A Very Bad Habit!!!

When riding the bus home from therapy on Monday, I realized that I had fallen back into a really bad habit. Since I was a teenager, I have been riding the bus long distances alone. I love it so much. I like to sit in a seat next to the window with my headphones on, look at the scenery and completely zone out.
I could ride the bus next to a person for hours and not be able to recall anything about that person. I do not know why I feel so safe on such a public vehicle. This is the same place that I first communicated with the man who robbed me at gunpoint in 2001.
So Monday, I had taken along the book that I am reading. I knew that it would not be possible for me to miss my stop because they always call it faithfully. I get off directly across the street for a community college. So I allowed myself to really relax and get into the book.
The next thing I knew, I looked up and to the side and sitting next to me was a guy who lives in my building. He rarely ever talks, so he had not spoke when getting on. But, he had to walk right in front of me in oder to sit down next to me. When I realized who he was, it startled me because I knew at that point that I had slipped back into my dangerous pattern.
Even when I am walking down the street, I do not notice the people around me. I am focused on getting where I am going and that is it. I will really have to work on paying attention to my surroundings again.

Even though I do listen to music on the bus, I stil pay attention to my surroundings especially whoever sits next to me, whos in front of me and whos sitting behind me, weird but I just do. I actually can't read books on the bus as it kinda makes me sick.
Sorry to hear about the robbery Rozie, that must of been very scarey :(:(

I learnt a new word today, agoraphobic - I had to look that up :)

It is good and very important to be alert at all times in public. I guess the ride is just so relaxing to me. Every time something happens to remind me of the robbery, I become afraid all over again. But, just like when it happened, I have the strength to work through it. I just do not want to get to the point where I am hyper-vigilant, paranoid, or worst, agoraphobic. That would totally not work for me.

Alright now Rozie. I don't want to lose a friend especially like this!! Omg girl!! Get yourself together now and start paying attention! No seriously, I'd hate to see such a sweet gal get hurt but then again, you have to enjoy life too so don't beat yourself up too much over it but do please be more careful.

It just really got my attention and shook me up a little. I do not venture out much as it is. But I plan to start getting out more in the very near future, so I will get in the habit of being more careful. Tahnk you, your response was very sweet.

I may seem like I'm in my own little world, but I try to pay attention to my surroundings. But, I don't really react to anything unless I feel like it's a threat. Sometimes, though, I will talk to people, but not all the time.

Rozie you are like so many people from big cities so do not beat yourself up. I am from a small city and some times I will smile and speak to someone around me and sometimes I will not.
I think you are right you need to pay attention your what is going on around you. Be careful I do not want anything happening to my friend.

I too am able to zone out completely, or so it would seem, but there is always part of me on alert for dangers, even when i am asleep.
My eyes are not the best these days (just really need new glasses!) so I rely on my ears and gut instincts more than ever. Not had any bad things happen yet! Oh, but missed my bus stop plenty of times! lol.

Yup, that is a bad habit. You always need to know what's going on around you, even when you are in a familar area. Although I can be guilty of it too. I think that I've been pretty lucky. Sorry to hear about your scary robbery.
