I haven't made up my mind yet. It's 12.30am here and I can't decide if it should be the start of my fasting. Initially, I had 3 days in mind. Yes, I meant to fast for 3 consecutive days but I would drink plain water (no juice). But for first-timers, I think going without food for 3 days is overestimating myself. And so, I have in mind to fast for just 24 hours and see how it goes. I expect myself to be hungry and hopefully the fasting will help me detox. It would be a bonus if I receive spiritual enlightenment. I was rummaging through books in the library earlier to see what I could find on detox. Most have elaborate recipes and even the simple ones seem too much trouble. That is why I decided that instead of going for a juice detox diet (which is one step "up" from no food at all), I will go totally without food or juice at all. I am keeping water though... I doubt I can last the day if I have neither food or water. The internet offers little information on fasting - which caught me by surprise. One of my concerns is my blood sugar level. I am going ahead with the presumption that fasting is beneficial for my body - not detrimental. Has anyone of you tried fasting? Should I not eat for 24 hours? Do you have any experience or advice to share? Like I said, I still can't decide if I am already into the 24h fasting or not.

I'm sorry but that's just not healthy at all. I think that's the lazy way to loose weight. Your body needs food to help it to function and fasting can lead to all sorts of eating disorders and personally, I think it's a bad idea and completely stupid, sorry!

I don't think he is doing it lose weight, but maybe I am wrong? Usually fasting is not to lose weight. The difference in that and an eating disorder is that there is a set time to not eat. A lot of people who fast, also drink juice. Fasting is very common for people involved in religion, although I don't think that is why he is doing it either, lol.

Well, I will never see the point in starving ones self for days on end. There's a reason God created us with an appetite. Eat dude, eat.....LOL....

In my religion we fast for half a day without food or water. We eat in the morning before the sun rises and can eat again after it sets. What i try to do is minimize my work load and do only things that are necessary.Just decrease the energy output because you are not going to eat anything hence no energy.Since you will be drinking water you won't get dehydrated but water does not give you energy.Try fasting for 24 hours but if you feel like you are going to faint or experience dizziness please eat something and refrain from doing any fasting until your body can handle it.

I did fast for 24 hours once, as a teen. Just make sure, and I'm sure you know this, if you start to feel queasy or weak, like serious feelings of it, reach for some juice! : ) I was reading a non fiction book last month, and the woman decided to do a detox. She did the recommended thing from a book of hers, which was drinking lemonade mixed with cayenne pepper. Oh she detoxed, and fast!

LOL, I'm quite surprised at the protest of fasting. Doctors have told me to fast 24 hours prior to a test they were going to do. That has happened to me quite often.

Another pro factor is that I would be fasting at home - so I guess there is no "danger" of me collapsing outside. Of course the flip side also mean that if anything happens, no one will know right away lol.:P

I was raised roman catholic and every good friday we were forced to fast the entire day. I remember being a child and telling my grandmother that she was trying to starve me and that the kids in Ethiopia were better fed then me, but 20 years later I suffered no long term effects of having to fast one day a year for 24 hours. Just a resentment for the catholic religion. I would say 24 hours is a good time table to start with but if you begin to get dizzy or light headed you may have to give in and eat a candy bar or drink a glass of Orange juice.

The internet probably doesn't offer much because it's absolutely dangerous and can lead many to eating disorders. I think people who fast don't use reason at all...

Well, for one I have Generalized Anxiety and Panic disorder and when I was having a really bad case of my panic disorder, I didn't have an appetite and I could barely eat a thing. I was very weak and it took it's toll on my body and mind. For weeks afterwards my appetite was crap because my body was used to not eating. There is a reason we feel hunger. Our body needs certain nutrients. We need food. It's completely selfish to give up food and I find it to be a little superficial as well... It just does not make any sense to starve yourself. I don't see any point to it. Why the heck would anyone willingly want to starve themselves? There's people in other countries who would die for the food that paople give up when they fast. It just seems unreasonable and immature to me....

I had to fast for 24 hours for an operation I had once, I could drink water nothing more, I had to keep my mind fully occupied otherwise I'd think about food and my poor rumbling stomach. I hated it, it's gruelling and the clock starts to drag, and time lasts forever, it worst when you have someone living with you or around you who's eating, the smell alone drives you insane! I had to get out in the end, trouble is when you start walking, your exercising and your body craves more food for the calories you burn off, you can't win. I don't envy you my friend!

I feel like going ahead with it to be honest. When I was planning this earlier in the day, I was starving when it got near to dinner time - I was thinking if I can manage it the "next day" if I need to.

