Tax Preparation Shock - Follow Up

The is a follow up to my discussion regarding the free e-filing from the IRS website.http://www.mylot.com/w/discussions/1417661.aspx I only submitted my online preparation a week ago and the refund in is my checking account already!!! To say the least I am really surprised at how quickly it was processed as I thought that perhaps with using the free filing system mine might have gone to the end of the line. So I will definitely never pay a professional (rip off) such as H&R Block to do them ever again.

This will be the third year we have purchased software, but we will also look at the free site. How about your state taxes? How do you file them?

I don't know about all states but here in Georgia they are not free. So I did pay a couple of dollars for it but only because I was getting a small refund which more than covered what it cost to e-file so made it worthwhile. Next year I will not bother to e-file them I will just fill out the forms and snail mail them.

Although I missed your tax discussion, I couldn't help but reply to this one anyway. Tax preparation in Australia is a rip off. I pay $160 to get my tax completed. For many years I prepared my own tax, but it became too complicated with my investments & owning a second house. I have no choice but to pay someone now. Hubby gets his tx done too, so the whole thing costs us over $300. I wish he would do his own tax, as it is straight forward with not much in the way of deductions. If I could do mine online free, I would attempt it, if it wasn't for the complications in mine. I sit there & watch the tax accountant do my tax, & it is all computerised now & very easy for her. Last time she spent a while telling me all about the affair her married boss was having wity the secretary.

H&R Block wanted to charge $270.00 for just doing my simple return. What really got me was everything she asked me she just read it from the computer. It did not require any expertise on her part. If you dont use the free one you can buy software (I believe Turbo Tax is very good) which walks you through it and double checks so that you don't miss anything. That would cost a lot less than $300.00.

Absolutely....I always have my refund within ten days, that is with direct deposit. I would never pay a service again to do taxes....it is easy enough to do yourself.
