Getting the Vote

I like to follow politics and how to get the vote. What does it take to get elected to a local office? There are many signs all over my city and none of them have attracted my eye long enough for me to think about them.
I do like the person running to go door to door in a local election. Does this help you decide or is it a poor way to get votes?
How about debates? Do they work or is it just a chance for a few people to get the spotlight? I do listen to them, but realize the person running has time to prepare a presentation for us, which explains why I like door to door. The debate can be to short to answer the questions that are most important to me, but we certainly can't have the debate be so long that people turn off their television.
What about a debate for local people running for office? Do people attend these debates? I do and many of them are packed standing room only.
I think it takes many things to get the vote, but want to know what is most effective to all of you reading my post.