I don't think it's really necessary to do it for health reasons. I used to do a "semi-fast" because I had a certain health problem where I would get headaches in the morning if I didn't do it. I would fast for only 14 hours. I only did this until I found out the reason why I was getting headaches and I don't fast anymore. I just make sure I don't eat any sodium or sugar late in the day, if I can help it. I haven't gone for more than a day or so unless I was really sick. If you have already started to do it, make sure you drink plenty of water and take vitamins, otherwise, you might be doing more damage than good.

I have never tried fasting. I wonder why do you want to have a fasting. Are there any special reasons? I think three days fasting is a very long time and I am afraid it's not good for health. I think skipping one meal is already enough. Perhaps I don't feel good when I am hungry.

Aicaramba! I have never fasted for even half a day, unless I've been very ill or in the hospital and restricted for a period of time. If most people (unless it is part of the society or religion), parents or friends would call people anorexic. I know you are not, but hope you take darn good care of yourself. And even the thought of 3 days, that would be dangerous. Even though I had the flu gosh darn bad, with no appetite, I still made sure I ate some in small portions. But I understand that many religions or countries may do so (like the article about the student staying in Egypt for a year). Best Wishes

THe longest I ever fasted was 4 days. It actually is healthy and good detox if you do it right. What you must do is plan in detail how you will come off it before you start, so you don't binge, or come off it with the wrong kinds of foods. You need to come off a fast with 100% fruit juice, preferably fresh squeezed if you can. Frozen stuff is probably not the best, and absolutely NO added sugar. What you do when you fast is you rest your digestive system while your body cleans itself. You have to "wake up" your digestive system slowly to retain any lasting benefits of fasting. Fruits juices, followed by raw fruits and vegetables, followed by whole grains, dairy and finally meat. If you jump right in to a "good meal" you will surprise your system and will retain water, create fat cells very rapidly and generally not feel so good, you'll feel sluggish. i have successfully come off fasts the right way and it feels really good, really rejuvenating. Good luck, please keep plan carefully and create a few "safety nets" for the coming off part, it's hard and takes a lot of will power, but it's worth it. BTW, most likely, if you are ever going to feel cruddy, it's going to be the morning of day 3. That's the peak of the initial rapid detox and when your body is changing gears. You might feel nauseous and a little shaky. If you do, sit down with a cup of water and sip slowly and ride it out. You should be fine in about 15-20 minutes, half hour tops.

I ended up with mashing my food. The blender I used was not the one that makes juice. So I just mashed it and drink it with some water. I think it is still more digestible than solid fruits.

I am not sure if my blender is working. After the 24 hours, I am thinking of eating fruits. Would that be ok? I am doing just 1 since this is my first time. Not even sure if I can make it! :P

Fruits are OK, juice is better, at least for a few hours. You're probably fine with fruits since you're only going 24 hrs, that's really not long in the scope of fasting as done by some people. Just remember that it's mostly mental.

I haven't done this but I have looked into it for quite some time and after I am moved into my home I will be doing one. A few responses you have received gave some very good info on how to do a fast. The fast I was considering for health reason is known as The Master Cleanse- pm me if you cannot find the directions on how to do it. You can also detox toxins and the like simply by eating nothing but fresh veggies and fruit for a few days. Fasting for spiritual reasons can be a fast from anything- for me, fasting from my daily latte for a week would send me into prayers just as deep as would going without food for 24 hours. For example, if you fast from food, you would spend the normal prep time in prayer and if you are attempting to resist eating because you are hungry you would, again, pray through it. You certainly will not starve if you do not eat any food for one day. Let us know what you decide!

fasting is not healthy for your body it creates a state of starvation so that your body looses less energy and whatever eat after fasting gets stored more than what you lost by fasting

For your info. Wario_1, that was thousands of years ago that Jesus fasted and he had a purpose in mind, a good one. In my opinion, fasting no longer applies or is necessary in our day. When God specifically tells me to fast, then I will. Until then, I would rather not. Any further comments directed toward me in regards to religion, I will not answer. Thank you!

