How do you feel about cabbage? - head of cabbage

One of my sons favorite meals is stuffed cabbage so when I went grocery shopping last week I bought the ingredients to make it for him Sunday and asked him and his fiance if they would like to come to dinner. Of course he said yes but his fiance doesn't like it so she's going to bring her own dinner...lol. For some reason a lot of people don't even like the smell of cabbage but it's something that never bothered me. Maybe that's because my Mom made a couple of different cabbage dishes when I was young and I'm just used to it. How do you feel about cabbage? Is it a vegetable that you completely stay away from? Is it the smell, the taste or both that you don't like?

I actually like the smell of it but I do not like the taste of it. My mom used to cook it and put it in her stew she said it gave it a really good flavor I don't think so but she liked it.

I think it's unusual that you like the smell because that's what most people don't like.

I don't really ever eat stuffed cabbage, but my whole family loves stir fried cabbage. I make it all the time. I'm kinda glad that a lot of people don't like it because I think that's why it is one of the cheapest vegetables at the market. I also love the yearly sour kraut making get together we have here in my neighborhood every year. Homemade sour kraut made from fresh cabbage is simply the best!

I love cabbage rolls but I must admit that I have not had it any other way but I certainly would not be adverse to trying a new cabbage dish.... In my mind, if it were me I would eat what was served any way but that is how I was raised....I would never bring my own food!!! ~Heavens~

If the cabbage rolls you are talking about are stuffed with ground beef, onions, rice and cooked in tomato soup...mine came out awesome today.

Thanks to my mother my son and I also love cabbage. My husband can't stand it. Of course I can not make it like my mother used to but my son can cook it up real good. My son and some of his friends get together and bbq often and sometimes they cook up some of the best cabbage on the grill wrapped in foil. Delicious. We also like a real good cole slaw. Stuffed cabbage sounds really good too, not many things beat a good stuffed cabbage as far as I am concerned.

On the grill? I've never heard of that but it does sound good. I'll have to see if I can find the recipe for it. I tasted my stuffed cabbage tonight and I have to say it's the best I've ever made.

Cabbage... Good eating! - I love cabbage!! I didn't like it when growing up but I guess my taste buds have changed and or matured. Just a little sprinkle of salt and it's yummy to the tummy!
I'm with you and your son, I love cabbage! I hated it as a child but I guess my taste buds have matured a bit because now I love it! Strange how the body changes over the years, isn't it?

They say our taste buds change every 7 years and I've found that to be true. There are things I didn't like some years ago that I'll eat now.

I will eat raw cabbage, but I will not touch cooked cabbage. Just thinking about the smell of cooked cabbage makes me sick.

I've never heard of anyone eating it raw but since it's a vegetable I guess it wouldn't taste too bad.

People eat raw cabbage all the time. That is what cole slaw is, raw red and white cabbage.

Cabbage burgers or Runzas - cabbage burgers or Runzas are part of ethnic cuisine once served by the Volga German immigrants
Maybe a person has to grow up eating cabbage to like the taste and the smell. We would make kraut or cabbage burgers when i was growing up. I used to make it regularly as my kids were growing up. My son loves cabbage and the kraut burgers too. You cook up the cabbage with some onions and hamburger, drain it really well and put it inside of bread dough. My aunt who taught me how to make them would let them raise before baking them. I just put mine straight into the oven because I didn't like that much bread around them. A friend would bake hers then open them up and add a slice of cheese to them when they were eating them. They are so good. My aunt learned to make them from her Russian-in-laws. Some of the bakeries back home in Nebraska would make them to sell. In fact a whole industry has grown up around the cabbage burger called the Runza Franchise found in Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado and Iowa

I absolutely love cabbage! Like you, I grew up in a house where cabbage was served routinely. We had steamed cabbage often with our meals. A meal that my grandmother served often (souther Appalachia!) was pinto beans, steamed cabbage and cornbread! Homemade vegetable soup tastes much better when one adds some shredded cabbage to the soup! Cabbage is actually very good for us,it is a cruciferous vegetable just like brocolli. Many people hate to eat cabbage because like all of the cruciferous vegetables, it gives them gas. I actually wish I had more cabbage recipes! I would love to know how and with what you stuff your cabbage!!

I'll eat it, I dont love it but I crave it every once in a while. I like it with corned beef or ham, cooking in the crock pot all day with carrots and potatos. I dont think I could eat stuffed cabbage, I'm not sure whats in it. Is that like stuffed peppers?

my family loves cabbage, even the kids. we like it fried, sauteed, boiled, stewed, stuffed, slawed, and even raw. raw it is an excellent dieter's snack - just sprinkle with some sort of seasoned salt..crunch crunch.

I'm with you here, Modestah, I just love the centre rib, as it is so crunchy, and seems to be sweeter. And there is no way that I dislike cabbage, it is a staple in my home.

I love cabbage and so does my husband. We eat it quite often and we love the smell of it too. We have it as a veggie and when we have it we don't eat any potatoes with the meal. We like it just fried with onions as well as in soup and as cabbage rolls. I have never had it stuffed as you say, but I would be very interested in knowing how you make it that way. What do you stuff it with and how? I would like to learn another way of making it since we love it and eat it quite often. So a new recipe for it would be nice and my understanding is you can give a recipe in a response, just not in a discussion. So please share it with us.

I think it is the very strong taste that cabbage has that turns some people off, especially children. It does have a strong smell too, when cooking. I love cabbage myself & eat it quite regularly. I usually have it cooked, microwaved, but sometimes I have it in a coleslaw. I have eaten stuffed cabbage which I love, but have never cooked it myself.

We make a delicious baked cabbage dish and it is so simple. Chop up the cabbage, place it in a baking dish. Chop up a bunch of garlic, whatever amount you want. Sprinkle it over the cabbage. Then we use lowfat butter, a stick, sliced into about 12 pieces. Put the pats on top of the cabbage and garlic. Tightly cover with tin foil and bake for about 2 hours (or until the cabbage is soft)at 350F Remove from oven, stir well and enjoy! I love it when it is prepared this way, hate it when it is boiled! PEACE

Dear ctrymuziklvr, a hint that I learned from an old German lady, is that when you purchase cabbage, pop a couple of heads in the freezer, the day before you are going to make cabbage rolls, pull it out of the freezer & let thaw! The leaves are as soft & pliable as the steamed leaves, much more durable...and it's way easier to handle than the hot, steamed leaves. I keep a coupla heads in the freezer at all time...and it's one of the things, cabbage rolls that is that I keep on hand, cause they freeze so well.Cheers.

I find the smell isn't bad if I'm making it because it slowly permiates the air, but if I go outdoors to get the mail and come back it, Wow! It can hit you. I love corned beef and cabbage as well as stuffed cabbage. I also love cole slaw. Take care and thanks, interesting topic.

My favourite vegetable used to be cabbage when i was young baecause my mother made cabbage very well. It is a very difficult question for me if someone asked me if i wil eat cabbage because sometimes it tastes good but sometimesit is horrible. It depends on how you make it.
