the tv channel and look at all the different decorating ideas they have on there. I'm sure they have a section on wall colors or something or rather to suit any type of furniture style and color. Have a real good look around the site as there is alot to take in.
I was thinking maybe a red (not sure what shade) and or green might be nice - or even a soft creamy color or very light shade of brown/tan color.

At first I was not going to reply to this one because most people's taste is not like mine. But my sister and her husband did their living room in a nice peach color and it looks so nice. I believe that it will really work with the black, since you do not want a dark color.

perhaps a maroon or something within the same color scheme. You might be able to go with a hunter green as well. If you have a small living room, you don't want to go with a dark color or it will just make the room look smaller.