I have had to fast quite a few times because of medical tests and a chronic condition that I have. When the condition starts with my pancreas I'm not allowed any food or water until my amylyse and lipase counts come down. As long as you are healthy, in your situation I think you would be o.k. I would just start with a 24 hour fast but if you notice yourself getting dizzy you will need to have some juice. Just be absolutely sure you're in good health. I would even visit your dr. to make sure it is alright for you to do this and to be safe about this.~D

Hello lordwarwizard!:-) I wanted to comment on this discussion the day it was launched but somehow couldn't get on to it! What I wanted to say is that, it depends on the very individual who is intending to go without food for some time. The first and probably most important thing is to have a strong will power. Believe me that with strong will power, a human can do unbelievable, not the least of which is denying apparent physical laws of universe like related to time and space. Am I really willing to do that, is the first and foremost question one should be asking oneself. Of course, health issues are important to be considered. I know that you have now already done it. For those who haven't but want to do, they can first prepare their body for such an 'ordeal' by drinking lots of water and gradual foodlessness. If you have will power and your body is prepared, then there is absolutely no harm in it, and there surely are benefits involved, including detoxification! I,...I have been foodless for around a week more than a couple of times, yes, you read it right, a week! for nothing else but special exercises and spiritual reasons! And, I am as healthier, if not more, as any healthy person. Of course, it wasn't abrupt, as I had been foodless for more than a couple of days few times and several times for over a day before! I also know quite a few people who do it for over a day, some who have done it for as many days as myself, and yet, those who have done it for many weeks, literally, for spiritual reasons! What I want to say is that human body is very amazing and quite flexible too. It can interact with mind and physical world in strange ways. The people who do not understand the capability of body to remain foodless for 24 hours without any damage done, can not fathom many other amazing things our body and mind are capable of doing! Of course, I am not suggesting people to jump into it, not at all! If someone doesn't feel like doing it or doesn't feel him/herself capable of doing it, they shouldn't try it; it will harm them for sure. Well, I'll stop my rambling here, but It was a very interesting discussion indeed! that I couldn't resist!:-)

Indeed, Kamran, I had to distract myself and not think about food when the 24 hours approach an end. But I managed the full 24 hours I wanted.:) Spiritual reason would be a strong motivating force. But I wasn't really motivated this one this time.

It is quite normal to feel ‘hasty’ seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, lorwarwizard! I am glad you did make it with you will power, even if you didn’t have a spiritual reason, that’s admirable, Bravo!:-) Perhaps, next could be breathing exercise, enhancing your ability to inhale more and keep it quite in there for a while!:-P It will increase your stamina and control! Trust me!:-)

wow, you sure do get lots of responses for your posts huh. i just finally managed to finish reading all the posts on this one. grins everyone will have their own views and opinions. yes, muslims do fast and even some hindus fast too. personally i don't as i love food too much. grins but my mother in law who you could say is a devout hindu or something fasts more for spiritual reasons or because it's said that if you fast on this particular day, it'll be good for you or your family. of course for this, she goes to the priests and all and basically asks to read the future or something. they'll say oh this day is not good or something, etc. you can say she's an expert. i also have a neighbour who fasts too. she used to fast for maybe 2-3 days in a row but now she only does on one day. you could say it's spiritual too probably. truthfully be told, i don't really have the exact reason why they fast and am not really that interested too as i myself am not interested. but i do love hearing what they can or can't eat or can or can't do. what my neighbour said and what most people here do is that like many have said i think, they fast for half a day. they usually don't eat in the morning as in they will stay away from salt, garlic, ginger and stuff. they usually just eat fruits and maybe drink milo, coffee, etc. for the whole day. when the sun has set, or it's evening time, it depends on people individually. some start their normal eating habits. my neighbour too will eat normally, it's just that she will bar from meat for that fasting day. but sometimes, she will do as she did in the morning. it is said here that if you want to fast, you can't eat basically anything that contains salt, garlic, ginger, onions, etc for some reason. thus it's usually food containing sugar instead that they consume like bread(contains sugar that's all and maybe ghee) and drinks and fruits. but like many have also said, since it's your first time, just try it for one day. my neighbour does it weekly on mondays i think so you could try that way too. sundays or mondays i can't really remember though. my mother in law does it on saturdays as she says that my hubby's 'compatibility' you could say is not that good on that day. i was supposed to do it but i have no idea what i'm supposed to do and all the right way so she still does it. hehe she bathes early in the morning no matter how cold, prays and once the praying is done, only then does she eat or drink coffee, biscuits and all. tough.

Don't know whether or not you actually fasted (seeing as you posted this over 1 week ago) - how did it go? I would say that it won't do your body any harm not to eat for 24 hrs - how many of us have gone down with stomach bugs etc and actually CAN'T eat for that length of time (or even longer sometimes). Drinking water is a MUST no matter what you do. You can survive a week or so without food but only a couple of days without water. Also water will help to rid of any toxins you may have in your system. If you are worried about sugar levels then have something nearby that you can take if you start to feel dizzy. Personally I can't do without my food - and I show it (unfortunately)!!!
